24.01.2022 V.... is for Vaginal Health . All us females have one, yet the health of it is not discussed too often. . A healthy balance of bacteria (your vaginal microbiome is predominately Lactobacilli) is significantly influenced by our hormones, as well as nutrition, gut health, how we care for it, and much more.... . Say no to soaps, douching, and over-cleaning. . Say yes to eating a wide range of prebiotic and probiotic foods (fibres, plant-foods, yoghurts & other fermented foods). . Since vaginal health & the vaginal microbiome is linked back to fertility (IVF) outcomes, it's always something to explore with fertility care too. . See more

24.01.2022 It’s not called the silly season for no reason!

22.01.2022 U.... is for Uterine Fibroids . Do any of these signs or symptoms ring true for you? . Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous muscular growths that occur within or stemming from the uterus. ... . You may have no idea you have them and no obvious symptoms, or you may get some symptoms as described (heavy bleeding, pelvic congestion etc). . They should show up via an ultrasound scan of the pelvis. . From a naturopathic perspective, uterine fibroids grow with excess oestrogen, so figuring out why your hormones may be imbalanced, and supporting healthy oestrogen clearance is often a starting place for addressing them. . While looking at what got you there in the first place...? What's causing your hormones to be imbalanced? . Side note... I often get asked, how do I know if my period is heavy when I have nothing to compare it to?!! First step, track it. . Use one of the many wonderful period-tracking apps (Flo, Clue, Period Tracker etc) to note down how often you're changing a tampon, pad or menstrual cup, and whether there are clots etc. Then an estimate on flow can be drawn from that info. . And remember, just because things may be common (heavy periods, pain, fatigue) doesn't make them normal. You don't have to live with it. . @ Burleigh, Queensland, Australia See more

22.01.2022 T.... is for Thyroid. . An amazing butterfly-shaped gland in your neck, that controls your metabolism. . If you're struggling with your hormones or fertility, and you've never had your thyroid checked.... you should. ... . Your thyroid influences your whole body, and the hormonal balance, so it's a very big piece of your hormonal puzzle. . When people have an under-functioning thyroid, this slows down the metabolism, and everything slows down. Constipation, fatigue, weight gain (and difficulty losing weight), low mood, dry skin, heavier periods... these are all signs pointing towards your thyroid not functioning properly. . On the flip side, unexplained excess energy, losing weight, anxiety, light periods, loose bowels, and tremors, are all clues it may be over-functioning, which is an imbalance in itself. . You need healthy thyroid function, and sufficient thyroid hormone to make healthy eggs & embryos, and to support a healthy pregnancy. So, assessing your thyroid health in fertility is a must. . As I say time and time again, naturopathy is about addressing the root cause. Which is why I love to ask so many questions. . Because, if you're experiencing symptoms such as heavy periods, then looking into WHY this might be occurring (e.g. is your thyroid imbalanced or is your immune system impacting your thyroid health) and addressing this, will be more beneficial in the long term. . 20.01.2022 S.... is for Sugar . . Sugar (including refined carbohydrates) can wreak havoc on hormones, and impact fertility. .... When we eat high levels of sugar, this can spike a hormone called insulin. . This spike leads to a reduction in a protein called sex-hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). When SHBG is low, this can lead to increases in oestrogen and testosterone. We can also get increased fat tissue, which contributes to more unhealthy oestrogen. We need oestrogen, it's wonderful hormone, but not in excess. . When eating high levels of sugar and refined carbs becomes a long-term occurrence, imbalances can occur, particularly between oestrogen and progesterone, leading to symptoms of PMS, weight gain, irritability, anxiety and more. . From a fertility perspective, sugar has been shown to have a detrimental effect on the endometrium which may impact implantation. So, it's a definite area to address. . Remember, your hormones balance is like a symphony all working together. And if one trombone is out of tune, this can impact the whole symphony. . So, bottom line is keeping the added sugar intake low. And eat naturally occurring sugar, have it with fibre (e.g. eat the whole fruit with fibre, not fruit juice) or eat with a healthy fat (e.g. a handful of nuts) to help prevent the spikes in sugar and subsequent spikes in insulin. . Keeping your blood sugar balanced is key to keeping your hormones balanced! See more

