23.01.2022 The College had its first Reconciliation Action Plan meeting this morning. This involved a Team of Teachers, Administration Staff, Students and Yugambeh Elders from the Yugambeh Region Aboriginal Corporation Alliance. Elders Ted Williams and Uncle John Graeme with Travis Couch YRACA Chair, worked alongside our College Reconciliation group - Yabrubehma. We look forward to inviting interested school community members to join us in our Reconciliation journey.

23.01.2022 Last week, on Monday and Thursday mornings, our current Prep students welcomed the Preppies who will be starting at Saint Stephen’s College in 2021. On Monday, we all read ‘Pig the Pug’ books and had a chat about friendly and unfriendly behaviours. We worked together to sort behaviours and then explore the classrooms. On Thursday, we went hunting for numbers from 1 to 10 and then used them to make rainbow chains. Both mornings were very well attended and it was fantastic t...o meet so many enthusiastic and smiling faces! Our orientation mornings are a great opportunity for our incoming Prep students to become familiar with the Prep environment, to meet the current Prep teachers, and interact with students from a range of Pre-Prep programs. These mornings are such an important part of our transition program, to alleviate any small worries for the students and to give them a little insight into what ‘big school’ might be like. We all enjoyed the mornings and we are sure that our 2021 cohort will settle into school with no worries at all! Thank you to all the teachers and learning assistants who helped to make the two days a great success. An especially big thank you to all the families who brought their children in to participate in the program. We look forward to welcoming you all back next year!

23.01.2022 Our Father's Day stall, run by the Interact and EarlyAct students, was a great success on Wednesday and Thursday with lots of excited students taking home a lovely gift for Dad or someone special in their life. A huge thank you to everyone who supported this fundraiser, all monies raised will be donated to charity. Happy Father's Day!

22.01.2022 As the year draws to an end and we get the chance to reflect on the highs and lows of 2020, remember, the worst thing that could come from our 2020 experience is for 2021 to be the same as 2019.

22.01.2022 A change of venue for the P&F meeting tonight.

22.01.2022 With students full of spirit and energy our Years 1 to 3 Swimming Carnival was a great success last Friday. Congratulations to Haley House, Champions 2020!

21.01.2022 Head of Science, Mr Iain Taylor is a trailblazer when it comes to promoting the spirit of scientific inquiry, championing innovative learning, and promoting science in action, so it is no surprise that he is one of the four teachers named in The Educator’s annual Hot List which recognises and celebrates professionals who represent the cutting edge of educational excellence in Australia. Mr Taylor leverages the College’s Learning Management System to deliver online blended-lea...rning opportunities for students and constantly works with the eLearning Department to fine-tune the Science LMS courses. He also ensures that teachers cater for individual student needs, with the use of such tools as 3D TV and VR headsets to spark imagination and wonder. Problem solving, testing and experimenting within real-world contexts are foundation stones laid by Mr Taylor in the Science faculty. Mr Taylor has been pivotal in promoting the development of hands-on and engaging STEAM-based activities across the College, including the Science Show and STEAM work for team projects. In 2019 he led a group of our Senior students to China, to take part in the first worldwide pilot of the Chinese person to person Youth STEM exchange, which saw the group visiting nine schools in four districts of China and delivering the Saint Stephen’s College Science show and two additional workshops to over 2,500 students. Well done Iain!

20.01.2022 Grit, determination, spirit and participation are key to winning the House Crystal. Congratulations......... Haley House Crystal Winners 2020!

