25.01.2022 This morning, I woke up to the wonderful news that I am finalist in the Lawyers Weekly Women in Law Awards - Sole Practitioner of the Year 2020! I am proud to work everyday towards building and strengthening the Queensland Government’s implementation of its Right to Information and Information Privacy system. The driving force behind what I do is a strong belief in government transparency. Thank you to Lawyers Weekly for recognising my work in this area! Congratulations to al...l the other finalists, I look forward to virtually sharing a glass of champagne with you on awards night on 10 December! You can view all the the categories and finalists for the awards here - https://lnkd.in/g9KG_bj #rti #righttoinformation #publicinterest #government #privacy #womeninbusiness #womeninlaw

24.01.2022 Run a team in the Queensland Government? Your staff must know about their obligations under our Right to Information and Privacy laws. RTI Consultants have created two 15 minute training videos designed to train public servants on how to respond to an information access request and handle personal information. Contact me at [email protected] for more information.

21.01.2022 It's a big day for RTI Consultants tomorrow! We are filming our first training video! The car is packed and ready to go for an early start....

20.01.2022 I love what the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) has done in this article. In a section titled "How you know this", reporter Dan Ziffer outlines that the information in this article came from a Freedom of Information application. He explains in brief, simple terms the process he went through to get the documents. Often, the public do not know how much of their news comes from FOI or RTI requests or the importance of our information access... system in keeping government accountable. This blurb down the bottom of a story is a fantastic way to alert the public to the information access process and how important it is. Through public knowledge we can lobby our government for better, more understandable information access laws across Australia. Well done Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC)! #government #publicinterest #informationispower #abcnews #righttoinformation #rti #foia #freedomofinformation

19.01.2022 A couple of weeks ago I had the absolute pleasure of talking about right to information, privacy and happiness with Clarissa Rayward - The Happy Family Lawyer! If you're interested in my legal journey and how I ended up launching my own firm in a very niche area of law, have a listen!

17.01.2022 I am delighted to announce that I am a finalist in the Lawyers Weekly Australian Law Awards - Sole Practitioner of the Year 2020. This year the awards will be held online on 7 August 2020 and we will all get together in our black tie attire - just from the comfort of home! 15.01.2022 Loving my new office space in Washington DC! When I started my business, I was seeking freedom and flexibility. Running a business is damn hard work and I definitely didn't feel free in the beginning. But today, I feel free. I am so lucky to be able to run my business in Australia from the United States! #bosslady #slayqueen #womeninbusiness

12.01.2022 Attention all Queensland Government agencies! If the Office of the Information Commissioner audited your agency’s privacy awareness strategies, how do you think you would do? The Office of the Information Commissioner recently tabled a report in Parliament about how 3 Queensland Government agencies manage privacy awareness. The report makes it clear that all agencies should, at a minimum, have: Clear privacy policies; and... Training on privacy comprising of a combination of online, face to face and video modules. Don’t have this? Don’t panic! This is what I specialise in. RTI Consultants have helped several Queensland Government agencies develop and refine their privacy practices over the past few years. Give me a call today to find out how I can help your agency! #privacy #security #datasecurity #informationsecurity #queenslandgovernment http://ow.ly/esm150Ej6BC

12.01.2022 #lawyering in a #globalpandemic is certainly interesting. It's been a while since I've pulled out this suitcase! But on Thursday I fly to Washington DC to finish off 2020 in the States. Just another twist in this crazy year, but I'm learning to take it all in my stride! My partner is an infectious diseases specialist and has been working in the States since the start of the year on COVID-19 and Malaria. I've decided to go and spend the rest of the year with him and run my fi...rm from America. I also hope to continue my study of the American Freedom of Information Act. I'll be documenting my trip and all the challenges that come with running a firm from overseas on my social media. If you're interested in knowing what its like to #travel in a global pandemic, I will be showing you at the end of the week! 12.01.2022 A behind the scenes shot from today! So excited to see how this works out!

12.01.2022 Today The Courier Mail has run multiple stories on Queensland's Right to Information (RTI) system. It's great to see some media attention in this area, I know how hard the Queensland Government has been working to improve RTI and I am proud to be a part of that. Thank you to The Courier Mail and Kelmeny Fraser for giving me the opportunity to comment on these issues. It's so important that we all understand our RTI system.... You can read my comments on pages 8 and 9 of The Courier Mail today or online at the following links: https://lnkd.in/gf_F7NU https://lnkd.in/ghgc_P6

07.01.2022 How is it half way through May? 2021 is flying by! I've been quiet on here recently because I've been working on the business and deciding my next steps. I've got some BIG ideas on how to increase government accountability and transparency across Australia. Watch this space in the coming months!

06.01.2022 Senator Patrick is taking the Australian Government to the AAT over its decision to refuse access to the minutes of National Cabinet's first meeting and information relating to its rules and procedures. National Cabinet was established as part of the Government's response to COVID-19. It replaced the Council of Australian Governments (COAG). However, in setting up National Cabinet, the Morrison Government made information created by the body subject to the Cabinet exemption.... COAG was not previously subject to this exemption meaning its information could be accessed under FOI laws. I'm undecided on this one. I understand that National Cabinet need to be able to freely and openly discuss border closures, hotel quarantine and other decisions fundamental to Australia's COVID-19 response. Premature release of information discussed could cause public panic. However, these decisions are having huge impacts on Australians. Understanding the decision-making processes behind decisions of this committee is fundamental to ensuring government accountability and transparency and making sure decisions are being made on correct advice. What are your thoughts? #government #law #publicinterest #freedomofinformation #foia #righttoinformation #rti http://ow.ly/omSF50DWicE

06.01.2022 I believe that Ipswich City Council needs to be accountable and transparent in relation to its dealings in the past. The launch of its Transparency and Integrity hub is a good step forward but more needs to be done. Read my comments in the Brisbane Times: https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au//ipswich-city-council-pro

02.01.2022 I am excited to announce that I am a finalist in the Queensland Law Society Emerging Leader Award for 2020! Thank you to Meghan Hibbert for the nomination. By being a finalist in this award, I hope to continue to bring awareness and recognition to the area of Right to Information and Information Privacy law and its fundamental value to our legal system and democratic government. Good luck to my fellow finalists, looking forward to seeing you at the QLS Legal Profession and Dinner Awards on 13 March 2020. #emergingleader #education #leadership https://www.qls.com.au/About_QLS/QLS_Awards

02.01.2022 Not sure what I do? Don't worry you aren't alone! Even some of my closest friends and family don't know what I do! I work in a very niche area law. RTI (or FOI as it's called federally and in other states) refers to the right of the public to access government held information. I work with goverment, businesses and individuals to assert their rights under our RTI system. This can be advocating for or against the release of information depending on the circumstances.

02.01.2022 It's no secret that I think the RTI Act and IP Act need a review. As I say in this article - "In its current form, the Act doesn't serve either the government or the public well. The complexity of the Act means that its difficult for the government to apply correctly. It also means it's difficult for the public to understand the decisions being made." A review is not only necessary for the public but also the government. Just look at the recent media coverage surrounding the... Premier's private emails. The complexity of the Act made that issue so difficult to understand. Thanks to The Queensland Times for giving me the opportunity to comment on this issue. Hopefully the government will conduct a in-depth review this year. http://ow.ly/Iv3Y50ErzL1

01.01.2022 Here we go! Washington DC here I come! But first a stopover in Sydney.......
