25.01.2022 A fantastic days sailing today with the first 2 races of the Club Championship being contested. The fleet was small today with a few boats and crews competing at other events. The breeze built throughout the day and race 1 started in a 12kt NNE and was 15kts by the completion. Race 2 was started swiftly in at least 15kts of breeze and during the race the downwind legs proved to be exciting with the building breeze and an out-going tide. Results to follow. ... Next racing is the Merv Anderson Sprint race series 8 November. Great practice for the Flying Fifteens prior to their State Championships.

21.01.2022 Congratulations (again) to Chris and Ian Gregg for winning the King of Bramble Bay Regatta. After day 1 Chris and Ian were placed 2nd with a 1,2 and 2 while Bob Franks and Nigel Lott were leading with a 2,1 and 1. It was all to come down to today’s race which Chris and Ian won to clinch the regatta for the second year in a row. Today’s conditions were light to variable 5-8 knots NE. Some local knowledge and experience paid off for the crews that went far left and picked up the Seabreeze early in today’s long course to Otter Rock and return. Thanks to all that travelled from all directions to join us this weekend. We hope to welcome you back again soon.

21.01.2022 While the Flying Fifteen sailors were competing at Tin Can Bay, a couple of our members assisted with running a rescue boat for the Scarborough Outrigger Canoe Club’s regatta at Woody Point.

20.01.2022 Sandgate Yacht Club is conducting the King of Bramble Bay 2-day Regatta this weekend Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th October. Early starts both days at 1000hrs with high tides at 1016 and 1048 respectively. Observe COVID safe-distancing while at the Club. Saturday’s event is planned to be a long course event around fixed marks which will have crews seeing most of Bramble Bay. Sunday we have windward-leeward racing planned. ... The current forecast is looking very nice for 8-12 knot Easterly breeze on Saturday and 8-10 knot Easterlies on Sunday. Race fees for the regatta will be $30 for both days and $20 per boat for one day only. Any assistance offered to the Start Crew will be much appreciated. We hope to see you at the club this weekend!

18.01.2022 Racing at Sandgate YC this Sunday for the Merv Anderson Sprint Series. This event is a series of short races with the first warning signal at 1300hrs. High tide of 2.11m is predicted for 1452hrs. Again any assistance you can give to the start crew will be greatly appreciated. Last race meeting was the first 2 races of the Club Championship for 2020/2021. Results for that event are following. ... Hope to see you all on Sunday

16.01.2022 2 events have taken place at SYC in the past few weeks. The Excelsior Cup was run with competitors visiting from other clubs. There were 6 wind surfers, a Sharpie and 3 (or 4?) Flying Fifteens competing in strong 25 knot winds. The course set was Windward/Leewards and only 1 race was completed due to the strengthening winds. The race was won by David Larter and Laurie Williamson in Criss Cross and runners up were Neil Lestor and Graeme Dobson in Saffron. Thanks to all the... visitors and we hope you return to SYC again soon - it's not always strong winds and rough choppy seas.... honest! Refreshments were provided after racing with sausages, kebabs, salads and Christmas Cake for all the competitors and volunteers. The final event for this year was held on Sunday. The Christmas Fun Race. The committee of the Sandgate Yacht Club would like to wish all a very merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year. We look forward to seeing you all again in 2021!

15.01.2022 Well done Greg and Laurie Williamson!

14.01.2022 Reminder: AGM starting tomorrow morning at 11:00am, followed by Lunch and season trophy presentation, bragging and tall stories.

14.01.2022 See below in comments for some additional short videos. (Sorry, technologically challenged this morning!)

14.01.2022 Club Championship races 1 & 2 this Sunday at Sandgate Yacht Club. Early high tide of 2.46m at 1030 means another early race start at 1000hrs. Any assistance given to the start crew would be greatly appreciated. ... See you Sunday!

14.01.2022 Races 1 and 2 of the Summer Series were conducted today and the threat of late storms held off for a perfect days sailing. The PRO today selected a Triangle-Sausage-Triangle course from the handbook and race 1 was run with a fickle light NE breeze and made for tight first windward mark roundings. It took most of the race for the cobwebs to be blown out and the boats found their groove. PRO elected to realign the course during the break between races and the breeze built t...o about 10kts before the start of the second race. The starts were hotly contested today and Race 2 was no different with boats bailing-out at the favoured boat-end of the line - all managed to get away cleanly and without serious incident. It was great to see the return of racing and while the clubhouse activities may have not continued after racing, the boat park was an active area for discussion and debrief. Next race day is the King of Bramble Bay Regatta 3-4 October.

