Teenager Workout Day... Sounds a bit odd, right? Well, according to a recent study, 9 in 10 Aussie teens don't get enough exercise.... Exercise is important for everyone, but especially for those living with diabetes as it helps: Insulin to work better; ultimately improving your diabetes management; maintain a healthy weight; lower your blood pressure; reduce your risk of heart disease; and reduce stress. 20.01.2022 Over the next decade, more than half a million Aussie mums are expected to be diagnosed with gestational diabetes. But what's actually causing this? There are a bunch of reasons for this: Australia's increasing diversity, the age of women falling pregnant, and lifestyle factors. Whilst some of these factors can't be controlled, there are still some ways to reduce the risk of developing GDM.... Diabetes Australia has worked with key stakeholders to develop a robust Position Statement outlining key issues surrounding GDM and what needs to be done. Check it out here: https://static.diabetesaustralia.com.au//d19303da-e42c-49a

16.01.2022 Okay so I’m sure your social media feeds are filled with yellow tiles accompanied by the words ‘R U OK?’ Although it may seem repetitive, take a second to think about how many times someone needs to ask you how you’re feeling before you’re totally honest with them? R U OK? ... Yeah, I’m fine. Are you sure? Yeah dude, I’m good. Okay, you just seem a little off today, you know you can talk to me anytime, right? Thanks, appreciate it. Okay, so not a particularly groundbreaking conversation, but pretty realistic stuff right? Chances are, initially people aren’t going to be totally upfront and honest with you. When asking R U Ok? remember to create a safe space where people can feel comfortable talking to you either in the moment or at another time. There are a heap of resources out there, check out the RUOK website and always remember, we’re here for you in any way we can be.

14.01.2022 2 weeks on since RUOK day and it's got us thinking... We often seek psychological support in response to feeling negative emotions, but what about proactively seeking this sort of care? This doesn't necessarily need to look like weekly appointments booked in with a clinical psychologist. It could be as simple as opening up to someone close, having a deep and meaningful discussion about how you're feeling, or perhaps it could take the form of simply keeping a journal.... We know it can be easier said than done, so start small - perhaps a daily walk? 07.01.2022 Happy World Mental Health Day! By now, you’ve probably noticed that mental wellness is super important to us at MyDiabetes. That said, it’s pretty easy to publish a Facebook post here and an e-news article there, they’re just words after all. What’s important is the action! ... That’s why the team at MyDiabetes has committed to finding 10 minutes out of each weekday to meditate. We’ve been doing this for about a fortnight now and we can honestly say we’ve never felt better. Sure, we miss a couple of days here and there, can still feel down sometimes, and certainly aren’t perfect at it but overall, it’s been a great experience. This is why we’ve decided to launch Mindfulness Monday, a segment we’re introducing that challenges you to commit to one small action for your mind each week. We invite you guys, the MyDiabetes community to get your minds active! Keep an eye out on Mondays for each week’s challenge and see what small actions you can take to improve your mental wellness! See you there

06.01.2022 Diabetes Australia is one of Australia’s leading funders of diabetes research. Earlier this month, DA announced the funding for 13 diabetes research projects across a broad spectrum. One recent ground-breaking study has found a super cool protein in a kidney cell that could be involved in the ‘signaling’ process that leads to kidney scarring in people with diabetes.... The hope is that blocking this special protein could prevent kidney damage in the first place, and help to prevent kidney disease altogether! Other studies include: - Improving pregnancy outcomes for women with type 1 diabetes - The improved use of technology in children with type 1 diabetes - The impact of low kilojoule diets on type 2 diabetes management - Using physical activity to treat diabetes-related liver disease Check out the awesome full range of research programs being funded! www.diabetesaustralia.com.au/diabetes-australia-research-pr

06.01.2022 Pumpalicious! Okay, so there's nothing particularly delicious about an insulin pump, however, it can defs make managing your diabetes considerably easier! But with so many options out there, coupled with rapidly changing technology, it can be confusing and confronting - firstly deciding on whether to go down the pump path and then of course choosing the right one for you. ... I'm sure you've heard pumps are great, but what actually makes them so great? Pumps can: - Automatically adjust your basal background insulin every 5 minutes based on your CGM readings. - Help keep your sugar levels in your target range to avoid - those pesky lows and rebound highs. - Conveniently restart insulin automatically when your levels recover without the annoying alerts. For a little more info, check out this simple video that outlines the awesome new tech that many new pumps are starting to use. We recognize there is no silver bullet for this stuff, as everyone has different needs. At MyDiabetes, our goal is to provide tailored diabetes care and management that removes all the confusion and fuss that often comes with managing your diabetes. Check-in with Sam to discuss all things pumps, today! www.youtube.com/watch
