22.01.2022 Offering Good Help In times of heartache and pain, well-meaning people have said to meLet me know if I can do something for you. I have thanked them, graciously I hope, but never took them up on their offer. Not because I didn’t need support, help and care but because it was already hard enough to put one foot in front of the other, with no energy to spare to think about what this person could do to help or pick up the phone to give instructions. Sometimes I felt angry beca...use the offer of help, so sorely needed, seemed to put responsibility on me, and clear the person offering of any further need to act. I know I am not the only one who has felt like this so I thought of a couple of different ways of how we can possibly offer real help to another who is going through a hard time. Something like the following might be more helpful: ‘What is the best way that I can help you?’ ‘What is the one important thing I could do for you right now?’ ‘Give me a list of five things you need done this next week’ ‘You said earlier that you needed to get X done, would it be helpful if I did this for you?’ ‘What is the best time for me to come by and do X for you?’ Not perfect but a start. On this side is giving more than is easy, on the other is receiving in abundance. On this side is productivity and output, on the other is absorbing at a gentle pace. 07.01.2022 I've only recently learned that children as young as 10 years old can be arrested, charged, brought before a court, sentenced and locked up behind bars. I am shocked.
