15.01.2022 ARTHRITIS IN YOUR PET Signs of arthritis There are many signs that may indicate your dog or cat is suffering from arthritis, even though most dogs and cats are very stoic creatures and tend to mask signs of pain. Signs may include one or more of the following: - Reluctance to walk, climb stairs, jump or play... - Limping/lameness - Lagging behind on walks - Pain or stiffness when getting up or down - Yelping when touched - A change in personality (aggression when normally good-natured) - Licking of the affected joints These signs become more obvious as arthritis progresses, and the pain worsens. As a result of the changes that have occurred in the affected joint/s, arthritis in dogs and cats is not a condition that can be cured. However, the pain and discomfort can be effectively controlled and managed. To help your dog be happy and enjoy life again, there are 4 important areas that we will focus on: 1. Weight Management 2. Excercise Management 3. Home Comforts and Environment Changes 4. Veterinary Treatments

06.01.2022 Grass seeds are often an overlooked problem with our pets. As grass seeds are usually shaped like an arrow and are comprised of spikes they can easily migrate under the skin and burrow their way in between your pets toes, in their ears, nostrils and eyes - meaning your pet may require a sedation or general anaesthetic to remove the grass seed/s depending on the location, deepness and patient compliance. It is important to get your pet seen as gr...ass seeds carry bacteria which will often cause an infection when they are left in place. If left untreated the infection could spread or the seed could travel and cause internal damage. There is a variety of symptoms you will see in your pet depending on the location of the grass seed/s: Ear: Scratching or rubbing the affected ear, tilting their head to one side and/or shaking their head. Eye: Redness, inflammation, discharge, tears and/or squinting. Nose: Sneezing, pawing at the nose and/or nasal discharge. Skin/Coat: Hair matting, chewing, discharge and/or swelling. Toes/feet: Lameness, swelling, lump on the foot, weeping ,sore. Prevention can be a difficult task to achieve, especially if you live near farm or bush land: Keeping your pets coat short, especially around their genitals, armpits, toes and ears. Minimise the time spent in long, grassy areas. If your pet does run through areas like this, run your hands over their body and physically check for any grass seeds. If you suspect your pet has a grass seed contact Rutherglen Veterinary Clinic on (02) 6032 8022.

02.01.2022 Bee Stings Spring time is here which means bees are out an about! Insect stings can be nasty and some pets will have a reaction. If your pet has been stung on their face, it can cause a respiratory tract blockage from the swelling - making it difficult for the patient to breath. Insect bites occur most commonly around the limbs and face as often your pet will try to eat the bee. ... Symptoms your pet can experience include: - Pain at the site. - Swelling around the muzzle, face and eyes. - Lethargy or reluctance to walk. - Collapse. - Pawing at the mouth or chewing at the affected limb. - Development of anaphylactic shock: increased heart rate, collapse, struggling to breath, vomiting and seizures. First aid you can administer at home: - Remove the stinger from your pet. Use cardboard or a credit card and drag across the site instead of tweezers which can break the stinger. - A cool face washer to ease the pain at the site of the sting. - Seek veterinary assistance if respiratory issues arise.
