25.01.2022 Thank you to Amanda, Nevaeh, Lacey and Lanie for presenting Hanshi with a photo signed by all our students on our last junior training night. This meant so much to Hanshi!

24.01.2022 Our Student Jack Young The photo here is of our student Jack Young, Jack has been training with Sakura Ryu for about eight years now. He originally trained at a nearby Judo School before starting here in our junior class. Jack progressed all the way through the junior classes achieving his Junior Brown Belt. Unlike many students who have left us shortly after this achievement, Jack continued on. Obviously others don’t understand that what they have achieved is a competent as...sessment of that grade which is three brown Mons and awarded the Brown Belt. It is not for some time that the student finally achieves the actual components and experience for the Brown Belt level. This same assessment applies to the senior students which certainly includes the Black Belts. Jack started training in the senior class and after a time he was nominated and tested for the Yellow Cherry Blossom. This he achieved with high scores and commendations from the Joseki. Jack was nominated just last week to be tested for his Orange Cherry Blossom next Friday the 11th of September. The notice was sent out last Thursday and on Friday Jack called in after attending the hospital for x rays and having a fracture set in plaster. Jack actually fractured the 1st Metacarpal bone, there are three bones in the thumb and the Metacarpal is the one closest to the wrist. Everyone would have thought that this happened on the mat with training cranked up to full swing, no! This happened by accident riding a bicycle that locked up and threw him up and over the handle bars. His training in the Martial Arts prevented a more serious injury because as he came back towards the ground he was able to roll out using a forward roll technique that is part of the teachings of JuJItsu. We wish Jack a speedy recovery; we’ll miss his hard training on the mat during this interim period. See more

24.01.2022 Here is the date for our seniors too!

24.01.2022 Bodies in action on the mat at our Hombu Dojo! Our juniors are busy working hard with lots of sweating, exercise, practice and hit outs! Thanks to our awesome parent group for bringing your kids and supporting them from the sidelines! And remember, regular and consistent training is a must if you wish to be nominated for the upcoming grading. (Date to be announced soon)

23.01.2022 Reminder: training starts for both junior and senior students tonight from 6pm.

23.01.2022 Greetings to you all! We bring good news to confirm that we can commence classes this Monday the 25th of January. Our delay to training was brought about by the compulsory wearing of masks which has now ended. Please keep in mind that we still have to observe certain practices to be COVID-19 safe and compliant. We look forward welcoming back both junior and senior students who have the chance to don their new belt for the very first time. It’ll be great to see students continue to the standard that they displayed in our end of year gradings. See you Monday night at 6pm sharp!

23.01.2022 Best wishes and a Merry Christmas to all of our students, to their families and their friends. This year started well and then with the virus hitting home here in Australia in February, threw a spanner in the works. So with just a few weeks into the year we were shut down and in isolation. 16 weeks later we were back with the senior students only and having to maintain social distancing even so on the mat. This changed later in July and we were permitted to start with regula...r junior and senior classes under the requirements of the authorities to maintain compliance. Slowly so ever slowly we were at the very least, back! Week after week a few more students slowly returned, and we rolled along ever so slowly. Towards the years end we were at full steam ahead, pushing students a little more in readiness for the grading of firstly juniors and then the senior students. It had been way back in 2019, 12 months ago that we held our last grading. To most of our students this seemed even so much longer but the wait was worth it, as the standard of the students’ performance at the gradings was of considerable higher standard. As we celebrate this festive season, it is time to recognise the support that our club receives from so many people. The parents group is more active and involved and volunteering to help, they look after the extra chores that are part and parcel of operating a club. On top of this our senior students are more involved than any previous and look after the welfare of our club. Our experiment of encouraging the junior coloured belts to assist the newer students is paying off; when we watch the personal development, confidence and self-esteem grow. Here at Sakura Ryu, we teach the Martial Art in total and it is a lot more than kick and punch or tying on new belts, for it includes the development of teaching skills and leadership skills. You can make this easier for us by having the attendance regular and not just on occasion, here we require the commitment from both the student and the parent. We have so many people that keep in touch, whilst attending classes and many even after they move away. We have students and friends all over the world and in this vast country of Australia. Many like to visit this Facebook page which is so nice to see. We think of you all especially at this time of year when we all share in good cheer and goodwill. No one knows just quite what to expect in 2021 even with the development of a vaccine. Here at our club we are expecting all of our students to return and with an influx expected from recent enquiries we should have full classes. Until then keep safe and take care, JuJitsu Forever! Regards, Hanshi See more