19.01.2022 During my weekly farmers market meander today, I found loads of gorgeous purple produce! Purple cauli, kale, broccoli, & more!... The purple colour shows the amazing antioxidants within the food, notably anthocyanins. This plant chemical exerts anti inflammatory properties, and is important to get into your daily diet. When there’s too much inflammation, periods can be worse & more painful, more body & joint aches, headaches, fatigue & skin breakouts. So, keep inflammation low by getting lots of colours in your daily diet and always make sure there’s purple in there!

19.01.2022 E..... is for endometrium. . Uterine lining. . When trying to fall pregnant, the health and thickness of the endometrium is super important for both conceiving and maintaining a healthy pregnancy. ... . In the average ovulating woman, the endometrium goes through cyclical changes each month, with its sole purpose of establishing a healthy pregnancy. . To start off, during the follicular phase (the first half of your cycle, from your period through to ovulation), your endometrium thickens in response to rising oestrogen from a maturing egg within a follicle. . After ovulating, the hormone progesterone rises. This is crucial for maintaining and supporting the lining. . If it's your month to conceive, approximately 6-7 days after ovulation, the embryo will seek to implant into the thickened endometrium. . And that's when some real magic happens! . Intricate and precise communication happens between the embryo and the uterus. Yes - they "talk" to each other! . Coupled with a healthy immune system, cells from the embryo should be able to invade and implant within the endometrial lining. . If any of these steps were hindered (or if there was no embryo waiting to implant), then progesterone and oestrogen drop, leading to a shedding of the lining.... a period. . There are certain beautiful naturopathic herbs to help support the endometrial lining, if this is an issue for you! . . . . . . . . . . #sagenaturopathics #goldcoastfertility #burleighnaturopath #naturalfertility #naturopath #naturopathgoldcoast #carolineandersonnaturopath #ttc #journeytobaby #tryingforbaby #ivfsuccess #mitochondrialhealth #reproductivehealth #preconceptioncare #fertilitysupport #healthyblastocyst #endometrium #ivf See more

19.01.2022 A..... for anxiety. . Starting with a biggie! . .... Racing heart, inability to concentrate, excessive worry or fear, racing thoughts, nausea, irritability, trembling... any of this sound familiar? . You wouldn't believe how common this is, and how often I hear this from women in clinic. . Did you know fluctuations in oestrogen levels (and it's ratio to progesterone) throughout both your menstrual cycle and at various stages throughout your lifecycle, exert profound effects on feelings of anxiety. Even potentially developing an anxiety disorder. . Furthermore, other hormones, such as your thyroid or those involved with blood sugar regulation, may be imbalanced, leading to feelings of anxiety. . So, the bottom line is, you don't have to live this way! It doesn't need to be how you will always feel. . Know that it is extremely common, you're not alone. And there is a lot that can be done to balance things and improve the way you feel. . My top tips: - get a decent nights sleep - implement daily practices for stress management - cut out alcohol & caffeine - Keep away from high sugar foods . While a full assessment needs to be done to look at the root cause, these tips are all starting points for balancing hormones and reducing feelings of anxiety. . . 19.01.2022 Stress has such a huge impact on hormones & can lead to PMS symptoms. So, if you’ve been feeling particularly hormonal the last few months, it might be due to the pandemic-related stress. Work on your stress management, and it can help balance your hormones ... https://www.nbcnews.com//coronavirus-pms-or-pandemic-pms-r

