23.01.2022 It may have been a bit chilly, but today we had the pleasure of flying our quad-rotor for the Victorian Space Science Education Centre with eager STEM high-school students who have spent the term designing 'CanSats'. The CanSats were dropped from the quad and parachuted safety to the ground. Victorian Space Science Education Centre

21.01.2022 Last week we hosted a drone boot camp to teach the basics of multirotors to interested students. It was great to see so many enthusiastic people turn up! Groups designed, built and test flew their own aircraft. If you missed out don't worry, we'll be hosting another boot camp in the future. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for future events!

19.01.2022 Looking for an FYP in Semester 2? Here is an awesome opportunity from one of our team members: Project Title: Parafoil payload delivery system for UAS The high cost of payloads and the increasing use of Unmanned Aircraft (UA) over populous areas have motivated UAS operators to make use of parachutes recovery mechanisms to reduce the risk posed to; i) people, ii) property overflown, and iii) risks associated with the loss of the UA and its payload. The primary focus of curren...t parachute recovery systems has been on mitigating the impact velocity. However, with the use of traditional non-controllable parachutes arrives an issue of containment, which is not addressed in the current body of literature. Parafoil based parachutes offer manoeuvrability and potentially precision landing. Parafoil vehicles have already proven to be useful in many military applications. Their stable configuration suits autonomous guidance systems, and a low descent rate makes them an attractive choice to safely deliver a payload to a specific location. The focus of this project will be to; i) characterise a parafoil system through wind tunnel testing, and ii) develop an autonomous system capable of precisely delivering small payloads to a desired location. This is a high-interest topic that has the potential to be published. Keywords: UAS, drone, parachute, aerodynamics Sponsors: confidential (will be disclosed later) Requirements / desirables: Basic knowledge of electronics and avionics, strong interest in aerodynamics, data analysis, able to design and build test rigs Number of Students: 1-2 If you are interested please contact Ashim Panta: [email protected] for more information
