23.01.2022 Hi, I am Allan the Butcher and back in 2006 i first went to Nepal and did the Everest Base Camp Trek with my Son. Wow what a great country, visually the Himal...ayas are unable to be described with words, they are huge and really impressed me, but something else that impressed me was the warmth of the people. This was the first time that I have travelled in a truly poor country, I had travelled some of Asia and the Pacific Islands but nothing on this scale. The depth of poverty was something that was now imprinted on my mind, almost more powerful than the magical mountains of the Himalayas, the backbone and roof of the world. Once arriving back home to Sydney and working in my Butcher Shop in Turramurra on Sydney’s leafy North Shore I just couldn`t stop thinking about the plight of the people, women and children in Nepal. I toyed with several ideas but education seemed to be the longer term answer that would be of most benefit in the coming years. Luckily I partnered with Prem K Khatry who now owns Ace the Himalaya Trekking company. Many ideas ran through my mind as we settled on a little school in Ratmate Village near Gorkha, Bhairabi Primany School to start the Nepal School Project. This school was a tiny mud and stone building and at the time was down to only eight students, within weeks of our proposal to help the school numbers jumped to 38 small, dirty, poor children who’s parents were hoping for a chance to educate their children. Now we had started we needed a way to keep funds flowing so I toyed with many ideas until I decided to let Dog Bones Fund a School. Simply instead of charging people for bones I let people put in a gold coin donation letting them know this was being donated to Nepal. Little did I know at the time the following I would get and over the next 14 years I raised $139,000 AU just from bones, it was amazing. From here the project just grew legs and moved forward with many people getting involved to help make a big difference in Nepal. My partner in Nepal, Prem K Khatry would also donate a percentage of his profits direct to the project and his staff had to spend time each week working on the Fund. Still to this day we get 100% of the money to the project, the only exception is a small Nepal government charge by the Social Welfare Council to approve, oversea and safeguard the project to avoid corruption and money going missing. Unlike other projects we don’t have administration fees, and rather then budgets we do projects. Today we have teacher training projects annually, University groups visit often, school equipment and computers in recent years and toilets and new homes since the earthquake in 2015. We try to make all products in Nepal and work is carried out by the Nepalese at normal daily rates. This is their school, their project, we just fund it. Current Goal.. My focus over the last decade or more is women and girls health and hygiene. Currently I am working on Personal Hygiene Pad Packs for girls and women, including female teachers. Up to now they all miss 5 or more days a month missing out on 25% of their education. My aim at this point is 5,000 packs this year, they are washable, reusable, sustainable and environmentally friendly with no wash or rubbish and last about 3 years. This will cost around $66,000 AU. These are all made locally in Nepal, creating paid employment for women. Previous to this we have built 5 toilets in schools of up to 400 students that previously had no toilets. I no longer own the butcher shop and have just returned from Nepal were I travelled with my daughter for her third trip, she is now a Registered Nurse and is also very passionate about Nepal.
