25.01.2022 Fifty years ago on Sunday 18 January we (Ian, Sonja and six-month-old Sharon) set sail on MS Achille Lauro from Port Melbourne to South Africa en route to Chikankata Secondary School in Zambia. (You can read more about the trip and our service in Africa in 'Safely Let to Serve: A Joint Biography' [Balboa Press] from page 61.)

12.01.2022 "Throughout the months of 1983, the members of the Hobart, Moonah and Howrah Corps were involved in preparation for the Gowans and Larsson musical ‘Glory’. This musical was based around the events that took place during the commencement of The Salvation Army in seaside Folkstone, England, as related in Edward Joy’s book The Old Corps. As such, the musical seemed especially relevant for presentation during the centenary of the commencement of a corps in the port city of Hobart.... Ian accepted a cameo role as ‘Mayor Crook’ who incited a group which would become a ‘skeleton army’ to attack and exterminate the fledgling corps. ‘Drive them into the harbour or else into hell! Take their blessèd flag and tie it around their necks and hang ’em!’ Nine months of rehearsals led to three public decisions following the performance and one other seekera stage handon the Sunday before."
