22.01.2022 Year 11 Biology Depth Study Excursion: Bateau Bay Rock Platform Ecological Study: 3 June 2021. We chose the one drizzly day in many weeks (accidentally) to get ...out on the rock platform at Bateau Bay to undertake Ecological Surveys of plant and animal life. The students were troopers and conducted all the surveys with gusto and there no complaints, even when the rain picked up. We were able to identify different habitats and the multitude of amazing animals and algae that live in the area. From Periwinkles to Octopus, Neptunes Necklace to Coraline Algae, all was observed and recorded. Great day out and well done for the effort from the Year 11 Biology students! Mr McIvor and Mr White. 18.01.2022 Each week we will be sharing memories of Rumbalara EEC to celebrate our thirty years. Please feel free to share your memories with us. As a first memory its int...eresting to note that Rumbalara was built in 1988 as a rainforest interpretive centre to encourage the public to learn more about rainforests. Unfortunately there were not enough visitors to keep the Centre open and it was decided it would be better if it were to become a Field Studies Centre with the Department of education. The following memory is from the first principal of Rumbalara -Neil Dufty. Neil explains how the Centre became established and the role of Allen Strom in this process. EARLY GUIDANCE FROM ALLEN STROM: I had known Allen Strom for about 25 years prior to being appointed Principal of Rumbalara Environmental Education Centre when it started in 1991. I greatly admired Allen (or ‘Strommie’ as we called him) for his work in establishing Environmental Education Centres (originally called Field Studies Centres) in the early 1970s. Allen was also a leader in the NSW conservation movement (e.g. the Chief Guardian of Fauna prior to the establishment of the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service) and a longtime Central Coast resident and environmental advocate. He was also instrumental in brokering the use of Gosford City Council’s Rainforest Interpretive Centre as the base for Rumbalara Environmental Education Centre. Although I had previous experience in Environmental Education Centres (Wambangalang and Long Neck Lagoon), I jumped at the invitation of the Stroms (wife Beryl was a leader herself in local history) to stay with them during my first days at Rumbalara, prior to my family moving to the Central Coast. I suspect it was their opportunity to ‘educate’ the new Principal. And so they did. Over several nights I received a wonderful local insight into environmental issues, local history and their networks including Council and state government agencies. This was a tremendous initiation for me, as I had to quickly start planning and running excursions using local environments. The Stroms’ guidance enabled me to identify possible excursion sites and local experts who could help with more information. I started to tap into their networks in order to build relationships. The Stroms were also active members of the Rumbalara EEC Advisory Committee. There is no doubt that the Stroms were a guiding light in the development of Rumbalara Environmental Education Centre. 05.01.2022 Hope everybody had a great World Environment Day on Saturday. If you missed it last week there is still time to celebrate this week. Last week Rumbalara EEC worked with some enthusiastic leaders form Central Coast schools who shared the environmental projects they were working on at their school. The future is in better hands with these sort of students on the job. Projects ranged from waste reduction ideas, bush tucker gardens, the creation of habitats in the school grounds and energy reduction plans. Well done student leaders. Thanks for the Marine Discovery Centre for a great venue.
04.01.2022 This week Tom a teacher from Erina High shared a great memory of visiting Strickland Forest with Rumbalara Environmental Education Centre. He remembers crossing... the same tree below when he was a student. The photo below shows Tom to the left with his students from Erina high on the log. Here are his thoughts In 2011 I attended this excursion as a student with my year 11 Earth and Environmental class. I remember running across this fallen tree and learning of the impacts introduced species can have on the environment. It was excursions like this that grew my passion for the environment and led me to study environmental science at University. 10 years on from that excursion and I'm back here again, except this time as a teacher with my Earth and Environmental Science class. The excursion is just as valuable as it was back then. Thanks Rumbalara for the quality environmental education you continue to provide our community. Tom White See more
02.01.2022 Its NAIDOC week 4-11th July but many schools are celebrating this week due to the holidays. This years theme is ’Heal Country’. This you tube link has a selection of photos of our Central Coast Country. We are so lucky - all these photos have been taken at our field work locations. Feel free to share this with students and ask the questions - What is Country? What is special about our local Country? How can can we care for and protect Country? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FMHKY8hwRc
