21.01.2022 10 and scoliosis Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine when viewed from the front or back. The curve (Cobb angle) is calculated by adding the angle the top most tilted vertebrae (in the curve) makes with the horizontal and the lowest most tilted vertebrae angle with the horizontal. If this total is less than 10 it is not considered a scoliosis only a spinal curve. Curves less that 10 are not usually treated for scoliosis but will be monitored in high risk patients for progression. If the curve continues to grow above 10 then action may be taken.

19.01.2022 Managing your child's anxiety about their scoliosis. - Trish Halls, Scolicare As any parent can attest, every child is different and what may be no more than a ...blip on the radar to one child may feel like the end of the world to another. And this can change on a daily basis! If your child has recently been diagnosed, they may not express any anxiety they are feeling directly, but it may become apparent in moodiness, social withdrawal, tears, a decline in academic results at school. Or there may be no reaction at all. It’s important for you, as a parent, to be aware that your child may feel unsettled at the thought that "there is something wrong" and at the thought of ongoing treatment. Try to be as well informed as you can so that you can answer their questions as they arise. Or if you don’t know, commit to finding an answer rather than brushing the question aside. It’s a good idea to have a chat to your child's teacher (or Year Advisor for High School children). Let them know what’s happening and ask them to watch out for any signs at school that may be linked to underlying anxiety. Children entering their teens are likely to just want to be one of the crowd and may feel embarrassed or self-conscious about wearing a brace. Try to take these concerns seriously and discuss them empathetically. Let them know you don’t have all the answers, but you are there for them as a sounding board. It may be helpful to enlist the help of a family member or trusted friend who the child may feel more comfortable speaking to. Often, emotions get in the way of common-sense advice, and it’s good to have an impartial person to offer insights. In some cases, your child may be teased or bullied for wearing a brace. It’s probably best to nip this in the bud immediately and speak to the principal of your child’s school. All schools have very strong anti-bullying policies in place, but they need to know it’s happening to be able to address it. For parents of children who are now undergoing self-isolation or lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, this will be a tough time for you too! There will be lots to juggle and living in close quarters will only add to stress levels for the whole family. As with everything, keeping routine can be helpful. If your child has been given scoliosis exercises, make them part of the daily schedule, make them fun, or even do your own exercise program alongside your child. Let them know you’re in this together. As with anything throughout the teenage years - this won’t last forever, and you and your child will come out the other side stronger and wiser as a result of your experiences. Good luck, and don’t forget to arrange a TeleHealth consultation with the ScoliCare Clinics team if you can’t come into the clinic. We are here to continue caring for patients with consultations, support, and advice.

18.01.2022 Rebecca will be discussing rehab and the different exercise options for patients with Scoliosis.

12.01.2022 In challenging times we can forget that looking after our own, and family members’ health, includes checking spinal health too. Just like we check our cholesterol and blood pressure, it’s important to pay attention to any changes in our spines, including pain and any postural changes. Regular checks of all family members can help with early detection of any spinal issues, which includes scoliosis. #ScoliMonth2020

12.01.2022 We are LIVE: Interview with teenage scoliosis patient, Nora-Lee, and Dr Juan. Feel free to ask questions/advice!

06.01.2022 For someone living with scoliosis, they might sometimes feel like they are dealing with a condition no-one else can relate to, or understand. It’s commonly beli...eved that scoliosis only affects 2-4% of the population, but this isn’t exactly true. It’s reported that scoliosis is found in 2-4% of the adolescent population, but when ScoliCare reviewed the published literature about adults with scoliosis, we found that scoliosis is prevalent in approximately 38% of adults (over 40) too! So the number of people with scoliosis is a lot larger than many would believe. It’s quite possible that your friend, your neighbour, or even your favourite celebrity or sports person might also live with scoliosis and deals with issues just like you. From models to athletes, you might be surprised by some famous people with scoliosis. We will be posting over the next few weeks a selection of people who have a known scoliosis. First up is Usain Bolt! It’s hard to believe that the fastest man on earth has scoliosis! Olympian Usain Bolt was born with scoliosis, curving his spine to the right and making his right leg half an inch shorter than his left. It’s been said that Bolt has adjusted his stride to accommodate the effects of his scoliosis. In the Dec. 12, 2011 issue of ESPN The Magazine, Bolt describes how scoliosis affects his training: When I was younger it wasn’t really a problem. But you grow and it gets worse. My spines really curved bad. But if I keep my core and back strong, the scoliosis does not really bother me. So, I don’t have to worry about it as long as I work hard. The early part of my career, when we did not really know much about it, it really hampered me because I got injured every year.

06.01.2022 Regular checking for the signs of scoliosis can lead to early detection and better treatment outcomes. Check out our guide for some of the early warning signs. If you have any questions, just message us. #ScoliMonth2020
