25.01.2022 Bladder: The bladder is an organ that stores urine (wee). In Australia, 1 in 3 women, 1 in 10 men and 1 in 5 children have a bladder control problem Signs of a healthy bladder A healthy bladder: empties 4-6 times each day... can hold up to 400-600ml of urine (the sensation of needing to empty occurs at 200-300 ml) may wake you up once at night to pass urine and twice if you are older (i.e. over 65 years of age) tells you when it is full but gives you enough time to find a toilet empties completely each time you pass urine does not leak urine In many cases incontinence can be prevented, better managed and even cured. We are experienced in treating incontinence in both men and women. Please call us on 9529 8600 to book a consultation with one of our talented physiotherapists. #sanssouciphysiotherapy #bladderhealth #incontinence #pelvicfloor #health #womenshealth #menshealth #physiotherapy #treatment #sydney #sanssouci #kogarah See more

25.01.2022 Is it time to replace your running shoes? Running shoes are a vital component towards creating a comfortable and safe running experience. The variety in shoes span far and wide with every manufacturer creating their own designs, styles, and fit. Despite ongoing advances in shoes, none of them last forever. Knowing when to retire and replace your runners can help improve your running experience and reduce the risk of injuries. Things to ke...ep an eye on: - Holes: If part of your foot, especially toes, have worn through the upper and created holes within the fabric/mould. Consider whether or the sizing of your shoe (length and/or width) is the right fit for you. - Lining: Look inside of the shoe and check if there is excessive wear in the lining. The heel section is common area that can get worn down quickly especially if the shoe is too small. - Creasing: If you have noticed excessive crinkling or creasing along the side of the mid sole. This indicates that the shock absorbing layer of the shoe is no longer attenuating the running loads as effectively. - Out sole: The bottom most part of the shoe that provides traction along the ground and durability necessary to safely negotiate the terrain under varying weather conditions. #sanssouciphysiotherapy #physiotherapy #physio #running #runningshoes #exercise #prevention See more

24.01.2022 Many of the people that we see in our clinics are desk workers and often suffering fairly similar complaints, so for that reason we have put together our top stretches to do at work and in the office every day to help avoid these issues in the first place: HIP & KNEE STRETCH: Place one knee on your chair and the other foot firmly on the floor. Supporting yourself on a desk perform a controlled bend forwards from the hip. HAMSTRING STRETCH...: Place one foot up on your chair. Standing with your hands on your hips, lean forwards to feel a slight stretch in your hamstring. TRUNK ROTATION: Sitting on your chair, keep your feet firmly on the ground facing forward. Twist your upper body to each side, touching your arm on the back of your chair. UPPER TRAP STRETCH: Gently pull your head toward each shoulder until a light stretch is felt. PEC STRETCH: Place one arm out to your side against a wall or door frame. Step forwards with the foot closest to your outstretched arm and plant your foot on the ground. With your opposite hand on hip, feel the hip away from the door frame turn backwards until you feel a nice stretch in your pec muscle. 24.01.2022 For all of the benefits of sports and exercise participation, one of the occasional downsides is a sports injury. Fortunately, sports injury occurs relatively infrequently, so the health and psychological benefits of participating in sport far outweigh the potential temporary downside of a sports injury. Luckily, sports injury care continues to improve every year. Health professionals, such as your sports physiotherapist or sports physician, deal with the d...ay-to-day management of sports injury and are highly qualified in the field of sports injury management. If you wish to assess, accurately diagnose and optimally manage your sports injury in the shortest possible time, then you should seek the advice of your sports injury physiotherapist or a sports physician. 23.01.2022 Did you know? Therapeutic shock waves were introduced into medicine as a treatment for eliminating kidney stones 20 years ago! Discovered as a side effect was the effect on bone healing (bone density increase) as well as accelerated tissue healing in the area. There are basically two different methods:... - Focused shockwaves Electromagnetically generated, high energy, deep penetration, and precisely focussed in small spot. - Radial Shockwaves Radial shockwaves are often referred as radial pressure waves. In physical terms this is the correct definition. The radial pressure waves are pneumatically generated pulses (compressed air). The compressed air is used to drive a projectile in a cylinder inside the hand piece to a shock transmitter. The kinetic energy generating from the motion and weight of the projectile converts into acoustic energy when the projectile hits the shock transmitter. The acoustic pulses then transmit into the underlying tissue, treating a larger area than the focused shockwave. The highest energy of the pressure waves will be at the surface of the treatment point, gradually decreasing as the penetration depth increases. The penetration depths are normally 1-3cm. #SansSouciPhysiotherapy #ShockWave #Didyouknow #therapy #exercise #health #physiotherapy See more