18.01.2022 A message from Father Andrew At the recent Family Chapel Service, I mentioned our efforts with supporting the Tsion Mariam School in Ethiopia. It is no exaggeration to state that if not for the efforts of Saint Stephen’s College, the Tsion Mariam School would have closed years ago. Through the generous donations of our College community, we have kept the school going and supported hundreds of orphans in getting an education that they would have otherwise been denied. To ever...yone who has supported this cause over the past 18 years thank you. In collaboration with the Townsville Grammar Junior School, we are working towards providing Tsion Mariam with some new classrooms. The government has told them that their current buildings are inadequate, so without the new rooms, the school cannot continue. To date, we have raised around $32,000 towards the cost of the building, but we are slightly short of the goal, which is $40,000. I am hoping that you will be able to help us to make up the shortfall. If you are able to personally donate towards this project, you can either make a payment at the Accounts Department, or visit the online fundraising page at: https://tsionmariam-gdg-j539nb.raisely.com/. Because of our working through the Global Development Group in Australia, you are able to claim any donations on your Tax Return. Hopefully, we will receive some progress photographs so that you will be able to see the project as it comes to fruition. Tsion Mariam is currently negotiating with a contractor to begin the work immediately, so it is in faith that we are starting the project, even though we do not quite have all of the funds available to complete it. With thanks and blessings, Fr Andrew

18.01.2022 Not even a world pandemic could stop the biggest and most important day on the College annual calendar - Saint Stephen’s Day the celebration of our foundations. Even though audience numbers were tapered to fit with COVID safe plans, the excitement and enthusiasm among the students who attended was far from dampened. We celebrate Saint Stephen’s Day each year on the last day of Term Three traditionally a day of emotion, colour and reflection on who we are and includes the Sedés Honoris ceremony, Dash for Wings, Tug of War and Battle of the Bands.

18.01.2022 Senior Athletics Carnival was kicked off with enthusiastic war cries encouraging students to run, throw, jump and sprint their hardest for their House. We understand how hard it is for our parents/guardians not to be able to attend events on campus and we are looking forward to having you back to celebrate special events once COVID restrictions ease. Well done everyone and special congratulations to Haley House who won both Aggregate and Spirit Trophies.

17.01.2022 It may be school holidays but schools never sleep and it seems our College maintenance staff seem to never sleep either. The wonderful team are always working hard to ensure our school grounds look fabulous all year round!

15.01.2022 This week, a group of our female Business and Design students were given the opportunity to build skills in critical thinking and communication to empower them to be entrepreneurs, leaders and world changers in a Young Change Agents Social Entrepreneurship Program for Girls. Students formed teams to create a social start-up utilising tools and techniques used in real start-up incubators. They then pitched their concepts with a prototype to Mrs Kim Cohen, Principal of Saint S...tephen’s College, Karen Phillips, Executive Director of Queensland Women In Business, Brendan Howard, Bond Business School and Roberta Thompson, Griffith University. Judges were very impressed with the standard and the legs of the concepts pitched given the short timeframes students had to prepare. Thank you to Cat and Kieran at Young Change Agents for delivering an engaging workshop that validated the importance of Design Thinking and a Business mindset embedded within a STEAMD program. #steamdeducation #saintstephen’scollege #designeducation #enterpriseeducation #youngchangeagents

12.01.2022 Last Friday Year 6L worked with Mrs Kerrie Soars to code our Edison robots. They began with Edison Sumo Battles which the students enjoyed immensely. They then moved into using Scratch to code the Edison around a maze. Students learnt valuable lessons in persistence and perseverance throughout the maze lesson and heavily involved Maths and Technology aspects. These 21st century learning skills, enhanced with STEAM lessons, are vital for all future learning at the College.

12.01.2022 A message from Father Andrew During this year, there have been times when many thought a great darkness had befallen the world. There were times when many wondered if darkness had conquered all. But, then comes the celebration of Christmas, when Christians everywhere recall the Light coming into the world, when God took on human form and was born in Bethlehem. This is the Light of the Word made flesh, when God began His great work of redemption that started in such a humble ...way. As we again celebrate the Birth of Jesus, I pray you remember that God’s Light can never be extinguished, and there is always hope, even in the midst of the greatest of darkness.

