04.01.2022 It’s always interesting to know where your money is really going, right? Most of the recognisable makeup and beauty brands that you will find in stores are actually owned by larger parent companies, such as Shiseido, Estée Lauder and L’Oréal. Even what you might consider boutique brands have systematically been bought by bigger companies. A good breakdown of who owns what: https://www.insider.com/companies-beauty-brands-connected-2... Now I’m not just saying this in a damn the man respect, but one thing to note is that these companies buy smaller, successful brands, and often take them to new markets. Like China, where animal testing on beauty products is still mandatory. Unfortunately, money talks, and with a population of 2 billion, that’s a lot of clams the Chinese market can generate. It’s a very layered issue... some parent companies recognise the brand’s cult following stay loyal due to its cruelty-free status, so they keep it out of China. That’s great, but your dollar is ultimately still benefiting the parent company that contributes to testing on animals. Take Too Faced as an example. They were bought by Estée Lauder. There are two ways to look at this: if you stop buying Too Faced you won’t line the pockets of Estée Lauder. Or... If you continue to buy Too Faced, you’re showing Estée Lauder that you want to buy cruelty free and they don’t need to chase the Chinese market, because they have enough loyal customers regardless. It’s a personal choice, but it’s great to be informed. Let me know if you’d like me to give you a list of fabulous cruelty free brands, as I’ve made the commitment for several years now to only stock my makeup kit with cruelty free products. Happy Wednesday!