22.01.2022 Acupuncture is a key element of traditional Chinese medicine and has been practised for more than two thousand years. Acupuncture is used to treat a wide range of conditions and to alleviate various types of pain or dysfunction, in both acute (recent onset) and chronic (long standing) conditions. Acupuncture takes a holistic approach in understanding dysfunction, and encourages balance of the body. Acupuncture involves the insertion of ve...ry fine needles at specific acupuncture points, on meridians (or channels) in the body to various depths. Meridians (or channels) are not anatomically identical to the distribution of nerves or blood vessels. The number of the needles used may vary and the site of insertion may be at, near, or away from the symptomatic area. For example, needles may be inserted on patients foot to treat lower back pain. Acupuncture needles are single-use, disposable sterile needles. When used correctly by a qualified practitioner, acupuncture is a very safe, effective and a natural method of treatment with very few side effects. The number of treatments needed varies. In many cases, people experience some changes in their symptoms within few sessions. However, it depends on the condition, severity and other factors. 21.01.2022 We are probably all guilty of not getting enough sleep at night. Whether you have trouble sleeping or decided to watch just ‘one more’ Netflix show, you really should be aiming to get a minimum of 7 hours of sleep each night It's true: Being short on sleep can really affect your weight. While you weren't sleeping, your body cooked up a perfect recipe for weight gain. When you’re short on sleep, it’s easy to lean on a large latte to get... moving. You might be tempted to skip exercise (too tired), get takeout for dinner, and then turn in late because you’re uncomfortably full. If this cascade of events happens a few times each year, no problem. Trouble is, more than a third of Australians aren't getting enough sleep on a regular basis. Yet experts agree that getting enough shut-eye is as important to health, well-being, and your weight as are diet and exercise. Skimping on sleep sets your brain up to make bad decisions. It dulls activity in the brain’s frontal lobe, the locus of decision-making and impulse control. A second study found that sleeping too little prompts people to eat bigger portions of all foods, increasing weight gain. And in a review of 18 studies, researchers found that a lack of sleep led to increased cravings for energy-dense, high-carbohydrate foods. Sleep is like nutrition for the brain. Most people need between 7 and 9 hours each night. Get less than that, and your body will react in ways that lead even the most determined dieter straight to Ben & Jerry’s Information from: https://www.webmd.com/diet/sleep-and-weight-loss#1 If you are having trouble with your sleep, the following website has great resources that could help: www.fast-asleep.com See more

20.01.2022 Exercise can help to prevent, delay and manage Alzheimer’s disease! But as it mostly affects older people, it can often seem quite daunting. Seated exercises ar...e aimed at building or maintaining muscle strength and balance, and are less strenuous than exercises in a standing position They can be part of a developing programme, with the number of repetitions of each exercise increased over time. The goals of exercise to prevent or manage Alzheimer's are to maintain or increase muscle mass and strength; decrease risk factors for cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome; increase testosterone levels; and provide a socially engaging and interactive environment. Exercise (particularly resistance or weight training) also increases testosterone levels, which can help to protect brain cells and preserve cognitive function. Accredited Exercise Physiologists are expertly trained to work effectively with the specific needs of older people, including those with Alzheimer's and dementia. There’s a lot to take in! 19.01.2022 Not only Cancer Rehab Awareness Week 2020 but World Physiotherapy Day today too . This day marks the unity and solidarity of the global physiotherapy commun...ity. It is an opportunity to recognise the work that physiotherapists do for their patients and community. Our #CRAW campaign supports this mission. Hear insights from PINC&STEEL physios here https://vimeo.com/271210171 Rehabilitation has never been a part of the traditional patient pathway for oncology patients. The primary focus of oncology medical professionals is to eliminate or control disease by suppressing cancer cell growth or directly removing the tumour. These treatments are increasingly successful, but they also damage normal tissue. While oncology specialists seek the best possible outcomes, i.e. the absence of any residual cancer this does not mean that meaningful emotional and functional recovery is complete. Many of our healthcare systems do not have the means to effectively assess post treatment functional impairment and there is a real lack of awareness about oncology rehabilitation services. This is why we must share the message about the vital role cancer rehab physiotherapists have in re-enabling those with a cancer diagnosis to live well and live fully and continue to achieve their goals. Our PINC&STEEL Certified physiotherapists are uniquely positioned to offer evidence based oncology rehabilitation and support those with a cancer diagnosis with essential aspects of their recovery and wellness that aren't offered elsewhere. #CRAW2020 #WorldPTDay #globalPT #cancerrehab

