24.01.2022 In this video, Kylie and Steve take us on a tour of their DIY chicken coop. They talk through what they like about their design, as well as a few things they would change if they built another chicken coop again. The layout is huge but because they have integrated it so well with the rest of the garden, it is hard to tell there is even a chicken coop in their garden when you first arrive. They explain some of the reasons for choosing its location and what they planted around it too to get the most out of the natural fertiliser that flows from the chicken coop when it rains.

20.01.2022 Time to tell you about this fortnights edible garden because -- unbelievably -- its already been two weeks since we started spruiking our last one. See how Christine and David accommodated a food forest, vegie & herb beds, edible boundary gardens, and chicken run on their 1+-acre Glass House Mountains block, all while retaining a sizeable lawn and incorporating an enviable composting set-up. But wait, theres more! David also showed us how his repurposing, salvaging and ingenuity has paid off and resulted in a homemade biochar furnace (!!) and fridge-sized solar-powered food dehydrator (wow!). You wont want to miss this segment so if you can, make yourself and your dad a cuppa and view it together, conveniently screening on Fathers Day, 9.30am Sunday 6 September.

Minimise overlooking "ready to pick" fruits, by situating them where you will see them each and every day.

Tune in for heaps of useful gardening info and to check out what's growing well there right now. Remember to ask any questions in the comments for a live response. This will be followed at 10am by how Third Ground Coffee House deals with their spent coffee grounds in a way that not only serves -- but also seeks to ...educate -- the local community (ThirdGround Backyard). Don't go away though, because at 10.30am you can get ideas on harnessing (figuratively speaking) black soldier flies to break down your food scraps in to beautiful compost, or to supplement your chickens' diet. Yum! Fix yourself a quick cuppa, then we're back again at 11am, this time in Mandy's kitchen to learn about making sourdough bread, and how fermentation works. And as always, you can catch up on (or rewatch) any of our previous videos right here on Facebook or on our YouTube channel, Samford Edible Garden Trail. See more

13.01.2022 THANK YOU. From the bottom of our hearts. It is impossible to name all the names and to capture in words or pictures the full scope of happiness for our first live OPEN DAY for the Samford Edible Garden Trail in our beautiful community and the stunning Samford Valley which was in its autumn splendour on Sunday. A highlight was the beaming faces of those gardening enthusiasts who were lucky enough to score a ticket before we sold out, and especially the little ones who lit up ...with seeing their hero, Costa. We watched as Costa took the time to make each child feel special and inspired... We think it's gnome-dust that really added that extra special touch of magic that lit us all up! And...HOW BEAUTIFUL WERE THE GARDENS? Everyone who crossed our path while filming and driving Costa around had SO much enthusiasm for what they had learnt, and our truly generous garden hosts were elevated to Garden Educators, their accumulated experience and wisdom much appreciated. Thanks to Millen Farm & The Mini Farm Project. We thank once again, Samford and Districts Progress and Protection Association Inc, and our sponsor, the Bendigo Community Bank-Samford & Brendale (Community Bank Samford). Thank you to ALL the local businesses who supported us, it really does take a village, and what a wonderful one we have! Lastly, but most importantly, there are many moving pieces behind each successful project, and at the core, there are a team of volunteers, silently working away to ensure each piece works as best as it can. Thank you to our very humble gracious leader, Susanne Engelhard, and her amazing team who managed to think of just about everything for their very first Open Day, and are still busy going through your feedback forms to see how they can improve next year's one! Don't forget: We still will be recording garden visits around the Valley area, so, if you have an edible garden you think would help others to learn more about gardening too, get in touch with us, we would love to pay a visit! We are on YouTube, Instagram and Facebook. www.samfordediblegardentrail.com.au

13.01.2022 In this video, Trent shows us how he has repurposed old water tanks and a couple of spas to made some really cool looking raised garden beds. They are the perfect height, look fantastic, and saved a whole lot of waste from going to the tip.

13.01.2022 Sustainable Horticulture in Darra!

12.01.2022 At Kerry, an hour-and-a-quarter south of Brisbane CBD, is a food gardening paradise called Tullamore Farm. Owners Bill and Carol manage to grow a staggering 98% (not a typo!!) of their fruit and veg intake here, in amongst the bush. Tune in on Sunday at 9.30am for your fortnightly dose of inspiration. We'll show you around and share with you their strategies for: * taking some of the hard work out of gardening; * storing abundant produce for later consumption; and * how to maximise output by companion planting.