18.01.2022 I..... is for inflammation. . Inflammation in itself is not a bad thing, and is used to help heal the body when you have trauma or sickness. But when it is long-lasting (weeks, months, or even years), and can affect the whole body, that's when it becomes an issue, known as Chronic Inflammation. . And what does this have to do with hormones?... . Hormones and inflammation are closely linked. . When there are issues with your period (such as period pain) there is inflammation going on. . Inflammation also gets in the way of the hormones being able to do their job, and can negatively impact the normal hormone fluctuations. . Furthermore, some hormones increase inflammation (such as oestrogen, prolactin, insulin) and some reduce inflammation (such as testosterone, DHEA and cortisol). . And if there's something like too much oestrogen going on, this can add to the inflammation. . So, if you're finding that some of the symptoms above are ringing true for you, you may need to work on reducing overall inflammation. . How do I do that?!?! . First, a great place to start is to limit pro-inflammatory foods, such as refined sugars, vegetable oils, wheat, dairy, and alcohol. . Keeping your blood sugar more stable, helps keep your insulin levels in check (remember I said high insulin increases inflammation), and keeps your weight under control too (being overweight also increases inflammation). . Then general lifestyle choices can worsen inflammation: - Lack of sleep - Lack of exercise - High stress - Environmental toxins - Smoking . So working on those too. . So, as you can see - often it can be a cycle. One things goes out, and it can be a cycle that feeds itself. Do something to break the cycle of inflammation, to help your hormones. . Bookmark this, if you need to refer to it later . . . . . . . . . . . . . #sagenaturopathics #goldcoastfertility #burleighnaturopath #naturalfertility #naturopath #naturopathgoldcoast #carolineandersonnaturopath #healthyliving #naturalhealthtips #chronicinflammation #healthyhormones #healthyperiods #periodpain #endometriosis See more

15.01.2022 Prayers & thoughts are being echoed around the world

13.01.2022 "Vulnerability is at the core, the centre, of meaningful experiences"..... Brene Brown . And today I'm choosing to be vulnerable. . The last 6 weeks have been personally challenging. And I know many of you may have felt similar.... . I have wanted to be there, continue to show up on socials and share knowledge for you all, as it's what I love to do. But I found myself retreating, just dealing with current clients & online consultations, prioritising things, helping my two young school-aged daughters with the adjustment of restrictions, and trying to make some sense of what is going on. . I found all these changes stressful and tiring. Then I felt guilty that it was stressful for me when other people around the world were dealing with much more dire, life or death, situations. . Initially, I was beating myself up about not being more productive, and not sharing more online & continuing previous commitments to the same level. I thought that with all this 'free time', it was the perfect opportunity to be creative & productive. . But I've come to realise, this is not 'free time' or just a break from commitments. We are dealing with something pretty darn major. There is uncertainty, fear, and adjustments happening daily. And I'm now comfortable to release the feelings of false expectations. . I think it's ok to not be your most productive. We are all going through this crisis together, but our ways of dealing with it may be different. . Personally, I feel the clouds are now clearing for me, and I'm feeling in a better space to be more productive again. While we are unsure what the near future holds, I've found myself settling into some new version of normality. . And, I'm here for you. I'm well aware fertility desires & hormonal fluctuations don't get put on hold during a pandemic. They are there now more than ever. . I love your questions. Shoot me a DM or email - I love to hear from you. Also, I'm still available for appointments (both online & limited face-to-face). . And, as always, thank you to YOU. I love showing up for you. ~ Caroline See more

13.01.2022 What are you doing today to connect with nature? . Now that restrictions are lifting, it's the perfect time to ensure we keep up our connection with nature and head out for a walk. . It's been shown to have so many wonderful benefits, such as reducing anxiety, lifting low mood, improving immunity, and just making you feel pretty good!! ... . Even the grandfather of health, Hippocrates, said: "walking is man's best medicine". . If going for a walk is not possible today, make sure you've figured out your way of connecting with nature, even if it's as simple as taking your shoes off and walking on the grass outside. Even that has benefits. . Happy Sunday! See more