11.01.2022 In Term Three, Year 8 students, Daniel Davies-Pryce, Tane Hobley and Marcel Kern participated in the 2020 Education Perfect STEALTH Challenge Competition which included participants in Years 8 to 12 throughout Australia and New Zealand. The team took 3rd Place for their microplastic filter, winning a $150 gift voucher. They worked through exam week and the first week of the holidays to finish their prototype design and competition entry. Here is what they had to say about... the whole experience: Our task was to design and create a robot to collect microplastics in one of the earth oceans due to the increase of plastics brought about by COVID-19 precautions. Our group came up with the idea to create a filtering canister, that filters out plastics and finer impurities using mechanical and chemical filtration. This idea was planned on paper designed in 3D Paint. With the help of the eLearning and Design and Technology Departments, we were able to create a prototype using the 3D printer at school. The team took the prototype (aka SeaBot) and filming equipment down to the lagoon and filmed a five minute video demonstrating SeaBot using lagoon water. The video demonstration was edited and submitted into the competition. Our group worked very closely with Mrs Patricia Johnson, who helped us complete the competition entry. Our group had so much fun and learnt so much!"

10.01.2022 On Friday 11 September, we celebrated Scrub Up September by wearing free dress and giving a gold coin donation to support kids in hospital. Many of our EarlyAct members from 5L, as well as Year 5 teacher Mrs Lisa Littman, were instrumental in organising this event. 5B watched a clip of twin boys, Louis and Theo who have spent most of their first year in hospital after being diagnosed with a condition where one day, they will need a kidney transplant. The class then discussed... just how lucky and healthy they all are and spent the next lesson writing 'Get Well Soon' cards to our fellow friends in hospital. Mrs Jane Howe, Director of Community Relations, will be delivering the cards to the sick children of Gold Coast University Hospital. The cards were just beautiful and we loved the heart felt messages that the students wrote. Thank you to everyone who supported this day, we raised a total of $913.55 which will help the Foundation in its endeavour to fund vital medical equipment, world-class research and interactive play and sensory areas in the hospitals.

09.01.2022 Year 5/6 STEAM-W students were busy again this term. Students designed their own systems for classifying and displaying collections of rocks and shells and designed solutions to solve problems around the campus including keeping water bottles cool, transporting heavy bags up stairs and disinfecting the surfaces of school desks. Six groups entered their projects in the Gold Coast Science Competition hosted by Griffith University. Good luck!

Unfortunately due to COVID regulations this is no longer an option. However, we are happy to announce that we will open it next year when we celebrate our 25 year anniversary. Should you require entry to the College campus during these hours, please call 5573 8600.

04.01.2022 As a College we celebrate the five Microsoft Innovative Educator Experts (MIEEs) that will join the class of 2020 - 2021, celebrating the great work we are doing in the use of technology and innovative practice that is at the heart of Saint Stephen’s College. As one of the five teachers from the College, Mr Mitchell Mills, Senior College teacher, shares what it means to him. "Due to the ever changing nature of the teaching profession, particularly this year with the transiti...on to a period of online learning, it was essential that I leveraged various technology platforms to keep my students engaged from home. To do this, I spent countless hours researching education platforms, as well as reaching out to colleagues on both a national and international scale to get an insight into ways they were incorporating technology in their practice. It is so rewarding to be recognised by such a large corporation, that is Microsoft, at an international level for the work many educators have done in ensuring their students are engaged in meaningful learning experiences. 01.01.2022 As Professor Dumbledore famously said, Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light. And the light was definitely turned on as part of Mrs Shanine Collavino’s Year 3 Book Week classroom decorations. With the mere wave of a wand, and a lot of time, patience and hard work, the room was transformed into something resembling the set of the magical book series. Truly an inspiring way to celebrate Book Week in a fun and innovative way until the very end.

01.01.2022 It was so nice to see our students interacting in the holidays playing 3 on 3 basketball, many of whom haven't been able to see or visit their family and friends in close to two years due to border restrictions. The mixed basketball competition saw three placings, the winner, the sinner, and the chicken dinner. A great day was had by everyone involved, with a very special thank you to Jennifer Wegner for organising the event.

01.01.2022 This term Year 2 have explored the VIA strength of gratitude. As part of this 2B and 2S write Christmas cards to our Australian farmers as part of Rural Aid.