11.01.2022 As you know, the edible garden tour of Mary-Ann and Colin from Dayboro will be posted up with live commentary at 9.30 this morning. Just before that, at 9am, we are being interviewed by Costa about our experiences with the trail (it will finish at 9.25am! ready for the garden tour). If you are free at 9am, please join in the chat (via his page) and post up a comment about what you liked about the Trail, or any suggestions that you have for us to improve it, or if you have an edible garden you would like us to visit!

Don't forget, you can catch up on any of our previous videos right here on Facebook or on our YouTube channel, Samford Edible Garden Trail.

09.01.2022 In this video we focus on one corner of Johns backyard edible garden where he has built a fishpond as part of his integrated aquaponics system. He located it here because this was previously a boggy corner of the garden, and nothing much grew here. Now he has a place to grow out his fish, as well as feed the surrounding fruit trees with nutrients from the pond. He talks us through how he planned the drainage, the design of the fishpond, and the fruit trees as all part of an integrated aquaponics system.

06.01.2022 In this video we focus on one really interesting tree that Trent is growing in his backyard. And that is the Malabar Chestnut. His tree is about 7 years old and produces edible nuts. We decided they taste a bit like a cross between a macadamia and a cashew. Delicious! You can also eat the leaves and the fruit of this tree.

04.01.2022 Have you been wondering how aquaponics differs from hydroponics? Unsure how to make a boggy part of your yard useable? This fortnights featured gardener reached out to the SEGT team early in our May 2020 trail offering to show us his unique garden set-up. Situated in Darra (roughly 45 minutes away), John Hays garden is a perfect fit for one of our on-going road trip/on-the-road segments. Tour Johns garden with us at 9.30am on Sunday 26 July and type any questions you have for him in the comments to receive an answer.

You have won a $20 gift voucher from Daleys Fruit Tree Nursery ... We'd love to see pics and hear about what you decided to plant in your garden!

02.01.2022 Successfully growing your own fruit & veg takes more than just hard work and simply wanting to. It requires forward planning, routines around plant & garden maintenance, and flexibility & innovation to ensure you maximise all of your cherished harvest (including out of season). Tullamore Farm's Bill and Carol took the time to plan for success with succession planting from the outset, but their system can be adopted any time -- even if you already have a food garden -- if you are looking to garden in a more structured way.

02.01.2022 We had a glitch with the main garden tour video this morning. It has stopped at 4mins, but rest assured there is more! We are reloading it, please check in later today as it might take a while to reload it. At 9.45, the two shorter videos are coming up so hang tight for those! David shows us his DIY biochar furnace, and his solar dehydrator.

02.01.2022 Are you wanting to make your own Native Bee Hive? In this video Steve shows you a simple design he has come up with for a DIY native been hive, and it includes an insulated cover he has made from recycled Styrofoam. We think the cover looks pretty funky, but it is also very functional as it protects the native bees from high temperatures. And judging by how many native bees there were buzzing around this hive, they seem to like it too!

02.01.2022 As if Mary-Ann and Cols orchard wasnt enough to have us all green with envy, join us as we walk up their fruit tree-lined driveway and discover the edibles planted on either side. Minimise overlooking "ready to pick" fruits, by situating them where you will see them each and every day.

02.01.2022 In this video, join us as John takes us on a tour of his DIY aquaponics system. He shows us how he has set it up to use it to water a vertical garden where he is growing seedlings and microgreens. He then shows us the three stages to his system, and how he has integrated the aquaponics system into his suburban edible garden.

01.01.2022 This is such a simple and quick way to make compost at home when you are living in a suburban backyard. Steves suburban backyard is bursting with edible food, and his soil is amazing. We asked him what he is doing to get such amazing soil and he said, compost! In this video Steve shows us his technique where he uses three compost bins in a rotating system so he always has compost available to add to his raised garden beds. He demonstrates how to build a compost bin in just minutes by adding in easy to find garden waste and horse manure that he buys for a couple of dollars from a local charity. It only takes about a month for a compost bin to be ready to add to his garden.

01.01.2022 Our livestream will be at 11.30am. Fixed the glitch with our streaming software! Our livestream will be at 11.30am. Fixed the glitch with our streaming software!

01.01.2022 Entomology: [noun] the branch of zoology dealing with insects. How does this relate to gardening, you ask? Find out on Sunday when we bring you our next segment. It features Albany Creek-based entomologist Bernie and his wife Dawn in their suburban insect and butterfly garden. There *may* even be the opportunity to submit photos of critters you've stumbled upon, but have been unable to classify as beneficial, pesky or aesthetically challenged (aka good, bad or ugly). 9.30am on Sunday Brisbane time -- see you then!
