14.01.2022 "I work for disAbility Living Inc as a Community Support worker, where I help people with disabilities with a range of activities in their daily living. I am passionate about working with people. I was working as security in a hospital where I couldn't approach people or encourage them. If they needed something I had to call on the nurses. That’s why I decided to change my career to be as disability support worker to allow me to work WITH people and to better understand what... they needed. I try to remember the five simple rules to be happy: 1. Free your heart from hatred. 2. Free your mind from worries. 3. Live Simply. 4. Give more. 5. Expect less." - Mokero, disAbility Living Inc A huge #HereForSA thank you to Mokero - who changed his entire career path to follow his passion for helping others. We're particularly thankful for his five rules of happiness - which are a great reminder of how we can stay resilient during a very difficult year. Learn more about the campaign at bit.ly/HereForSA

09.01.2022 While the SA State Budget made big investments into infrastructure and other recovery measures, it missed out on making targeted investment into social housing & workforce re-entry of those most impact by COVID19 pandemic - including women, migrants and refugees, young people and older workers. Stay tuned for the SACOSS Budget Snapshot, where we'll outline all the changes our sector should be aware of. Read more in our media release: https://bit.ly/SACOSSBudget2020

08.01.2022 Are you someone who is currently applying for or living on a Disability Support Payment? The Senate is investigating the experiences of people living on or trying to access Disability Support Payments - and submissions close this Friday. If you are comfortable sharing your experiences, this is a great opportunity to share the overwhelming harm caused by the strict eligibility requirements and application process, as well as payment adequacy. Your submission does not need to ...be long. It just needs to reflect your experience. Submissions can be made via the Raise the Rate website. See more

02.01.2022 "I'm an Aboriginal Aged Care Advocate with the Aged Rights Advocacy Service. My role is to share with Aboriginal Elders and older people information about their consumer right, choice and decision-making when accessing aged care services and residential care. I love seeing the confidence in our Aboriginal Elders faces and hearing the assertiveness in their voices when they have their issues of concern sorted." - Trischia, Aged Rights Advocacy Service (ARAS)... This #NAIDOC Week, we are celebrating First Nations community sector workers. Workers like Trischia are strong advocates for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, and bring an invaluable and necessary perspective to service provision. This is essential for ensuring we keep Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people's needs, wants and perspectives at the heart of what we do. Thanks Trischia for being #HereForSA! #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe Learn more about the campaign at bit.ly/HereForSA

02.01.2022 SACOSS, together with other groups, has sent a letter to the SA Premier about the recent lockdown, the government's response, and some of the vulnerabilities posed by insecure work. We are very lucky in SA to have got many things right, but there is still work to do. Our health response will only be as strong as the structures, social and economic, that underpin it. https://www.sacoss.org.au/letter-sa-premier

Thanks Jane, for helping refugees to settle into our community.... Learn more about the campaign at bit.ly/HereForSA

01.01.2022 Highly disappointed by the government's decision to again avoid making a permanent, adequate increase to #JobSeeker. While a commitment to extend the Coronavirus Supplement until next March is better than returning to the original rate in December, cutting the supplement to $150 is a devastating move. With many Aussies facing long stretches of unemployment, we desperately need a payment that offers continued financial security. An extra $150 per fortnight is simply not enoug...h to combat rental or mortgage stress, buy fresh food and still keep on top of bills for many families. #RaisetheRateforGood See more

01.01.2022 #HealCountry "requires understanding the depths of Indigenous peoples’ connections to Country and treasuring our heritage values. But understanding and treasuring will only go so far in the face of increased drought, more severe storms or changing seasons and animal behaviours as a result of climate change."
