21.01.2022 Splendacrest Stables is a very busy and popular riding school located at Preston, just south of Toowoomba. Splendacrest has been in business for 20 years, and ...we specialise in providing basic riding lessons for children and adults from 5 years to 95 years! Literally hundreds of people have learned to ride, take care of, and then progress into horse ownership from their time spent at Splendacrest. We promote a holistic approach, including teaching how to feed, rug, administer to, and look after a horse, as well as the basics of saddling, bridling, and riding correctly. Our main equestrian focus is endurance riding, and we provide achievable pathways for children and adults to compete in the sport, with many successful National- and International-level riders having started their journey at Splendacrest. Now Splendacrest Stables is on the lookout for a couple of new riding instructors to join our busy team. We have both full-time and part-time positions available, and are quite flexible with our schedules. The main times are from 3pm-6pm weekdays, but we also offer weekday and weekend lessons. If you, or someone you know, might be interested in learning more about these positions, please contact Jay on 0438 309458 for more information. You must be an experienced rider, you must hold (or be able to obtain) a Blue Card, and you must have the ability to communicate well. EA or PCA qualifications preferred, however training will be provided to the right applicant/s. Good pay rates apply, commensurate with experience.

21.01.2022 **The following post shows images of an equine stomach post mortem. ** STOMACH SIZE I get asked all the time about feed and all manner of horse care topics. Alo...ng with all of the usual discussions about type of feed for particular horses, weights of feed etc... there is the topic of HOW MUCH to feed. How many dippers of chaff, how full should the 20litre bucket be, 1 feed per day or two??? Through the amazing process of dissections we have been involved in, we always look at the stomach. Sometimes finding ulcers or bots and varying degrees of health of the stomach lining. One thing I’ve noticed is that the larger horses of mixed breed (say between 14-17hh) is that the stomach size doesn’t vary all that much. Horses are grazing animals, we know this. Horses do well on smaller feeds more often, we also know this. A lot of people struggle to truly grasp this until they see it or it is explained thoroughly enough for them to fully understand from an anatomy perspective. Here I will show you a stomach (approx 15.2hh tb mare) she had had a normal breakfast but also a big special bucket of carrots and apples right before being laid to rest (not her daily feed, just a one off treat bucket) and then the contents of that stomach in relation to a very average sized 15 litre tub. I will also show you the absolute MAXIMUM sized feed I would ever feed a horse of that size. There are plenty of great articles around that talk about overflow of undigested feed into the hindgut and the subsequent problems, feed sizes and ulcers, gut health in all forms but I’m not here to talk about that. I am simply sharing in order to give the average horse owner a deeper understanding of the relative lack of size of the average sized horses stomach ** This post is not about what to feed or even how often. That will be very specific to each horse, it’s environment and situation. Please seek advice from your trusted equine veterinarian or independent nutritionist. ** Dissection with thanks and in conjunction with Southern Holistic Equine & Ev’s Equine Services

17.01.2022 Asking a horse to sit and lift with engagement (hind limbs stepping under the mass and lifting) is akin to asking a human athlete to do pull ups, squat thrusts,... push ups or stair climb workouts. They are hard to do and they hurt, so you can't do them for very long, and you can't do too many, and you can't ask for "just one more" once the tank is dry. And while a human athlete may want to get more fit, or get her varsity letter, or make a squad, and be internally driven and motivated by that, the horse has no such concepts or goals. So while dressage based training can be beneficial for the horse, it can also be its own little version of torture chamber for horses trained by riders who drill and grind. Far better to have a long game attitude, ask for only a little a few days a week, rather than to ask for (or demand) more than the horse can safely give in any given schooling session. WE can't feel what the horse is feeling, so we have to sort of guess. Better to guess it's enough for today too early than too late----

16.01.2022 Unfortunately I got flattened by a horse yesterday, and after a hospital trip this morning I've been told I've torn my rotator cuff muscles and will most likely be out of action for 6-8 weeks. I am devastated! I apologize for any inconvenience this causes. I will be doing my all to get back to it as fast as possible!

14.01.2022 Happy Father's Day to all human and fur babies daddies

05.01.2022 For those clients who ask me what the hyoid is when I feel it on your horse

03.01.2022 ** Dressage Issues: Jaw and Poll Problems ** A VERY common problem in dressage horses (and other disciplines) is that there is a reduced mobility of the poll (C...0-C1) and jaw joints which results in a bend at C1-C2. I have crudely circled them in the images. The yellow circle shows the incorrect forced pivot at C1-C2 and the red X is indicating the reduced mobility of the poll (C0-C1) and the TMJs. The bend at C1-C2 is incorrect and will be causing not only discomfort but inhibit performance and mobility. The motions of the poll at C0-C1 (where the head is attached to the top of the neck) includes flexion and extension as well as sidebending. The motion here is very reliant upon local structures such as the immediate bones ie Occiput (C0) and Atlas (C1) as well as local joints such as the TMJs. It is even affected by distant joints such as the sacro-iliacs. Reduced motion of these related joints will reduce the mobility of the poll (C0-C1). One such cause is excessively strong bridle and bits as well as training methods. This puts a huge strain on the poll and TMJs. As a result of reduced motion of the poll (C0-C1), the next joint C1-C2 (made of the Atlas and Axis) begins to flex. This joint should rotate. Flexion and extension here is incorrect. You can see in the two images randomly taken from Google that the neck is flexing at C1-C2 and NOT C0-C1. C0-C1 (the poll) is clearly not moving in either image. Unfortunately this is an all too common finding within the equine world. It causes a lot of discomfort in the horses and hugely affects performance. This discomfort can even lead to gastric ulcers. Improving the mobility is key but since there are issues distant within the body it is incredibly important to mobilise the entire body not just the poll and TMJs. If you notice this on your horse you would be wise to investigate it sooner rather than later.

03.01.2022 Before backing your youngster please read - A horse ages roughly 3 times faster than a human. So a 90 year old human is a 30 year old horse. Both very old, usu...ally arthritic, don’t have many of their original teeth left, and very likely retired and enjoying the finer things in life. A 25 year old horse is a 75 year old human. Still works so far. A 20 year old horse is a 60 year old human. At that point where the body doesn’t work like it use to but the brain is all there and wants to be active. A 13 year old horse is a 39 year old human. Middle aged, prime of their life where their knowledge and physical ability are about equal. So let’s get down to the babies and work our way up. A 3 year old horse is a 9 year old child. A child. Not ready for work by a long stretch. We have moved past sending children down the mines. A 4 year old horse is a 12 year old child. Often will do odd jobs for pocket money, maybe a paper round, mowing lawns etc. Basically a 4 yo horse can start a bit of light work to earn their keep. A 5 year old horse is a 15 year old teenager. Think they know it all, cocky, and ready to up their work and responsibilities. Still quite weak and not fully developed so shouldn’t be at their physical limit but can start building strength. A 6 year old horse is an 18 year old human. An adult. Ready to work hard. Pushing your youngster too hard too young will result in failure of many body parts. Joints, tendons, ligaments as well as their brains. Waiting one year at the beginning can give a horse another 10 years of useful working life. Be patient with your pride and joy! 01.01.2022 Kind of... At limited capacity....my shoulder is still not right but I am bored and missing harrassing the ponies so I'm going to be doing just 2 horses a day while I wait for further investigation into my injury later in the month. If you've been on my waiting list, I'll be contacting you to organise a day. If you don't hear from me in the next few days though, contact me please!