11.01.2022 Awesome! Such great news that IVF is back on for those that need it!!

11.01.2022 K..... is for Ketogenic . You've probably heard of the Keto Diet? . Is it good for fertility? And what about hormones? ... . In case you don't know what it is, the Keto Diet is where you focus on heavily restricting carbs, and increasing fat, with a moderate amount of protein. . When you eat like this, the body eventually uses fat for its main source of fuel, making it often great for weight loss. . Let's start with hormones. For someone who has PCOS, the keto diet may work well, as it's been shown to improve insulin sensitivity. Plus, even a 5% body weight reduction has been shown to improve PCOS symptoms, such as irregular cycles. . But, the Keto Diet can also place temporarily added stress on the body, so if stress management is already an issue, it may not be the best approach right now. Although this does vary from person to person. . From a fertility perspective, when you're trying to create a baby, my overall approach is to nourish and feed the woman. Not restrict eating. There are benefits in the nutrients that healthy carbohydrates provide (B Vitamins, minerals, and dietary fibre), that are important for fertility health. . While there are benefits to a healthy weight range (higher treatment success rates, lower miscarriage rates etc) I usually like to take a more balanced approach in achieving this. Again, this does depend on the individual. . There is some research on the Keto Diet improving hormone levels such as FSH, LH and testosterone. I view this as quite reductionist, and only focusing on one part of fertility There is plenty of research on the benefits of following a Mediterranean Diet, so this is where I'm sticking for now. . So, it's not a huge "NO" for Keto Diet and fertility, and there may be some occasions when it's beneficial, but across the board, it's definitely not yet a big "YES" from me. . . . . . . . . . . . . #sagenaturopathics #goldcoastfertility #burleighnaturopath #naturalfertility #naturopath #naturopathgoldcoast #carolineandersonnaturopath #ttc #journeytobaby #tryingforbaby #ivfsuccess #reproductivehealth #preconceptioncare #fertilitysupport #healthyblastocyst #ketodiet See more

11.01.2022 Have you wondered what actually goes on in a naturopathic consultation? Lots of people kind of know what a naturopath does, but don't really know what to expect from a consultation. For me, when you come for an appointment at Sage Naturopathics, it's about finding out exactly what is going on for you (like fatigue, heavy periods, hormonal acne, digestive issues, PMS...) by diving deep and asking a milion questions on your experience and how that impacts your life. ... Then always striving to find the root cause. Very often people think their symptoms are unrelated. For example, you might be suffering from constipation, heavy periods, and increasing weight). But for me, often they're related and have a root cause, and I can explain to you why. You leave the appointment with loads of specific practical advice (a treatment plan) on what to address first and what will make the most difference it getting you feeling well again. It's the practical advice that can make all the difference. I may formulate an individualised herbal tonic, or give a practitioner-only top quality product to support your healing. So, in a nutshell - it's about finding a root cause, using nature and natural medicine to help the body heal itself, and educating you in managing your own health in the long term. If you would like to chat further about your specific situation, and how I may be able to support you with your health goals, book yourself a free 15 minute chat with me. Click the link in the bio & click on go 'book your appointment'. It's completely free. I look forward to chatting with you! ~ Caroline See more

10.01.2022 Is coffee all that bad? Yes and No For me, it's about how, when, what and how much someone is having. And what their current health goals are.... If you're having one cup per day, made from quality coffee, you're drinking it not too late in the day, but not the first thing to get you out of bed, and it's made with a milk that is suitable for your digestion, then I think it's not such a bad thing. And there are probably more important things to address and "bigger fish to fry", so to speak! If you're dragging yourself out of bed to reach straight for your morning coffee, you're having instant coffee (think preservatives), and need it to function throughout the day, then it may be time to look at this habit, and what need that coffee is filling for you. Remember, coffee increases cortisol (the stress hormone) so if stress is a factor in your life, the coffee is only going to contribute to it further. Buffer your day with other good habits, such as drinking filtered water, getting enough sleep, adopting good stress-management habits, and you will find you're less dependent on it. If you choose to drink it, keep it to one good quality coffee per day in the mid morning, and sit and enjoy the whole experience. Make it a memorable and pleasurable moment in your day. Happy Hump Day Note: (Fertility & coffee... that’s a whole other post for another day).