23.01.2022 **FROM THE ARCHIVES: Brown to Black** This photo was back in the day, days of yesteryear when all Martial Art had the clout and respect that one expected from a true linage derived from the Japanese and their feudal system. Many changes have been made from the schools that have watered down the system over a period of time. Along with this, the shortening of the syllabus requirements have allowed too many underachievers to attain Dan ranking. We all know what the knock on eff...ect to the Martial Art is bringing with this changing. They, the under achievers then become the teachers, or so they think, they go on to form part of the Joseki who are responsible for the assessment of future Black Belts, we can just imagine their poor standards when performing this assessment. There are so many instructors out there that are very good, good because they had instruction on the martial Art from a high achiever and an exceptional hard task master. The reasons for the lowering of the standard are many, (one) is that this is a lot easier to coach to a lower level, (two) so that the person can boast that they have graded this many students to Black Belt. It is to some all about bragging of the numbers, the number of Black Belts that they have graded. So be it, having been trained by someone else from white belt, which by the way is the hardest level to teach/coach. There are fewer Martial Artists that have graded students from white to black as it is so easy to be accredited for grading many, in fact only grading from Brown to Black or from 1st Dan to higher rank. Of course the student that they grade is compliant because they want this much easier path as well. In all of this mix is the fact that no two styles are the same and also that styles do not always compliment the other. One can see at a glance if the school has the ability to effectively teach and instruct in the Martial Art and carries this with integrity, we look firstly at how fit are the students, their commitment, dedication, their character and of their capability. Here in this older photo are five Brown Belts being prepared for grading, who do you recognise, there are two Brown Belts that you all know. Do you also recognise the Black Belts in this photo? 23.01.2022 Big congratulations to one of our white belt students- Nevaeh! She won the hardest trainer award last week! Nevaeh consistently trains hard and is learning so quickly! Proud of you Nevaeh; keep up the great work!

21.01.2022 After a long and crazy year, we are excited to share the date for our upcoming junior grading. Regular attendance at training is essential for nomination.

21.01.2022 IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: Given the new restrictions in place for the next 10 days in Greater Brisbane, our return to training will now be Monday 25th of January for all students. Jujitsu would be difficult in masks and/or with social distancing, so Hanshi has made this hard but important decision. Hanshi does encourage each of you to get outside and do some fitness training in the next 10 days so you are all ready to hit the mat hard on January 25th.... Take care and stay safe!

17.01.2022 REMINDER: Training starts tonight! See you at the Dojo at 6pm.

15.01.2022 Greetings from fellow Martial Artists from around the world. Courtesy of the World Kobudo Federation. Happy New Year!

12.01.2022 A quick welcome to all those new students who have joined Sakura Ryu since our return to the Dojo. It’s great to have so many fresh white belts to work hard and teach our art to. Thanks also to those students who support and help these new white belts- we can’t do it without you! More photos and videos of our training sessions coming soon!

11.01.2022 More information about the club to share with your friends and family.

11.01.2022 From the Archives Demonstration Team For so long very little was known about the Martial Art, the military art of the Samurai was revered in old Japan and this was to be exposed to the general public here in Australia and the World. During the fifties, here in Brisbane the idea of performing demonstrations for the public was the brainchild of Kyoshi John Lee Jones of the South Brisbane Judo and JuJitsu School. (The school started by Doctor. A. J. Ross). Kyoshi John would ha...Continue reading

11.01.2022 Reminder about Junior Grading for this weekend: The Junior grading is on schedule for Saturday the 28th of November and starts at 1.00pm. The student will be required to be here 15minutes before so as to register their attendance and pay the grading fee. This will be $35.00 for Mon Grades, $45.00 for Belt Grades and $50.00 for Brown Belt. All students must bring a water bottle. Bring your own chairs and $5 to buy a raffle ticket for the chance to win some nice prizes.

10.01.2022 To all of the Dads, Wishing you a Happy Father’s Day. Here is a quote given to me many years ago. Take care, Hanshi.

10.01.2022 Congratulations to student Lacey Francis for receiving the hardest trainer award this week. This was for her work helping the lower belts. Lacey, like all our coloured belts, are often asked to support our younger, newer students. Everyone benefits from this! The higher belts learn patience and by teaching they can consolidate their own jujitsu techniques. This is part of the martial art; higher belts supporting lower belts as they were supported themselves. Well done Lacey!

10.01.2022 FROM THE ARCHIVES: Diving Forward Roll The demand for a Diving Roll over a person standing was once the expected practice as part of the requirement for Shodan, Black Belt Grading. Diving over a body standing at full height and finishing with various outcomes such as in a Forward Roll, or Kata Fall, or a Bridge, forming in part of the curriculum for a young student grading for Black Belt. Two areas for this type of rolling were required, one was for height and the other was f...or the distance or length. To be able to perform either of these manoeuvres certain principals must be understood. One was to gain distance the student must gain a certain amount of height to gain maximum distance and also take off on the one foot only, also with a good ‘run up’. Two was for maximising the height, this relies on the spring generated from the legs and is therefore both feet are used positioned in somewhat a square stance; minimum run up only is required. Over a period of time Hanshi has coached students to perform a dive roll over eleven bodies lying in formation side by side. Caution must be exercised before attempting to coach any student to perform such techniques. Considerations have to be taken into account as to the age, height, weight and the fitness of the person to be coached for this to be performed safely. See more

