21.01.2022 ‘End of the Line’, by Mr Roy Cameron, OAM, commemorates the Centenary of the Coolah Railway. He writes that there was no official function to celebrate the open...ing of the line, possibly due to the Spanish Flu epidemic, which immediately followed World War I. Coolah recorded an estimated ten deaths, even though facial masking was in place, all indoor amusements and outdoor gatherings were prohibited, schools were closed, as were the state borders. In 1920, Coolah welcomed the train service to the town. It was a momentous advancement for our district to enable people to travel to Sydney or where er they wanted to go. All goods and people travelled in horse-drawn carts and Cobb & Co serviced Coolah from Mudgee. There were only a few cars think Model t Fords or similar. A few families owned large areas of the countryside, and these were share farmed or grazed. Government schemes were initiated to populate the area with more intensive agriculture. Closer settlement schemes and soldier settlement schemes could only be successful if produce could be moved quickly and cost-effectively to markets. See more