10.01.2022 It shouldn’t be painful, but sometimes it is...

10.01.2022 R.... is for Removal of Contraception . As many of you gave feedback that you still wanted hormonal & fertility info during this time, I will pick up where I left off with the A-Z of women's health. And we were up to "R" . One of your questions is - what happens after the removal of synthetic hormonal contraception (e.g. Mirena)...?... . And it often comes down to, why was it used/inserted in the first place? . Was it purely for contraception? How were your periods prior to insertion? Have you done anything major (e.g. worked with a naturopath) while using the Mirena? Do you have any diagnosed conditions e.g. endometriosis, PCOS? What are your goals moving forward? Is it being removed for preference, or for fertility goals? . With any synthetic hormones, the interplay between your own hormones and the reproductive organs have been influenced, so sometimes it takes time to reconnect & recalibrate. . For some, this happens quickly & smoothly, and theoretically, with a Mirena, there weren't high levels of hormones going around your whole system, like with the oral contraceptive pill so it should be quicker. But also not everyone always immediately bounces back, and some come get some pretty unwanted hormonal symptoms. . In an ideal world, naturopathic work can be done prior to removing or stopping contraception, to prepare you for its removal. Get your body in the best place possible prior, and work on the reason why it was initially used (was it for heavy periods?). But also, reach out if it's already out and you haven't returned to normality. Or you're re-experiencing unwanted symptoms. You don't have to live life this way. . See more

08.01.2022 Guys...... are you getting decent sleep?? This may be impacting your sperm! . Brand new research has looked at the effect that sleep habits have on sperm quality and quantity. In this latest study, 842 healthy men gave semen samples for analysis and reported on their sleep habits. Men reporting poor sleep quality had a lower total count, total motility, and progressive motility compared with men reporting good sleep quality.... . Interestingly, having not enough (less than 6 hours) AND too much sleep (more than 9 hours) was associated with reduced semen parameters. . So, while there will be variances for individual sleep needs, it seems around that 7.5-8 hours of quality sleep is the sweet spot to aim for. . If you're struggling with this, here are some of my top tips for if you have trouble getting decent sleep: Prepare yourself one hour before bed. Wind down for the evening, have a warm shower/bath, & only do relaxing activities such as reading No technology late at night, and no devices in the bedroom No caffeine after 12 pm earlier in the day. . . 06.01.2022 Do some days feel completely overwhelming? Like it won't take much at all, and the wave of the day will crash around you and knock you off your feet? You're definitely not alone there!... Every single day, I'm talking to clients about self-care & stress management in one form of another. Self-care has been a buzz word for a little while now, but the crux of it is, doing things just for you, that nourish you - whether that be physically, emotionally, mentally or spiritually. Self-care builds stress resilience. BUT.... and here's the big BUT... sometimes self-care doesn't feel so good. Sometimes, self-care can put you outside your comfort zone. It may involve saying no to someone at the risk of disappointing them. Trimming the diary of appointments and creating space to breathe. Or delegating a task to someone else, when they might not do it as 'perfect' as you. It may be holding yourself accountable & responsible for some of your actions that steal energy from your future self. It can sometimes mean self-boundaries or doing boring jobs that will reduce your future stress. So, enjoy your massages, enjoy your footbaths & facials. That part of self-care rocks! But don't forget the less glamorous side of self-care too. @frankiefoto See more

