23.01.2022 Do you know a young woman aged between 16-20 years old who struggles with confidence, self-esteem and relationships? The Empower Program may be for them. This 6 weeks fun, creative and interactive program covers topics like self-esteem, self-compassion, confidence, communication, boundaries and consent in a supportive environment. And the best thing? It is FREE as we have gained funding from the Community Service Directorate to offer this work to the community. The program c...ommences Wednesday 14th of October and runs until 25th November (break week in the middle) 4-5:30pm on Wednesday each week in a central Belconnen location. The program is run by two experienced facilitators Jemima and Alex. Jemima is a registered Professional Arts Therapist with a background in youth work, case management, mental health and community development. Jemima is passionate about empowering young women through the arts. Alex has recently completed her Certificate 4 in Community Services and Community Development. She is enjoying loving working with the team at Sanctuary Australia as a Case Support Worker. Alex has a passion for working with people and loves singing and performing... both professionally and just for the fun of it. Registrations for the program close this Friday the 9th of October COB. Please pm us for a referral form or for further information. Registration is essential and bookings are limited, so get in quick. #empowerement #workshopscanberra #canberra #mentalhealth #selfesteem #confidence

20.01.2022 One of the beautiful privileges Kim and I have as founders of #sanctuaryaus is watching the lovely friendships that are fostered at #womensgroup Especially when the ladies share stories, vulnerabilities and skills with each other. This tea cosy was crocheted by one lady for another and gifted with friendship knowing how hosting people for tea and delicious delights brings the recipient joy and resilience. It is a symbol of encouragement for us all - to share the good we have, to build the capacity of others to do what makes them come alive. Its amazing how small gestures like this creates its own positive momentum to foster deep, connected, healthy relationships within our community.

19.01.2022 We had a similar discussion at #womensgroup last night. That we have an opportunity to try things differently and learn new ways of doing things with our kids and they will benefit from this #moretime #stories #cooking #dancing #siblingsteachingeachother #norush #beingpresent

15.01.2022 It can be difficult for children to understand the changes and uncertainty they are experiencing due to the COVID-19 situation. They can be particularly vulnera...ble to feelings of anxiety, stress and sadness. It’s important to talk to them about what’s happening. Do this by: - Asking your child if they’d like to talk about the issue if they don’t want to discuss it don’t push it. - Being honest about what is happening. - Using age-appropriate language. - Being mindful of what they’re watching online or on tv and how much exposure they’re getting to COVID-19 news and events each day. - Offering reassurance - Showing them examples of people doing positive things to help with the situation. - Sticking to regular family routines to help them feel secure. - Taking care of yourself and setting a good example. 12.01.2022 Did you know this week is #nationalchildprotectionweek Everyday #sanctuaryaus works to fulfil our vision of #buildingsafercommunitiesforchildren "Putting children first means prioritising the safety and wellbeing of children. To grow up well children need to feel safe and loved, have a chance to play and explore, have a say in decisions that affect them, and access to essential things like food, shelter and healthcare. For children to thrive we need to come together as a #community and put children’s needs first"(NAPCAN 2020) #playyourpart

12.01.2022 I posted this chart a year ago and today I am working on reframing these three stages within the current context of physical distancing and multilayered narrati...ve of health and safety. And as expressive therapists, we are challenged to rework these concepts within telehealth dynamics and the isolation brought on by the pandemic. Here is what I wrote in 2019: One of the strengths of expressive and body-based approaches comes about through various activities involving regulation. While we often talk about self-regulation, actually the way to establish it is through co-regulation (with caregiver and therapist) and social or shared regulation (working together to regulate). Nice chart that summarizes these concepts with a focus on children (this pertains to adults too).

08.01.2022 Reconciliation is a journey for all Australians as individuals, families, communities, organisations and importantly as a nation. At the heart of this journey are relationships between the broader Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation, and in playing our part we collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures, and futures (https://nrw.reconciliation.org.au//20-ways-to-be-in-this-/)
