25.01.2022 Weve got one spot left at the North Fremantle workshop. If youve been sitting thinking about starting a business or just want some extra space I cant stress how great this opportunity is. I left my job 5 years ago and threw myself into this creative adventure. If it wasnt for Many project and the wealth of knowledge from the people around me I dont think I would be where I am now. I feel so lucky to be working here with 12+ furniture makers and a couple of metal workers. Everyday we all lean on each other, theres always someone around to lend a hand or give you advice to help you out with your projects. 25.01.2022 Almost at the end of the install for this bookcase. Should be back on site next week to finish assembling and fitting scribe panels. Some work needs to be carried out on the windows before I can finally fit it as access is tricky once its installed. Massive thanks to @_andrewchristie_ @dannyjoncoutts @hov_dal for helping with fitting this all together on site. 23.01.2022 Just completed this project for a lovely couple in Freo. Good way to make use of the space between the fireplaces. In typical Freo house style none of the walls were square and there was some tricky scribing involved. These are going to be finished in situ by a professional painter.

22.01.2022 The scale of this project is really started to take shape. All the pieces are glued up, just lined up the lower shelves to get a sense of the size. 22.01.2022 Current project. American white Oak L shaped bookcase. Consisting of 6 shelves that are supported between 564 dowels. Longest side is 9m, smaller is 4.4m and its 3m high. Here you see me using a straight edge jig to plot and cut the almost 1200 holes.

22.01.2022 The only times youll see a furniture maker stressed is during a glue up! These ones are pretty testing thats for sure! 32 dowels and 64 dominos to line up before the glue goes off. 19.01.2022 I saw a tip (no pun intented) by @ramonartful on instagram and had to share it. This block is super handy when putting a straight edge on boards so you take off the minimum waste needed. Its easy to line the front of the board up with the blade, but before I saw this I always used to measure the end or just do it by feel. 18.01.2022 Glue ups are well under way on this monster bookcase build. The bookcase is L shapes and consists of a long edge set back from a glass window which is 9m long and 3m high, the other edge is 4.4m long. It has 6 shelves which are supported by 678 dowels. 15.01.2022 Solid American white Oak vanity finished with Osmo oil. This was installed a few weeks ago for a lovely couple in Fremantle. Love the contrast of the basin supplied by @concretestudio_ This is 1200x600 and with the weight of the basin it requires some custom brackets to secure it safely to the wall, brackets made by @anuuk_bes

15.01.2022 For this project I decided to give the new Festool Australia domino quick connectors a go. I carried out a pretty extreme test to see how they would perform. I placed 4kg weights 200mm from the join. The first test wasnt that successful, the joint opened up pretty quickly. I then epoxied the connector in and tightened it while wet, let it dry over night and tried again the next day. You can see the joint hardly opened up. I know in practice this isnt the kind of load these ...are designed for, but for piece of mind and longevity of the furniture it makes me feel confident that they will last. The connectors work by opening up when you screw them in, the particle board core is pretty soft and I could see over time without the epoxy it could become loose. Something to bear in mind if using these in this application, I wouldnt expect this to happen with solid timber or mdf core. #festool #domino #oak #bookshelf #furnituremaker #craftsman @ Saltwood Designs See more

15.01.2022 Someone messaged and asked how I set this up. Its a pretty simple router sled made by @_andrewchristie_ which he used for surfacing small slabs. I fixed a couple of rails to the underside of the table and borrowed a router off @palletico which is all setup with a surfacing bit. This table is having a sculpted aluminium base which is being built by @alume_studio and this plate is the fixing for the top. I actually made a mistake the first time I routed it out, the router twisted in the sled when trimming the edges and made it wider than needed, luckily the plate needed to be wider anyway so it all worked out well!

12.01.2022 Here it is, coffee table back in its happy place. I originally finished it with Danish oil, which was fine, but for me it was a bit too glossy and yellowing. The Osmo finish is more satin and feels silky smooth to touch.

11.01.2022 @markhunter3322 New 2.9m x 900mm Marri desk. The top and sides are only 30mm thick so had to employ the skills of Mike from @alume_studio to design and fabricate a frame that will make this work. This thing is now very solid, the legs are held into the frame by some angle and the bottoms of the legs have a grove cut in them which ties it all together. It comes apart into 4 pieces so is relatively easy to move and reassemble. #design #fabrication #furnituremaker #marri #desk #fremantle #freo #perth

08.01.2022 I made this coffee table about 6 years ago in my backyard with just a few tools. It wasnt perfect but I did the best with what I had. Im cutting back all the old finish, sanding it flat (properly this time) and giving it some new life with a fresh coat of Osmo. Its quite humbling reflecting on where you were and where its taken you. 07.01.2022 Fitting a lower shelf to the desk frame. Quite a bit to take in to consideration before making any cuts. Avoiding cutting where there are defects in the timber so as to keep the edges looking clean, also trying to remember where dominos are! The shelf is also being shaped into the legs which are tapered so there will be a bit of figuring out distances at the final height it will be.

06.01.2022 Today was a pretty special day. The big reveal of a project thats been over a month in the making, so privileged to have been asked to make the timber details for this piece. Thank you to Mike Hartman @alume_studio for getting me on board, and such an honour to work with the Artist Peter Farmer @peterfarmerart2 This piece is called Maajit Bardook its a sculptural art bench seat which is in the new Woodside building in Perth.