05.01.2022 C..... is for constipation . . We should be easily passing a formed bowel motion at least once per day. If that is not happening, or there's straining, feelings of not getting it all out, or it's like rabbit poo, then you may be constipated.... . But why is this an issue for hormones? There are a few reasons why... . We are supposed to excrete hormones. Oestrogen, particularly, is processed by the liver and sent into the intestinal tract for excretion. If regular, healthy bowel motions are not happening, then the hormones run the risk of getting picked up and recirculated. Unfortunately, they have also changed due to their previous processing and can cause more issues. . Hello headaches, acne, PMS symptoms, and more. All the fun stuff . Furthermore, if your gut bacteria is imbalanced, you may get higher levels of an enzyme called beta-glucuronidase, which can lead to recirculation of the oestrogens. . But, it's not all bad news. By getting you pooping regularly, and the balance right of the bacteria in your gut (plus potentially some nutrients to help healthy oestrogen clearance). . Keep up the fibre (fruit, veggies, legumes) and lots & lots of filtered water, this will help! . . . . . . . . . . . . . #sagenaturopathics #goldcoastfertility #burleighnaturopath #naturalfertility #naturopath #naturopathgoldcoast #carolineandersonnaturopath #ttc #journeytobaby #tryingforbaby #ivfsuccess #mitochondrialhealth #reproductivehealth #preconceptioncare #fertilitysupport #constipation #healthyoestrogen #micrbiome See more

05.01.2022 H....... is for hair loss. . This can be a pretty frustrating thing to deal with. Most of us take pride in our hair looking nice, and it's often linked in with our feminity. . So when it's clogging up the shower, and stray hairs are wisping loose on our shoulders or shirt backs, with it looking thin on top, we want it to stop! ... . But you guessed it, it may well be those cheeky hormones at play . Hair loss in females is not uncommon, but it's one of those generalised signs, that you need to look further into what may be going on. . A common culprit, especially in females with periods each month, might be iron deficiency - if the ferritin (stored iron) is too low. So this should be ruled out with a simple blood test, and look deeper into why it's low. . Zinc is another important nutrient required for healthy hair growth and maintenance. And those with a vegetarian/vegan diet and those on hormonal birth control ("the pill") are particularly at risk of deficiency. . But before you go supplementing straight away, we also need to consider the type of hair loss too. . If the thinning is concentrated to the front and top (similar to male-pattern baldness) there may be an issue with the androgen hormones which may need balancing. This can be particularly an issue for those with PCOS. . Or if there are large patches of baldness this may be an immune system issue, like alopecia. . Other causes can be autoimmunity, thyroid health, chronic infections, severe stress, and more. . So, by addressing the root cause, this is more likely to have longer-lasting results. But don't forget, with hair regrowth, you need patience! . . . . . . . . . . . #sagenaturopathics #goldcoastfertility #burleighnaturopath #naturalfertility #naturopath #naturopathgoldcoast #carolineandersonnaturopath #healthyliving #naturalhealthtips #hormonalhealth #hairloss #hormonalhairloss #thyroidhealth #PCOS #zinc #irondeficiency See more

05.01.2022 M.... is for Menstrual Migraines . This can have a huge impact on women's daily life when they're in bed with pain, nausea, or can't cope with light or sound. It can happen at different stages of the menstrual cycle, but commonly in the week before the period. . It's a tricky topic because overall it's fairly poorly understood, and there can be many variables and triggers for the individual. One thing that works wonders for one person, doesn't for the next. ... . Migraines are linked with dropping oestrogen levels (which happens in the few days before your period), triggering serotonin levels to drop and causing issues with a facial nerve (trigeminal nerve) involved in migraines. . Medical options usually involve hormonal medications like 'the pill' which comes with its own issues & potential risk factors. . Magnesium is a great starting point for people who suffer migraines. It calms the nervous system, is involved in the body's pain system, and is very often deficient in people who suffer migraines. . Also tuning in to what are other added triggers, such as certain food (e.g. chocolate, peanuts), dehydration, sleep issues. Keeping those in check will help when its the time of the month you most suffer migraines. . Within naturopathy there are some beautiful hormonal herbs that can be used to balance hormones, hopefully easing the sudden drop before the period. . The overall approach to management is to dig deep into someone's triggers for migraines, rebalance any hormonal disturbances, support liver detoxification pathways, and checking for any nutrient deficiencies. . . . . . . . . . . . . #sagenaturopathics #goldcoastfertility #burleighnaturopath #naturalfertility #naturopath #naturopathgoldcoast #carolineandersonnaturopath #healthyliving #naturalhealthtips #menstrualmigraines #howtobalancehormones #pms #hormonalheadaches See more
