23.01.2022 In all sailboat races, you must sail toward better pressure as more wind velocity almost always means more speed. On the course look for darker water as changes in wind velocity are a lot easier to see than changes in direction. More wind creates more ripples on the water, and these appear darker because of how they reflect light. Be careful though to consider variations in sunlight and clouds when assessing heading over to darker looking patches on the course. 21.01.2022 Sailing fitness is often overlooked but it is one of the weapons that we can achieve with minimum cost and a little effort. A new sail or a new piece of gear has a finite life but fitness is something that has benefits both on and off the boat forever as long as you have a regime to maintain it. 20.01.2022 Headstay sag affects everything from boat speed to pointing ability. Sailboats with headstay sag often point higher and maintain boatspeed better in light-air conditions and one of the key methods to power up a sail is to induce sag in the forestay. Dinghies obviously only have one jib and many sailboat classes limit the number of jibs that a boat may carry so the ability to be able to power up and down is very important in changing conditions. 19.01.2022 Many sailors have poor gust response and in gusts, there is a tendency to fight the boat with hiking and often too much steering to control power. In keelboats, we often see the boat heeling too much, the helmsman pinching and employing corrective steers which leads to unnecessary strain on the boat and crew causing reduced speed and lower VMG.... https://www.sailingtowinblog.com//secrets-and-tips-on-han/

18.01.2022 By Malcolm Page, Australia’s most successful Olympic sailor People often ask me what makes a winning sailor. I mostly get the impression that they are after some special Jedi mind trick that mentally makes someone a champion. With the focus these days on sports psychology, people often forget that before you worry about your mind, you first need to worry about getting the basics right.... https://www.sailingtowinblog.com//sailing-success-begins-/

17.01.2022 On reaches and runs it is essential that the helmsman and trimmer communicate and co-ordinate their actions. As the helmsman, you must also respond to input from the tactician and changing sailing conditions plus the trimmers input based on sheet load and boat speed. The problem here is that there may be conflicting voices advising the steerer thus unsettling his concentration. [ 522 more words ] https://www.sailingtowinblog.com//how-to-be-effective-ste/

15.01.2022 What you feel in your tiller or wheel gives you an indication as to what is right or wrong with your sails and the balance of the boat. What the helmsman feels is dictated by sail trim, centreboard position, mast rake, heel and crew weight placement. With excessive helm, the steerer is working against the boats natural course. By eliminating excessive helm you decrease rudder drag and thus increase boat speed. [ 391 more words ] https://sailingtowinblog.com/2020/07/15/read-your-helm/

14.01.2022 You don't need any special hardware to do live tracking. Use your smartphone with the TackTracker app for iPhone or Android and instantly create a live race or training session. 13.01.2022 The best way to get started and build your initial skills is to get tuition either at club level or with a course provided by your National sailing body. If your initial sailing was not in a club environment, joining a club is one of the most important steps to move your skills forward and it's through a club network that people can improve and develop their sailing. 11.01.2022 We all love to race but racing is sometimes a slow way to learn how to make your boat faster. Two boat training is one of the best ways to get rapid on water improvement but importantly, the training must be structured to get the quickest results. and I have set out below, some elements that will guarantee a successful on-water experience. 11.01.2022 Windward mark layline mistakes, unfortunately, are very common and can be extremely costly. One of the most common things that sailors get wrong is getting to the layline too early. If you get to the layline too early, you can no longer play the shifts and you also lose tactical options. More often than not it is really hard to judge laylines without a good visual reference and wind changes, dirty air, waves, or current are all outside factors that you need to take into account. 08.01.2022 Having the right crew on your boat is as important as the sails and equipment and contributes completely to the fun you have both on the boat racing and afterwards off the boat socialising. As a skipper and leader on your boat, an enormous amount of time should be spent putting your race crew together. With the right mix of skills and personalities, you are guaranteed to not only race well but keep the team together because they have fun and look forward to the next race or event. 08.01.2022 In light air - steer to a higher luff telltale which will find you sailing a little lower, one of the biggest mistakes many helmsmen make in light airs is to pinch. It is important for the trimmer to use all the telltales both up the luff and on the leech to get the whole sail working efficiently. 05.01.2022 Often too much significance is attributed to sailing tactics and tactics only become the most important factor if you are sailing at a very high level. For most of us, it’s better to invest in training time, concentrating on sailing technique and boat tuning. As a word of caution though, you can't manage without tactics altogether. I have jotted down below, a couple of rules, that if you follow, you'll be better than 80% of the competition unless of course, you are sailing at World Cup level. 05.01.2022 Upwind sail power comes from 3 sources: The angle of attack. Depth in the sail (draft) and twist. When trimming our sails we want to get our boat to full power and we must adjust for the sailing conditions by altering the three power sources listed above. Sails are built so that they can perform in a variety of conditions but must be fine-tuned by the sail trimmer to achieve the designed shape of the sail. 05.01.2022 Excerpt from Speed and Smarts Newsletter issue 131 - David Dellenbaugh Almost every sailor realizes the importance of making a strategic plan for the first leg before they start the race but how many of those sailors also develop a strategy for every other leg in the race? It’s tough to make a game plan for the second leg before starting the race, but you should do this sometime before you begin that leg.... https://www.sailingtowinblog.com//always-have-a-plan-for-/