13.01.2022 A beautiful (almost) winters day sailing today for the last day of this years sailing season. Today’s event was races 7&8 of the Club Championship and we were joined by Darwin Sailing Club’s Gary, Lake Macquarie Yacht Club’s Mark and Brownsea Water Activities Centre’s Erika who didn’t get the wins today but conditions weren’t the easiest. A lot of conversation was had this morning over the forecast - everyone had read a different source and each had a different story to tell. In the end, it was a little bit from everyone’s forecast. Thanks to all that attended including a past Commodore from Mackay and those that assisted with the race starts today. Results for today’s racing, the Summer Series and other events will be awarded at next week’s presentation.

13.01.2022 A challenging day was had by some crews for the Merv Anderson Sprint Series this year while other revelled. This is normally a great lead up event for the Flying Fifteen crews prior to their State Championships the fortnight after this event. This year the breeze was a firm 15-20 knot SE’ly. 5 starters headed out to the race course, 4 finished the first race, 2 finished the remaining races leaving one boat with a lot of work to do before packing up to go to Tin Can Bay for th...e Flying Fifteen State Championships. Congratulations to David Larter and Albert Schauss for sailing safely and consistently to take the win. Great to see previous club Commodore Andrew Pearson on the water again also. Good Luck to all the crews sailing at the State Championships 21 and 22 November at Tin Can Bay Yacht Club Inc. Full results: https://syc.org.au//uploads/2020/11/Merv-Anderson-Sprints-

11.01.2022 We hope you are all well and enjoying the minor lift in restrictions this weekend. Here is a great video to help spend some spare time. Wouldn’t it be great to an Aussie entry in the cup again?! https://youtu.be/Yb4JhkF1240

11.01.2022 Some photos of today’s first races of the Winter Series. Windward/leewards were planned, but Winter happened. Breeze was light, shifty and unpredictable. Next racing is in 2 weeks. Keep an eye on the page for some minor tweaks to the Winter Series rules (guidelines).

11.01.2022 To all members and friends. News and emails have been circulating regarding the imminent closure of the Queensland Maritime Museum. It is deeply saddening that a State such as Queensland, which has a rich maritime history, should be facing the shut-down of its Maritime Museum through lack of funding. Our Club, being one of the earliest yacht clubs operating in Queensland, has a vested interest in seeing this museum remain open to the public. Boats which have played a vital c...ontribution to the sailing history of the State need on-going preservation and protection afforded by this facility. These boats include Miss Sandgate which has a long history with SYC and adorn the walls of the clubhouse, as well as Ella’s Pink Lady which was sailed solo around the world by Jessica Watson. Signing the below petition allows us to add our voices and concerns to the other thousands of signatories who are aggrieved at the possibility of this closure. SYC would appreciate if you could join with us in signing the petition and look forward to the continuing operation of the museum. https://maritimemuseum.us4.list-manage.com/track/click

06.01.2022 Vale Merve Andersen - Authored by Damian B Yrt The QLD Sharpie Assn State Titles Competitors at the Lake Cootharaba Sailing Club Monomastets regatta all flew bl...ack flags during the regatta to recognise Merve. We were all saddened to hear of his passing. Some time ago in the 1990's, I had the privilege of having Merve steer my Sharpie "Q769 Talking Heads" in a race at RQYS. The race was a QLD Sharpie Assn "Golden Oldies" event, where past Sharpie Skippers and Sailors were invited to steer the current boats with that boats current crew. Merve helmed Talking Heads, Bob Franks was Forward Hand and I was on sheet. We were first home that day in a Sharpie from Sandgate Yacht Club. Second over the line was John Cuneo and Greg Clark in Chris Tuquins boat. Merve was elated at the win, and he told me how he had built many of John's boats but rarely had he finished in front of Cueno. It was a great day and a great honour to have Sailed that day with Merve, both Bob and I recall our own competitions with Tyquin over the years and we too were very happy with the outcome. It was one of my most memorable races and most memorable QLD Sharpie events. Especially sharing that race with Merve, it was a great day and a great honour. Thanks Merve for being there to fix our Sharpie's at your yard in Sandgate and for all those other boats, especially the Sharpie's, that you built. Damian Byrt, Sharpie Sailor, former SYC See more
