25.01.2022 Seriously, who would go to this extent for a small laser/ computer room in ones garage ? The ceilings painted. The floors down. The exterior is finished and primed. The interior trim has been primed and now the walls have had one coat of top coat. A coat of paint and a bit of filler covers a multitude of flaws . I must admit, theres nothing like a coat of fresh paint on a wall and trim. 23.01.2022 I have my No.1 helper here again today! LMA who has a week of University this week has been helping paint the laser/computer room. Having given the room of undercoat yesterday, she is now painting a coat of ceiling white on the roof. So , its been explained how it can be a bit challenging, as many of you already know . 22.01.2022 Theres nothing like a freshly re-tipped cutter ! Thanks @timbertools_engineering. This cutter was made by these guys many years ago when Mike was still with us. After many, many sharpens and after the tungsten was quite thin I had the old girl re-tipped. Off course it came back looking like a brand new cutter head. All nicely balanced. 20.01.2022 Setting up the old Grey Lathe! She hasnt seen action for over a year now. The extension needs to be attached, leveled and dyna bolted to the floor. Its not a particularly attractive lathe. But that doesnt matter. It was made by the previous owners who were an old pattern making company in Melbourne. The bed is just fabricated steel. The headstock , tool rest holders and tailstock are cast iron. I made the extension after purchasing the lathe off the original owners when... they retired back in 1988. It has served me well for over thirty years. It has had tens of thousands of items hand turned on it. Items from 20mm in diameter x 100mm long up to 200mm x 4500mm long. I have only replaced the bearings three times. Shes been a good old workhorse. I have no real plans for it, apart from having a bit of fun with it. It should be running in the next week or so. I cant wait. 16.01.2022 Filling up the new shed! I am pleased I ordered the pallet fork attachment for my Kioti tractor. It has proved most useful moving my pallets of wood around. I will never get to use it all and should get rid of some of it. But look at the ends of some of the pieces, Huon Pine, Jarrah , Brazilian Mahogany. 16.01.2022 A little bit of maintenance on my little Hammer C3 31 @feldergroup machine this evening! Due to some rough handling, on my behalf, I broke the casting. Anyhow, its now repaired and safe again. I really like this machine. I simply use it now for planing and thicknessing. Unfortunately my 24 Delta thicknesser and my wonderful single to three phase converter dont like each other. Despite fitting some soft start switchgear, they still dont like each other and so it is n...ot being used. Everything else in my shed, with much greater draw , work perfectly. So my beautiful 16 Delta jointer tends to gather dust as well at the moment due to the ease and simplicity of the little Hammer combo. 15.01.2022 You might think I have nothing better to do with my time ! The recycled and modified pediment from my old factory is nearly in place. It was a struggle getting it up there. I had to move machinery to create a path for my @kiotiaustralia tractor. Thank goodness I had it. The shortened pediment was a dead weight. 13.01.2022 Road Trip! To be specific- Road Trip to Melbourne which is currently in lock down. These are two of my last orders for verandah posts. They are for some wonderful customers. Its a quick 4 hour round trip complete with Bridgets hand made mask . Its amazing to think on the return leg I need to go through a police checkpoint to show I live outside the lockdown region and I had good reason to be visiting the lockdown region. These are my last post orders. I have been doing a fair bit of work over the last few months to bring in a few dollars to supplement our reduced income. But no more after the end of this month. 12.01.2022 The Laser/Computer Room is starting to take shape! I thought I would hang a bit of memorabilia before filling it with the laser . The CNC routing of the signs, cars and steering wheel are all the handiwork of our talented son Patrick from when he worked for us . The photos are from our Trade Nights which we had around this time of the year . We had around 50 people including family and staff at our first one . Four years later , which was our last before my first attempt ...at retirement, we had 180 guests. They were great nights where we had Supercar drivers from Brad Jones Racing attend. The three Jasons, being Jason Richards, Jason Bright and Jason Bagwana along with Cam McConville on two occasions. On our first night we had John Sheppard of HDT fame attend with one of historic racing cars. They were fun nights where we did demonstrations, had the drivers talk , had Q& As and most importantly a BBQ. Our sons many Trade School awards are framed and hanging up there as well. I really should have built a bigger room. There is not enough wall space to hang everything. The doors will be finished and hung next week and the Laser, ducting ,etc. can be set up. 10.01.2022 Theres no point in sinking a ship for a half-penny worth of tar! It was my late dads saying. It is his version of an old saying. A lot of effort went into these feet. First off the furniture maker selected the wood, then carefully glued it up and processed the blanks. I then turned and sanded these beautiful blanks of wood,hopefully ready for polishing. They now need to be mailed back to the owners. The last thing you want are rub marks or worse, dings. So a little bit of packaging wont go astray. 06.01.2022 A desk for one of our daughters! Liz works for an energy company liaising with trades and organising connections etc. As a result of the Covid crisis she now works remotely from her home and asked if I could make a small desk for her. It gets delivered tomorrow . By the way, a little story about Liz. Two and half years ago a builder rang to organise power to be permanently connected to a new house. She went through the usual spiel and advised him that all scaffolding mus...t be down and the house completed and ready for connection. The builder was advised that if the scaffolding was still there the tradesmen sent to do the connection would walk away. Sure, no problem said the builder and subsequently took down some scaffolding and sent off photos to prove it. However , in reality he had only removed half of it and rang back Liz to book in the connection. Once again Liz advised him that it all must be down. Yes, its all down he advised Liz. Little did the builder know was that Liz knew it wasnt and he was lying to her. How did she know? 05.01.2022 A contrast in materials and delicacy in woodworking techniques ! These pine box newel posts required a bit more finesse than the Cyprus Pine planter boxes. The CNC router made life a lot easier with machining the recessed panels on the posts. They were hogged our first with a 1/2 fluted cutter and the corners were sharpened up with a 1/8 up cut spiral cutter. The panels required only a very light sand after routing. The slow part of the process was that I had to manually ...change the collets and cutters on the CNC with each face . Unfortunately I dont have an automatic tool change on my CNC . Mind you, with the work I do these days it is fine. I took on the job for an old customer( a very good one) who didnt have time to make this batch himself. The Cyprus planter boxes are part of a batch I have made for alongside my workshop.
