25.01.2022 It’s nearly NAIDOC Week! This year’s theme, Always Was, Always Will Be, recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for our country for over 65,000 years. There are plenty of ways to celebrate NAIDOC Week this year. We've compiled a list of just some of the events and activities going on...

24.01.2022 Congratulations to the Traditional Owners who were given the Deeds of Title to the Gagaguwaja Aboriginal Land Trust for a small parcel of land near Tennant Creek. The land claim was lodged in 1983, meaning many of the Traditional Owners who started the work are no longer here to see the settlement. "It's very important because there is a sacred site in that waterhole. Everything is all there. When we go back we feel happy and the people that passed away, they get happy when we're back home," said the Northern Land Council's Jack Green.

24.01.2022 Research led by University of South Australia PhD candidate Katharine McBride (left) has found what makes the heart strong for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for Aboriginal women and McBride’s study explains what changes are needed to meet the 2031 Closing the Gap target. Anna Dowling (right), a Yamatji Badimia woman and Research Assistant at South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute, is a member ...of the advisory group who worked on the study. The advisory group agreed that Aboriginal women’s voices need to be prioritised to understand what protects the heart and puts it at risk. 24.01.2022 Congratulations to Archie Roach who last week took out the Double J Australian artist of the year award! "Something like this means a lot to me. Because I've been doing it for a while playing music professionally and recording and just to be recognised at all for what you do, it means you're still contributing to society through your music. "To remain relevant is a good thing, that's for sure. I wasn't expecting it. You never expect any sort of awards or winning anything like that. You just hope that, what you do, people like it and see it as a positive thing. It keeps you going and gives me the idea that I must be doing something right." - Archie Roach.

23.01.2022 Congratulations to Archie Roach who took out the ARIA for best Male Artist last night!

21.01.2022 Today marks the 13th anniversary of the National Apology to the Stolen Generations. This morning we attended Reconciliation South Australia's 2021 Apology Breakfast to recognise the trauma suffered by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as a result of the Stolen Generations. Five survivors of the Stolen Generations were interviewed on a panel by Peter Buckskin - they will be featured in Reconciliation SA's new documentary "Unbreakable".... The sold out event featured a Welcome to Country by Kaurna and Ngarrindjeri Elder Major "Moogy" Sumner, two performances from Pitjantajatjara singer/songwriter Frank Yamma, and artwork on display from Ngarrindjeri 'artist in residence' Jacob Stengles. Are you doing anything to recognise the historic anniversary today?

20.01.2022 Congratulations to the four Aboriginal film students who started work this week at Channel 44 as part of a new mentorship program by the community broadcaster in partnership with South Australian Film Corporation. The screen creatives will learn new skills and have the opportunity to create original content for broadcast as they gain hands on experience in television production.

Sign the petition pushing for a national database that can be referred to when labelling place names: www.change.org/traditionalplacenames

19.01.2022 Did you catch The Drum on ABC last night? The discussion was around the Disability Royal Commission, which has heard about a system of child protection that Indigenous children are eight times more likely to end up in, as they're taken from parents with disabilities at a higher rate to non-Indigenous children.

19.01.2022 This Remembrance Day let’s ensure we recognise those who weren’t acknowledged for their service when they returned from fighting for our country. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women have stepped up to assist Australian defense forces during every war Australia has been involved in. But they returned to a home where they couldn't even vote, and faced discrimination rather than praise for their contribution. It seems to have been only in recent years that their efforts have been publicly recognised. Swipe through the images to learn more about each of the Aboriginal Black diggers featured in this Remembrance Day illustration by the folks at Wingaru Education

18.01.2022 Aboriginal heritage can be preserved by listening to traditional owners, before huge fines are required. Unlike what we have seen with Section 23 of the Aboriginal Heritage Act, which allows Premier Steven Marshall to approve the damage or disturbance of sacred sites.

17.01.2022 A symbolic ceremony marked the start of our inaugural Aboriginal Engagement Committee meeting in Clare on Thursday, 12 November Quenten Agius, Ngadjuri Na...tion Aboriginal Corporation Chair, performed a Welcome to Country ceremony and involved all committee members by asking them to bring a handful of soil from home. After everyone placed their soil on the floor, Quenten added a layer of white ochre to symbolise that we’re all connected to Country and to one another, and that together we must care for Country. The Aboriginal Engagement Committee will act as a direct connection between First Nation communities in our region and the Northern and Yorke Landscape Board and aims to increase the participation of Aboriginal people in the Board’s activities. 07.01.2022 Looking for something to do Friday night? 06.01.2022 "Few in big cities know about the 'mound springs', but they are of deep cultural significance for the Arabana people who hold native title over Lake Eyre and its surrounds. They are also a precious source of life for humans, animals and plants in a hostile environment. But the Arabana people fear the extraction of tens of millions of litres of water from the basin each day by mining, petroleum and pastoral industries threatens the existence of the springs by reducing flow pressure in the aquifer to the extent that the springs dry up."

03.01.2022 You might recall our cover story about the potential for drilling at sacred site Lake Torrens in the last edition of Aboriginal Way. Mining has now been approved by the Marshall State Government.

03.01.2022 13 February 2021 marks the 13th anniversary of the National Apology to the Stolen Generations, who suffered as a result of past government policies of forced ch...ild removal and assimilation. Today, we pause, reflect, and recognise the intergenerational trauma and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people forcibly removed as children from their families and communities. #Reconciliation #NationalApology #Sorry #Truthtelling

02.01.2022 Where do you go if you’re trying to learn words in Indigenous languages from across Australia? Or if you’re trying to find words from your family’s background? You might know if you’ve tried that it can be difficult to find the right resources to do this. That’s why the Research Unit for Indigenous Language came up with the 50 Words Project, an online resource providing 50 words in as many Indigenous languages in Australia as possible. Seeing as though there are between 800 ...and 900 Indigenous languages across the country, this no small task! We spoke to Professor Rachel Nordlinger about the project for Aboriginal Way, listen at the link below: https://www.nativetitlesa.org/50-words-project/

02.01.2022 The "Australian Reconciliation Barometer" has just been released for 2020 by Reconciliation Australia. Take a look at the progress of reconciliation between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians - it's the only survey which measures this type of progress in the country.

02.01.2022 Well done to all the winners! Naidoc South Australia shared a live stream of the awards ceremony that you can find on their Facebook page.
