25.01.2022 Before being allowed to run for parliament anywhere in Australia candidates must first pay a deposit. The purpose is to reduce the number of non-serious candidacies. But what if the cost of the deposit becomes too high? South Australian deposits are the most expensive of any state or territory by far. Our latest research paper explores why deposits are so high here and the effects (positive + negative) that raised entry costs can have on democracy. See https://bit.ly/3ejfM52 #ECSA #saparli

18.01.2022 Here is our ICT guru Andrew preparing for the City of Onkaparinga (Mid Coast Ward) supplementary election count on Tuesday. Andrew is making sure all the data entry terminals are tested and ready to go. For most council elections we count the ballots by hand. However, when we have a large number of candidates (such as the record supp number of 18 in this election),a manual process might involve hundreds of counts (preference redistributions) until we determined the winner. I...n these cases we use software called Easy Count it’s the same software we used for the Legislative Council (upper house) at the last state election. After we finish opening the thousands of envelopes to remove the ballots, which will take most of the morning, teams of staff will check each ballot and enter the preferences into Easy Count (twice). Easy Count will then ‘crunch the numbers’ and provide a result in a matter of minutes compared to many hours if it was done manually. Don't forget that if you're a Mid Coast elector and you haven't voted yet, you still have time to get your vote in. Your best option is to drop it in the ballot box at the City of Onkaparinga council office at the Noarlunga Centre during office hours before 12 noon this Monday 7 September 2020

18.01.2022 #TBT to the early 1900s when mobile voting looked like this! During elections, polling booths were set up on trains giving people living remotely and with limited access to transport the opportunity to vote. Whenever the train stopped at a station, the public were able to hop on board and vote. ... This interesting fact was taken from the 1908 Electoral Code of South Australia https://bit.ly/33E8ox4 #ECSA #saparli #southaustralia #history

17.01.2022 This week is National Carers Week, a time for us all to recognise the thousands of South Australians who provide unpaid care to family members and friends who have a disability, mental health condition, chronic condition, terminal illness, an alcohol or other drug issue or who are frail aged. Did you know that if you are a carer you may be eligible to sign up to be a permanent postal voter? If you sign up you will automatically receive your ballot papers in the mail for ever...y state or federal election. You do not need to re-apply for future elections, and you won’t need to worry about travelling to a voting centre at election time. More information here https://bit.ly/3dhizLr #ECSA #Carers2020

13.01.2022 At South Australia’s 2018 State Election, 40,067 incompletely marked House of Assembly ballot papers were saved from informality and added to the count thanks to voting tickets a little known and unique provision of our lower house elections. Without voting tickets, SA would have the highest informality in Australia. But they are not exempt from criticism. Our latest Electoral Backgrounder explores how voting tickets work, their advantages and drawbacks, and what alternati...ves there are to address the state’s high levels of informality. 08.01.2022 We’ve had 129 different electorate names in South Australia since Parliament was inaugurated in 1857: 67 named after famous people, 59 named after places, and 3 given an Aboriginal name. In the lead-up to the release of the final redistribution report of the Electoral Districts Boundaries Commission, our latest Briefing Paper looks at the naming conventions of electorates around Australia and the pros and cons of each option. 06.01.2022 Test your knowledge of Australian politics by giving this ‘Quiz Sheet’ a go! The crossword was taken from The South Australian Electoral System booklet that was published back in the 1980s (let’s be honest that font is a dead giveaway). The publication traced the history of politics in South Australia with the objective of encouraging greater participation in the democratic process. Comment below and let us know how you went! ... #ECSA

03.01.2022 It’s #WaybackWednesday! The year was 1985 and South Australia became the first state in Australia to introduce cardboard ballot boxes at an election. This was a significant improvement on the clunky, heavy metal and wooden ballot boxes. The first official use of reusable cardboard ballot boxes was on 7 December 1985 at the state election. They now feature at elections across the country and in many parts of the world! ... https://bit.ly/35lScAx #ECSA #saparli
