25.01.2022 If you have been into the hotspot areas, you have to be extra careful as you return to your community, to avoid being a super-spreader into a rural town. Be extra cautious when you return home. Do your best not to mingle until 14 days have passed, and if you have any symptoms at all, go and get a COVID test. 25.01.2022 We welcome the cohort of interns and resident medical officers taking up their new positions! Training years are a wonderful opportunity to try new things: not just fields of medicine but locations too. No matter what area of medicine you end up in, or where you end up practising, spending some time in rural medicine will make you a better doctor.... 22.01.2022 Last week’s surprise outbreak of a COVID cluster in Adelaide combined with the re-opening of more state borders makes it critical that Australians do not let their guard down on coronavirus. Together with the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM), we are warning today that, as restrictions are eased, there is potential for coronavirus to spread quickly again if Australians simply think the crisis is over and don’t take the necessary precautions. 21.01.2022 With Sydney working hard to contain a COVID hotspot, the last thing we need is people bringing COVID home back to their rural communities that have so far been protected. Consider your personal responsibility you really don’t want to be the one person who brings it home and causes an outbreak in your home town among your friends and family! 14.01.2022 With a Spring that has been full of pollen, and warmer days but cooler nights, you could be forgiven for thinking you have hayfever or even just the common cold rather than COVID-19. But as more Australians get out of the house (and lockdown), and socialise and travel again, getting tested for COVID is crucial in preventing another wave of the pandemic, the Rural Doctors Association of Australia and Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) have warned today. ...When it comes to COVID, the right thing to do by your family and community is to keep ensuring you are being COVID safe - and to get tested if you have any symptoms. 13.01.2022 Speaking to the National Rural Press Club today, the new National Rural Health Commissioner, Adj Prof Ruth Stewart, has supported the critical role of rural maternity services and their healthcare teams in providing safe and quality care for rural women and babies - and decreasing the likelihood of premature birth and its complications. Commissioner Stewart rejected as an ‘urban myth’ the argument that rural maternity services are less safe than larger units drawing on nume...rous international and Australian studies that demonstrate they are at least as safe, and potentially safer. 11.01.2022 UPDATE: It has just been announced that South Australia will go into a six day period of restrictions from midnight tonight. More details here: https://www.covid-19.sa.gov.au/response ________________________ Country South Australians should ensure they are doing everything they can to be COVID safe and avoid unnecessary travel to Adelaide following the jump in cases in the city, we have warned today with the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM).... There is no need to panic about the increase in COVID cases in Adelaide, but if you live in rural SA now is a good time to ensure you haven’t become more relaxed in your approach to COVID safety over the past few months RDAA President, Dr John Hall, said. 11.01.2022 With the warmer weather now well and truly here, snakes are out and about! Those living in rural Australia should ensure they know what to do to stay safe around snakesand also have a snakebite first aid kit prepared and ready in case it is needed. Tragically, already this snake season, we have seen a death from snakebite our President, Dr John Hall, said in a media statement issued today.... It is critical that rural Australians know how to minimise the chance of getting bitten by a snake, and what to do if they are bitten. And for those who live on farms, work in more remote areas - or even just live in rural towns where ambulance response times can be longer due to distance - it is incredibly important to have the first aid equipment needed to initiate treatment, as it could help save your life. 05.01.2022 Not every doctor is trained in emergency care. This is a skill that is maintained by Rural Generalist doctors that allows them to provide high-quality care in the hospital. Recruitment and retention of Rural Generalists is essential to the maintenance of rural hospitals and the services provided by them, and local innovative solutions need to be facilitated to address these challenges. 02.01.2022 If all the rural incentives and programs available were actually delivering support to rural medical training and practices, then rural would be a premiere medical training pathway and a career of choice. There is well over $1 billion invested in rural medical training and workforce initiatives each year, but the majority of this isn’t making it out any further than large regional centres. We need to ensure that Government support for rural, goes rural. It shouldn’t be fritte...red away by city-based organisations with funds being chewed through in administration and duplication. Rural intended funds should be invested in truly rural and remote areas that means reclassifying rural to be recognised as MMM 3 to 7 communities not MMM 2 to 7 as currently applies across many government programs.
