24.01.2022 A great opportunity for those using AAC out there!
24.01.2022 Hey any family’s who have a yellow ladybug, I strongly recommend you watch The Queens Gambit on Netflix. Now be warned, there are some adult themes in this one, and I’m not for stereotyping ASD with extreme giftedness. But the acting in this is STUNNING. I’m three episodes deep and I am seeing so many classic ways ASD presents in girls. Someone has done their homework
23.01.2022 Anyone feeling like holding a family briefing like this in iso?
23.01.2022 Hey all, just a reminder that we are back to face-to-face sessions as of TOMORROW! Remember zoom is still available if you are sick or unable to make it in person. We will still be following all our COVID19 procedures!
22.01.2022 Guys! The NIDS have given blanket approval for the purchase of Smart Devices (such as iPads) and other low-risk Assistive Technology (including basic exercise equipment) for participants for the purpose of accessing telehealth services during the COVID-19 pandemic. A few rules though: - It has to be done with Core - Consumables budget (if you don't have funds in consumables apparently you should see some appear by 9th May 2020) - It must be the base model (i.e. basic iPad not... iPad Pro or have the 4G capability) - You need a letter from your provider to support its purchase (mainly for audit purposes) - Spend up to $1500 (or up to $750 for electronic devices) Check out their webpage about it via this link! https://www.ndis.gov.au//participants-co/using-your-budget
22.01.2022 Love this, a great reminder!
21.01.2022 This first hand explanation on ADHD is sooooo good!
21.01.2022 Wow so interesting! Of course in Early Intervention we use praise a lot, gives kids that nice oxytocin cocktail which makes them more likely to persist and to work at that skill. But could it be working against us? Whats your thoughts?
21.01.2022 Hey everyone! I would love to hear from everyone who is currently using the services of a Therapy Assistant on the coast here! Who are you using and what do you like best about them? I have a few clients with ASD who we are trying to set up home-based Early Intervention Therapy Assistant sessions with but we don't have many T.A.s to work with!
21.01.2022 Great info about COVID 19 and anxiety for people living with Autism!
19.01.2022 Chatterboxes is hiring an admin assistant everyone!
19.01.2022 As everyone has heard, we have another covid lockdown *sigh* for the rest of the working week. As OT and Allied health disciplines are considered an essential services, our clinic and our TASC program (the Therapy Assistants) will be running as normal, however with increased use of PPE. A few points for the next few days: 1. You are allowed to leave the house for your child’s session with an allied health provider being held at the clinic. 2. If you would prefer to change you...r session to a Telehealth session please notify us in advance. 3. If you or your child are sick or have visited a hotspot recently, please let us know so we can cancel your session. 4. If you have a mobile OT session or a TA session being held at your home, you can choose if that session goes ahead as planned or if you prefer to cancel it. 5. Please do whatever you need to to survive this school holiday lockdown period! https://www.qld.gov.au//public-/restrictions-in-qld-update
17.01.2022 Here is a little social story to prepare your kids on what to expect at their next OT session. Our clinic is just a little bit different now so we want it to feel as familiar and predictable as possible before they come! Thanks to our wonderful receptionists Evie and Madi for putting these together for us.

13.01.2022 Hey all! Just a heads up we have a new Admin phone number - 0401 420 428. Please use this number for all booking related issues including cancellations for our sessions or TA sessions, feel free to continue to send me texts or calls but as you have all discovered I can be hard to get a reply from sometimes (I have 45+ unread text messages on my phone at this moment)! Our new administration assistant will man the admin phone when they start so it might be quicker to get a response from them when you really need something quick! https://tenor.com//goldbergs-phone-answer-the-phone-gif-15
12.01.2022 Wonderful initiative!
12.01.2022 Our apartment has an open floor plan. Shortly after we moved here in 2019, we installed this long gate to prevent Foxy from accessing the kitchen on his own, be...cause we couldn’t (and still cannot) modify every aspect of the kitchen space for safety. A few months ago, Foxy learned to scale the gate. He’s super strong and agile, and he grew taller, and well, here we are. It’s been a challenge. It’s also been a good opportunity to spend more time in the kitchen with Foxy, which he enjoys. One of his speech therapists observed this gate-climbing during several sessions in our home. She’s amazing and beloved and comes up with strategies that align so well with our values. Yesterday, when I was checking in at the end of her and Foxy’s session, she showed me that she had stuck one of Foxy’s Talking Brix to the gate. Talking Brix have one large button to play a recorded single message. This one, when I pressed it, said, Go in in the voice we use for Foxy’s talker. I told her I thought it was great and asked how we could model its use. She told me we could press it when Foxy was climbing the gate to show him another way to communicate he wanted to go into the kitchen. Sweet, sounds easy. She also told me we could model it when we were inviting Foxy into the kitchen. Inside my head I scoffed, not able to imagine us choosing more Foxy kitchen supervision than we were already doing with this gate-climbing. But I just nodded and smiled. * Yesterday evening, Foxy pressed the button himself. I’m not sure if he was intentionally requesting to enter the kitchen, or just pressing the cool button to see what would happen, and it doesn’t matter. I immediately hopped up, opened the door to the gate, and asked Foxy if he wanted to GO IN the kitchen. He seemed a little in awe as he walked through the opening in the gate instead of scrambling over it, and then he began to delightedly jump and flap his way around the kitchen. It hit me. He had been waiting to be invited. He had been waiting for us to open the door for him. He had been waiting to be included, not just tolerated. And in that moment, the Talking Brix button wasn’t a communication support for him. It was a communication support for me. I was the one not getting the message. I was the one who needed another mode. I was the one with the receptive difficulties. Foxy’s expression had been clear and consistant the whole time: Let me in. * What would it be like to have receptive language goals for the people communicating with, caring for, educating, playing with, and supporting AAC users? [image is a photo taken inside our apartment, looking into our kitchen. The background contains an island and some stools. The foreground shows part of a black fence-like gate preventing entrance to kitchen. On the gate is a Talking Brix, which is a white square of plastic about the size of a person’s palm with a green button in the center.]
