20.01.2022 One of the most famous tennis stars of all time, Helen Wills ranked as the top female player for a total of nine years in the 1920s and 1930s. Calder sculpted h...er in wire twice, first in 1927 and again the following year, giving us an insight into the development of his wire sculpture and his evolving interest in the representation of motion. Whereas Helen Wills I seems to focus on cleverly re-creating the elements of a tennis player in wire, Helen Wills II is an attempt to evoke a figure in the moment of action, writes Terry Erskine Roth. 15.01.2022 Carl Zigrosser and Erhard Weyhe were born on this day in 1891 and 1883, respectively. Together, Zigrosser and Weyhe were responsible for Calder’s first exhibiti...on of wire sculpture, held at the Weyhe Gallery, New York, in FebruaryMarch 1928. A book dealer by trade, Weyhe had expanded his Manhattan-based shop to include a gallery nearly a decade earlier, hiring Zigrosser to manage the art program. While the works in Wire Sculpture by Alexander Calder didn’t sell terribly well, the show garnered ample press coverage, and the artist considered it to be the first significant exhibition of his work. Calder’s wire portrait of Zigrosser now resides in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and his portrayal of Weyhe belongs to the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. 06.01.2022 Sir Isaac Newton invented the colour wheel in 1706 by refracting white sunlight into its six colours. The realisation that light alone was responsible for colou...r was radical. The wheel proved to be a very useful tool for artists and I would say just about everybody has painted a colour wheel at some point in their lives. When did you first paint a colour wheel? See more
