19.01.2022 Nationals Just Over 2 Months Away One of the great unknown when organizing a championship is just many boats will turn up...fleet sizes at the nationals have been growing strongly In recent years. (we had 95 boats earlier this year in the Victorian championships alone). The message remains though - the nationals remain the biggest event on the Sabre calendar. A huge fleet, a great buzz, lots of like- minded sailors and their families, a great social program, and a great place... for a holiday. Don't be put off by our hope that this will be the biggest Sabre nationals ever with over 100 boats. The start lines are long; and so long as you aren't trying to share that really sought after real estate in the final 20m of the start line then there should be room for all ! We're adopting the same race format as was used in both of the last 2 nationals - ie the new 'default' format that the class hopes will be seen going forward. Assuming the wind behaves; it will be an all afternoon regatta; with 8 of the 9 races being done on a back-to-back basis. We will however ensure we have the flexibility to alter the format or timing if the winds don't behave. (Would that ever happen at a sailing championship ?) Our Principal Race Officer is confident that he will be able to conduct the racing with a 'single fleet' - ie we're not yet that big that we'd need to split into "Gold" and "Silver" fleets or whatever. We're planning on having all boats being able to be stored and rigged in the areas immediately in front of the club this time - not the other side of the pier like the last time we were at Blairgowrie. We're going all out to make this as fun a regatta off the water as on it. So it might be best not to plan too many quiet nights in front of the TV. We'll have 4 organised Sabre nights at the club over the week Get your entry in !

15.01.2022 Rex Fettell Cup at Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron Nov 12th 2011 The Victorian Association will be hosting the Rex Fettell Cup at Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron on 12 November 2011. This is intended to be a warmup race for the Nationals so it would be great to see as many Victorians as possible experiencing the National Titles waters and taking the opportunity to prepare for the big event. It will also include the Sabres sponsoring a race for the Victorian Minnows fleet which Rex also designed and which has supplied many of our Sabre Youth sailors. Race start time is 2pm, hope to see you there.

10.01.2022 Go for Gold Regatta - Black Rock 26th & 27th Nov 2011 Go for Gold remains Australia’s only true ‘coaching’ regatta where recognised coaches can be in the race area during the entire event. This gives sailors and coaches the unique opportunity of immediate feedback and improvement from their coaches in a real race environment. This year, the Sabre class have arranged on-water video in the form of both in-boat (GoPro cameras onboard) and rescue boat footage during racing. Gary McLennan and Chris Dance will be collecting the video footage and conducting a debrief after racing each day. A good Sabre fleet is expected and sailors are encourage to enter the regatta this week. Notice of Race and Online Entry Form on Black Rock Yacht Club Website

08.01.2022 Sabre Nationals 2011-12 - A Great Success This week saw the conclusion of one of the largest regattas that Blairgowrie has hosted with the last of 10 races and a presentation dinner for the Sabre class national championships. With 130 entries, the fleet will be in the top handful of class championships in Australia this year, and was easily the biggest in the history of the class. The event coincided with a delightful week of weather and saw all races conducted in moderate co...nditions. Blairgowrie's facilities were certainly stretched, but with careful locating of boats; hiring of temporary buildings; the re-opening of car-parking beside the road, the creation of a temporary bar downstairs; the scheduling of racing in the afternoons only so as to avoid sail training and the keeping clear of the lawn areas meant that the club coped surprisingly well. The racing was conduced by Rear Commodore Peter Southwell as Principal Race Officer who did a sterling job at setting courses and start lines and generally over-seeing all of the races. Conducting starts with fleets of this size requires a lot of experience and a great team, and all agreed that the team on the start boat, pin-end boat, mark laying boat, patrol boat fleet, and regatta office did a fantastic job with the starts, courses, results processing and decisions re the scheduling of races. Around 40 volunteers helped out over the course of the week, and our thanks go out to every one of you. Our thanks too go to the organise group whose efforts laid the foundations for a very well organised regatta. The event was won by last year's winner - Black Rock sailor Chris Dance; with two Adelaide sailors Mark Soulsby and Craig McPhee in 2nd and 3rd; with Blairgowrie's Wayne Bates in 4th. It was without doubt the most competitive Sabre fleet ever assembled, with many sailors having highly impressive national and international sailing credentials prior to moving into the Sabre class. The regatta also saw the largest number of youth entries yet seen in the class with 17 entries; and it was fantastic to see Blairgowrie's Liam Edleston win the trophy in his first year in the class. Jasper Pluim's 3rd place was also impressive given he only competed in 6 of the races. The racing was exciting, and provided close boat-to-boat experiences that will be long remembered by all who took part. The starts and mark roundings in particular saw concentrations of boats that could only be described as awesome - and provided fantastic racing at all parts of the fleet. For Blairgowrie's 42 entrants - it will take a long time before we stop talking about this fantastic week at the start of 2012 with the best racing we've ever had.

02.01.2022 GO FOR GOLD Regatta - as Seen by Harold Medd Go for Gold proved to be a very testing event worthy of the title. Race 1 stopped before it started with a dash for the shore amidst a wild squall, reduced visibility and the wind well above acceptable levels. The race eventually got underway an hour and a half later in a fresh wind and a very lumpy uncomfortable sea. Nick won a closely fought battle with Chris. The start of race 2 saw the wind increasing and the sea becoming v...ery steep. Some top end sailors ( names withheld for legal reasons) were seen to be enjoying a swim on the downhill leg. This enabled some of us to get a bit further up the leader board than would normally be expected. The race was won by Pete with Chris again being the bridesmaid. Race 3 was postponed to another day as the wind increased and the rescue boats were fully occupied. To her credit visiting flyweight Susannah finished both races leaving some of the heavier crews wondering where they went wrong. Day 2 was the exact opposite. Racing started on time with a decent breeze but a lot of chop. The 10knot wind still held enough tricks to catch out two of our number downwind ( No Names) with a dose of the rolly pollys and a cooling swim. Chris finally managed top spot, this time with Matt as bridesmaid. Race 4 started in a falling wind. It took a long time to get to the windward mark where a strong tide had many helms taking several shots at getting around. The race ended partway up the second beat with no wind and the tide slowly pushing boats towards Frankston. Nick was in the lead but there are no points for a half completed race so the overall winner was Chris with Nick second and Tim third. Congratulations Chris, Nick and Tim. Pete was badly behaved under a black flag start and dropped out of a very close battle for the top places. It was a good event and I for one will be feeling the effects of it for the rest of the week.