14.01.2022 October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and an important time for the National Breast Cancer Foundation to highlight why research in this area is so crucial. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia, with 8 people losing their lives to the disease every day. Symptoms of breast cancer may include: A lump or thickening in the breast, especially if it is only in one breast Changes to the shape or size of the breast... Changes to the shape of the nipple, such as crusting, sores or ulcers, redness or inversion (a nipple that turns in when it used to point out). Changes to the skin of the breast, such as dimpling (sometimes looking like an orange peel), a rash, scaly appearance, unusual redness or other colour changes Fluid leaking or discharge from the nipple that occurs without squeezing Persistent, unusual pain that doesn’t go away Swelling or discomfort in the armpit Early detection gives the best possible chance of survival, so it is important to be breast aware to ensure that you can spot any changes as soon as they appear. #sanssouciphysiotherapy #breastcancerawareness #breastcancer #womenshealth #menshealth #cancersucks #awareness See more

13.01.2022 Physical Effects of Radial Pressure Waves Radial pressure waves offer a non- invasive treatment solution to long term insertion and soft tissue pathologies. Local treatment in the affected area will support and reset the healing pattern. There are several working hypothesis for the physical effects of radial pressure waves:... Pain reduction Increased metabolism Revascularization Reduced muscle tone Conditions treated: Plantar fasciitis Achilles tendinopathy Gluteal tendinopathy Tennis and Golfers elbow Trochanteric bursitis How to perform a radial pressure wave treatment: Radial Pressure Wave treatment, given in the right dose for the correct indications is an excellent treatment for many chronic conditions other treatment forms can’t improve or heal. Radial Pressure Wave therapy is very well received among therapists because of positive outcome results for a comparatively short treatment period. Radial Pressure Wave therapy is experienced differently from patient to patient. Some localised pain may be experienced during the treatment session. As the condition improves so does the comfort during the treatment. Treatment: Depending on the indication, 3-5 sessions in total at 5-10 days intervals are the most common treatment frequency. An initial treatment success could be evaluated after 3-4 sessions but additional improvement could be noted for 3 months. #sanssouciphysiotherapy #physiotherapy #treatment #shockwave #therapy #physio #injury #pain #kogarah #sanssouci See more

13.01.2022 Always Was, Always Will Be. Always Was, Always Will Be. recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. We are spiritually and culturally connected to this country.... Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists. Always Was, Always Will Be. acknowledges that hundreds of Nations and our cultures covered this continent. All were managing the land - the biggest estate on earth - to sustainably provide for their future. NAIDOC Week 2020 acknowledges and celebrates that our nation’s story didn’t begin with documented European contact whether in 1770 or 1606 - with the arrival of the Dutch on the western coast of the Cape York Peninsula. The very first footprints on this continent were those belonging to First Nations peoples. NAIDOC 2020 invites all Australians to embrace the true history of this country a history which dates back thousands of generations. It’s about seeing, hearing and learning the First Nations’ 65,000+ year history of this country - which is Australian history. 11.01.2022 Get your moustaches ready, its Movember! In 2003, a couple of mates from Melbourne, Travis Garone and Luke Slattery, talked 30 blokes into growing moustaches to help raise money for prostate cancer research. The idea was so successful, they created a website and Movember was born, the annual campaign to grow and groom a moustache during November and raise funds for men’s health. Prostate cancer is the sixth leading cause of cancer de...aths in the world and accounts for around 15% of all cancers in males, and yet relatively little is known about it. What is known is that it can be cured if detected in time, which is why Movember is so important for raising awareness and saving lives Photo: @garagecuttingcrew #sanssouciphysiotherapy #physiotherapy #sydney #movember #over #mentalhealth #dgr #menshealth #mobro #mentalhealthawareness #gentlemansride #men #health #inspiration #moustachet #fitness See more

08.01.2022 Shin splints is a condition characterised by pain along, or just behind the tibia (shinbone) during physical activity. Shin splints is a common sports injury and is caused by repetitive loading stress on the tibia during sports involving running and jumping. The pain felt as a result of shin splints is due to inflammation of the muscles and fascia around the tibia, and if not managed correctly, this can lead to inflammation of the bone and subsequent stress fractures ... Key management of shin splints is modifying load, that is, considering all the risk factors above and modifying (where possible) to reduce loading on the tibia. This may involve modifying training load as well as using graded exercise to improve the strength and mobility of the lower limb. The use of orthotics can help manage foot biomechanics if this is a contributing factor, and taping may assist with pain and return to sport. If you suspect you are suffering from shin splints, please call us on 02 9529 8600 to book a consultation with one of our physiotherapists. 08.01.2022 TIPS FOR EXERCISING WHEN YOU HAVE PAIN One of the most challenging aspects of living with an injury or chronic pain is how it can quickly impact your exercise routine. If you have been working towards a fitness or weight goal, this can be extremely demoralising. Here are a few tips that can help to keep you on track while you recover: ... - Try a new activity: When injury strikes, it can be tempting to stop exercising all together and rest while you recover. An injury can be frustrating, but it can also be an opportunity to try out a different sport or activity. E.g, if you are a runner with an ankle injury, you can keep up your fitness by swimming instead. - Exercise within your limits: If youre getting pain at 5km, this doesnt always mean you should give up running altogether. Your physiotherapist can help you monitor your symptoms carefully and plan an exercise routine that keeps your fitness up while reducing symptom flare-ups. - Improve your footwear and equipment: Injury and pain can be a great prompt to look at your equipment and technique. For example, with hip and knee pain, the type of shoes you wear can have a significant difference. Often pain has more than once cause, with technique and equipment more often than not having a substantial impact on the stress placed on your body. Your physiotherapist is an excellent source of advice in this area, dont hesitate to ask for a running, swimming or gym assessment. Call us on 02 9529 8600 for more information. Our physiotherapists are happy to discuss your condition with you and share their tips to help you stay pain-free. #sanssouciphysiotherapy #physiotherapy #health #fitness #pain #injury #exercise See more

