25.01.2022 "Working through crisis is a normal part of nursing and midwifery, however, the ongoing unprecedented events of COVID-19 are far from normal. Being able to manage stress and look after ourselves is going to be critical. " It was a pleasure to again join Deputy Director & Registered Nurse Mark Aitken from Nurse & Midwife Support in this podcast to discuss the importance of acknowledging emotional and physical responses to stress and what strategies health care professionals ca...n use to reduce it and boost wellbeing. Do you know a nurse, midwife or other health care professional who would benefit from 30 mins of self-care? Nurse & Midwife Support is a free 24/7 national support service for nurses & midwives providing access to confidential advice and referral.

18.01.2022 Unconscious behaviour and your stress temperature. I use the conscious/unconscious continuum to help organisations and clients bring understanding to poor behaviour. After all, we ALL go into RED at times, but labels can be triggering and can often get in the way of change. Labels also don't offer insights as to why we behave the way we do.... The closer we are to RED, the higher our stress levels are. We are in survival and old programs kick in. We go unconscious. It's a state of fear and we look out for danger which is why we are primed to judge, blame and react. The closer we are to GREEN, thinking slows and our stress response is calm. We are open, aware and present. We are in a state of growth and repair so feelings of passion, love, connection, innovation and creativity are able to come to the surface. As a first step, we need to regularly check-in with our stress temperature. We need to bring self-awareness to when being busy in YELLOW, starts to move into RED.

18.01.2022 Conscious not cautious. Present not paranoid. Aware not anxious.... We have been in a state of hyper-vigilance for 6 months. Checking ourselves as we leave the house, avoiding close contact, worrying about loved ones and having our movements restricted. This takes its toll. Being overly cautious puts us on high alert. Our nervous system is under pressure as our stress temperature spikes due to the evolving and changing nature of Covid-19. Over time we feel the impact on our mental and physical health. While we can't control our environment, it is possible to move from a cautious state of hyper-vigilance to a calm state of conscious awareness. Being conscious means we are fully present in the moment. We are aware of those around us, what information we consume and what we need to get done. But as we navigate the world our nervous system is calm and we don't worry excessively about problems or ruminate over the "what ifs". We pause to connect with others and we take time to look after our wellbeing. We don't take action through gritted teeth but in a state of calm acceptance. Mindfulness meditation is a great place to start. Here is a 13 minute guided exercise: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AM4TkupsRE

15.01.2022 "It doesn't make sense to sit and work your life away. When there's no time for play your days feels awful grey..." "You've got to have fun...go for a run...just take a walk in the sun!" #bringbacknorm... In 1975 the Life Be In It campaign was launched by the Victorian Government to inspire us to get moving and work less. It then went national. We knew back then the health risks weight gain and obesity posed. But we didn't listen. It is now estimated that 67% of adults and 25% of children are overweight or obese in Australia (ABS/Department of Health figures). Weight gain leaves us more vulnerable to all illness and disease, yet we get heavier and heavier. And we now know that mental health and mindset are key to our physical health. In this article, I make the case for why we need to bring back Norm and friends to get our minds and bodies moving and reduce our national Stress Temperature. We need to get excited and inspired to boost our overall health and wellbeing and make ourselves truly resilient as a population. What do you think it will take to reinspire a nation? #health #mentalhealth #obesity #lifebeinit #wellbeing https://www.linkedin.com//life-time-get-mind-body-moving/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ged74M6Qw2o&feature=emb_logo

11.01.2022 Providing care for people living with Dementia can be rewarding but also brings with it higher risks of burnout. Witnessing cognitive decline, difficult behaviour changes, the distress of family and other loved ones can be highly stressful. And with COVID-19 restrictions, such as reduced visitors to aged care facilities, stress for many is building.... That is why I am so happy to be presenting to Dementia Care professionals and service providers on the importance of Self-care and how to build Resilience in uncertain times. This is a free offering from Dementia Training Australia funded by the Australian Government. Please register via the link below. As I prepare for the session, I would love to understand your experience of the Dementia Care environment and any impacts you have experienced for family and loved ones?

11.01.2022 Break the worry cycle This is one of the most debilitating loops to experience when in a state of anxiety or stress. The inability to stop anxious thinking and worrying thoughts go to the heart of many mental health issues. And we can all relate to waking up at 3am locked into a worry loop about work, family, money or other issues.... That's why in part 2 of my Employee Resilience Webinar Series I show people how to break this debilitating cycle: + False truths: understand why all worrying thoughts seem 'true' in the heat of the moment + Worry fuel: realise how physical stress symptoms provide fuel for negative thinking + Resistance paradox: how when we resist, tense and fight against our thoughts we stay in the unconscious loop + Body relaxation: how our body can be the key to taking the conscious pathway to break the cycle This is a powerful process but it requires learning and practice to build new neural pathways that divert thoughts down the new conscious pathway for a calm mind. As the mental health of Australians, especially in Victoria, takes a hit with ongoing restrictions, this work is more important than ever. #mentalhealth #wellbeing #resilience #psychology #anxiety
