24.01.2022 These past few weeks have been scary and difficult for many of us. We recognise that the world can feel a bit topsy-turvy right now and we wanted to take a mome...nt to breathe. Box-breathing is a technique used to take slow, deep breaths. It can be done several times throughout the day and helps calm nerves and relieve stress. First, empty your lungs of air. Slowly inhale for 4 counts Hold the breath for a count of 3 Slowly exhale for 4 counts Hold the breath for a count of 3 Repeat the cycle up to 4 times Luke Tribe for ABC Life

17.01.2022 Do you have an anxious child?? Whether it's being terrified of the dark or of going to school, feeling anxious can be really scary especially for our kids. It's... also one of the biggest issues that keeps parents up at night! I was so chuffed to talk to one of my favourite experts on this topic, psychologist Hey Sigmund - Karen Young for the second episode of Parental As Anything season 2, which went live today. Listen via the ABC Listen app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you usually get your podcasts.

10.01.2022 This is a really entertaining introduction to resilience, adversity, stress (both positive & toxic), and the resilience scale. It is a little longer than some ...videos on this page (7.44 mins) but done so well that you won't mind. This would be a good one to share with teens, parents, and staff. https://youtu.be/HJvDrT6N-mw
09.01.2022 Breathing has to be the handiest tool we can gift our child for their managing emotions toolkit, after all your breath goes everywhere with you! Teaching chi...ldren to breathe provides them with a simple but effective strategy for slowing down, both mentally and physically, helping them to take notice of how they’re feeling and to relax or calm down in the face of overwhelming emotions. https://childhood101.com/download/28744/

08.01.2022 I was recently told by a very smart person that when teenagers are being REALLY difficult, you have to parent them like they're toddlers again. Stay calm, lead ...with love, don't yell back at them in your evil Disney villain voice (even though they probably deserve it). Remember that their outbursts are usually borne of frustration, hurt, or the fact that they're currently wired to test any and all boundaries. They're struggling with this dichotomy of needing to be independent, needing to do stuff for themselves, while also needing to lean on you when things feel overwhelming. And of course, they will unload the most on the person with whom they feel safest. And as I processed all this, I was like... Yes. This is all very true. And I found it helpful and reassuring. And then my brain began noodling all the ways toddlers and teenagers are the same. So I made a list. And it's dumb, but here it is. LIST OF WAYS TEENAGERS & TODDLERS ARE THE SAME: Cannot be trusted alone near a container of frosting. Literally no understanding of the value of monetary currency and will lose/spend money immediately once touched. Passionately hates being told it's time for bed. Should never be allowed to cut own hair (or that of others). Will watch the same YouTube video/TikTok seventy-four times. Hordes cups and water bottles, randomly steals all the spoons. Does not want to wear a coat. Would absolutely get into a windowless van with a one-eyed stranger if told there was a baby sloth inside. Says incredibly weird shit. Laughs hysterically. Leaves the room. Does not appreciate your screen time limits, lady. Impulsive brain occasionally takes over, smothering rational thought, leading to injuries and general dumbasserie. Example: Jumping off the roof of the shed is a good idea. Let's do that. Wants to control the music in the car, does not approve of your song choices. Search their room and will likely find contraband candy, missing scotch tape, the last pair of scissors. Needs to be reminded twice daily to brush their teeth. Somehow senses imminent parental alone time, ruthlessly cockblocks. Cutest when they’re sleeping. Will hit pause on driving you crazy just long enough to give you a smile or a hug that reminds you how much you love them and how they’re not your baby anymore, and then your heart swells and you get choked up and your face looks weird, and then they laugh at you. via Julianna W.