07.01.2022 Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia. It is estimated that 1 in 7 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. There are a range of factors that contribute to your chance of developing breast cancer. Some risks can be reduced, while others you might have no control over. HOW TO MINIMISE YOUR RISK OF DEVELOPING BREAST CANCER... Alcohol intake > The risk of breast cancer rises as the number of drinks regularly consumed increases. Currently, there does not appear to be a ‘safe’ level of regular alcohol consumption. Being overweight and obesity > For women who have experienced menopause (postmenopausal women), being overweight or obese, or gaining weight, is linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. Keeping to a healthy weight range reduces the risk of breast cancer. Physical activity > Physical activity is associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer. Active women of all ages have a decreased risk of breast cancer compared to women who do not exercise. The more physically active you are, the greater the health benefits. Having children and breastfeeding > Having children is linked to a reduced risk of breast cancer. According to Cancer Australia, the risk of breast cancer decreases by 7% for each child the women has had. Breastfeeding is probably associated with a small decreased risk of breast cancer as well the longer the duration of breastfeeding, the lower the risk of breast cancer. Smoking > There is evidence that suggests an association between smoking and breast cancer risk. There may be an increased risk of breast cancer for women who started smoking at a very early age, or for many years before their first child. #sanssouciphysiotherapy #breastcancerawareness #breastcancer #awareness #womenshealth #menshealth See more

05.01.2022 It's that time of year again...time to focus on your New Year's resolutions. Many people begin an exercise program, but abandon it before Easter. However, you can increase your chances for long-term success if you follow these four simple tips to achieve your fitness goals. Determine Your Readiness Make sure you're both physically and mentally ready to start an exercise program. Tell your doctor/physio you want to begin a fitness regimen and you wa...nt to make sure you're healthy enough to start. Once you have been physically cleared to proceed, consider your mental readiness. How likely are you to stick with an exercise program once you begin? Create a Plan Before you start your exercise program, answer three questions. First, when will you exercise? Identify three days and times that are convenient for you and stick with those days. Second, what type of exercise will you do? The best type of exercise is one you enjoy. Don't worry about what everyone else is doing; pick an exercise that works for you. Choose from activities such as walking, cycling, running, swimming, weightlifting, tennis etc. Third, how much time will you spend exercising? Start with as little as 10 minutes per session and slowly build up to at least 30 minutes per workout. Bring a Friend You may know someone who resolved to start exercising in the New Year. Begin your fitness journey together. It will increase your chances for success and you'll have more fun. Take It Easy Think of your resolution as a lifelong commitment to a healthier lifestyle. You are much more likely to be successful if you take it easy at the beginning. You may know people who train six days a week, but it's fine to start with three. You may see people engage in a diverse array of physical activities, but a 15-minute walk three days a week is a great place to begin. #sanssouciphysiotherapy See more

01.01.2022 EXERCISE DURING PREGNANCY WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW Exercise during pregnancy has both short-term health outcomes, such as optimal delivery, and long-term health outcomes, such as protected health effects for baby and recovery postpartum for mum. PHYSIOLOGICAL CHANGES IN PREGNANCY... Did you know blood volume increases by up to 50% during pregnancy? That’s the equivalent of a 1.25L bottle or more. This increase in blood is to facilitate the exchange of respiratory gases, nutrients and metabolites between mother and developing baby. This increase in blood volume can result in: Increased heart rate, at rest and when exercising Deeper and more rapid breathing Resistance of the arteries to blood flow, which can result in common swelling in feet, ankles, fingers and wrists. EXERCISE FOR PREGNANT WOMEN These factors need to be taken into account when creating exercise programs for pregnant women. An Accredited Exercise Physiologist studies these physiological responses to exercise, and are excellently placed to create appropriate and safe exercise programming for those who are expecting. Recommendations are now that pregnant women should aim to meet the prescribed physical activity levels of the Australian Physical Activity Guidelines: 150 minutes of moderate intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity exercise, or a combination of both, per week. All pregnant women should also be encouraged to include both aerobic and strength-conditioning exercises, and in particular, consider the importance of strength training for parenting.
