09.01.2022 World Science Festival Brisbane is coming up really soon and on the 24th and 25th of March, QARPS (Queensland Australasian Radiation Protection Society) will be having a street science stall. South Bank Parklands will turn into a science playground with dozens of FREE immersive activities for everyone to enjoy. Come along and participate in hands-on activities. Along with many other activities at the stall Safe Radiation will be bringing along a cloud chamber, have a watch of the video below of the cloud chamber in action. Bookings are NOT required for this event.



06.01.2022 Today marks the 118th birthday of Nobel Laureate Frédéric Joliot-Curie. He worked at the Radium Institute as an assistant to Marie Curie in 1925, and later married her daughter, Iréne Curie, in 1926. The pair (Frédéric and Iréne) discovered artificial radioactivity in 1934 which earned them the 1935 Nobel Prize for Chemistry. They discovered artificial radioactivity through the bombardment alpha particles on boron, aluminium, and magnesium. This produced nitrogen-13, phosphor...us-30, silicon-27 and aluminium-28. These radioisotopes are not found naturally and they are short lived and gave off beta particles and positrons. Frédéric passed away in 1958. In the world today, from nuclear medicine to non-destructive testing, synthetic radioisotopes play an important role in health sciences and in the industry. Small sources of alpha particles that were used by Irene and Frédéric for isotope production at the Radium Institute might have been replaced by immense nuclear reactors and accelerators, yet their pioneering contributions remain, it seems the work of Frédéric Joliot-Curie has a very long half-life indeed.