09.01.2022 **FROM THE ARCHIVES: LEARNING FROM THE BEST** These photos are a record of times and places and are just a small collection towards discovering the roots of our Martial Art. Our club is steep in history and proactive with ground breaking ideas, such as, inviting visitations from famous Martial Artists from across the world. Here are just three photos of some of those people, one with the Grandmaster of JuJItsu in America, Professor Wally Jay and the other with Sifu James DeMi...le, ranked Grandmaster in the art of Kung Fu. Interesting that both of these masters were friends of the legendary Bruce Lee and as you can just imagine many a story of those earlier years was eagerly listened to as they were spoken about. The third photo is of Tony Maynard, now Professor Tony Maynard. Their first visit to Australia was during the 80’s and from this invitation they visited the Brisbane Sports School. Hanshi attended seminars held by Professor Wally Jay, both there and again at the World JuJitsu Titles. Years later during the 90’s Hanshi and Heather invited Professor Wally Jay to their home for a Aussie barbecue, another photo here showing the Professor laying back in a squatters chair. Attendance with Sifu James DeMile was held at the Tallebudgera Fitness and Education Centre, and this was held over a two day ‘live in, full on,’ presentation. Many other schools were invited and did attend along with their students. With the seminar drawing to a close, formalities were in order, Hanshi was singled out as the student in attendance to impress the guest presenter and was presented in front of the masses with a book written by Sifu James DeMile and was also signed by this author, with a personal message. Such a great honour! Unfortunately Professor Wally Jay passed away several years ago and now his son Leon Jay has taken up presenting the principles of small circle JuJitsu learned from his father. Leon Jay presents regular seminars to the Martial Art groups throughout America; he has been accompanied by another presenter who Hanshi has worked with many years ago, being Tony Maynard. Professor Tony Maynard is now his correct title; he has trained the American elite forces, the Green Berets. See more

08.01.2022 ** MORE FROM THE ARCHIVES - COMPETITION ** The organizing and designing of rules for a competition of JuJitsu are hard to get the right balance, for here we have a Martial Art that can be lethal, the problem is how to demonstrate these movements skilfully and safely. Experience in competition over past decades had led Hanshi to develop a competition that scored very much akin to that of Gymnastics. That with a Uke initiating attacks with variation, speed and force for a set p...Continue reading

04.01.2022 Important notice from Hanshi Reg Ellis. Congratulations Junior Grading Nominees! Congratulations are extended to the junior students that were nominated and called at the training session last evening. Under the circumstances of COVID-19 this is the first and only grading for this year. While many students have been ready to grade for some time they had to wait for the newer student to show the Knowledge, the Skills and the Attitude that are the requirements for nomination. T...here are several students who have only recently started with us and do not have the time up that it takes to acquire the skills set for grading. We welcome all of the students and their parents along on grading day to give support to the students that are grading. This will be reciprocated when your kids are nominated and attendance is a requirement and is club policy. This day will also give everyone a look at just what is required for the various grade levels, taking into account that there will be kids of different size and age. This difference balances out when the younger kids may go through the Mon grades and the older kids may go directly through the belt grades. No doubt on the day you will feel the family friendly atmosphere and see the professionalism that is Sakura Ryu JuJItsu, you will also see the kids with ability that stacks up to their grade level. The grading is on schedule for Saturday the 28th of November and starts at 1.00pm. The student will be required to be here 15minutes before so as to register their attendance and pay the grading fee. This will be $35.00 for Mon Grades, $45.00 for Belt Grades and $50.00 for Brown Belt. All students must bring a water bottle. Several families have contributed to the prizes for the Raffles that will be held on this day and the day of the Senior Grading, 19th of December. Thank you to everyone who has contributed and who intends to contribute. Tickets on the day will be three for $5.00. The last class held in 2020 for our junior students will be the Friday the 4th of December and the return class for 2021 will be Monday the 18th of January for juniors and the 11th for Seniors. Finishing a little earlier this year provides us with the opportunity to focus on the senior group as they approach their grading. All are welcome to arrive at the conclusion of this grading to congratulate our students success, Amanda will be one of these students. Finally we take the opportunity to wish all of our student’s, family and friends all the very best for the Christmas period and a Happy return in the New Year to reap the positive essentials in life that run parallel to one’s formal education. 04.01.2022 Club News Students attending class last Monday were obviously inspired by the early release of nominations for the end of year grading. They poured in onto the mat with renewed enthusiasm leaving no spare room at all for any more. The saying that ‘the more the merrier’ held true for this class as the hit outs and self-motivation was outstanding. The junior Brown Belts performed a standard of JuJitsu beyond their years and had equalled the best of by gone years. Wednesday clas...s produced the same results with the junior class, another packed mat with everyone giving their best. The senior class followed in pursuit of the juniors, this class being the largest in numbers for many years and also inspired by the release of their nominations. With fourteen students nominated, we look forward to a new beginning and a rebuild of our senior classes. Everyone day was made complete with the return of our popular student Caroline who always digs deep to produce a quality training session. A special welcome to another Rowan family is in order and adds to the numbers and the quality of the personnel that is Sakura Ryu. See more
