24.01.2022 High Power Torches. I have attended numerous events - operational incidents, gradings, classifications and training sessions in which I have observed the follow...ing. During the night/darken area searches - insufficient illumination has been given to the dog search. At times, handlers only have had a head torch or a small hand torch. As we know, dogs can see approximately 5 times better than a human in the dark. However working in a high profile risk area, we should afford our dogs the best opportunity to be able to work a search area safely and effectively. High power torches - If used correctly for high risk search areas, can enhance the dogs and handlers search capability in mine opinion. Photo showing examples of torches.

24.01.2022 Search Dog Floki made Page2 in the Advertiser today. Proud day to see 2 of our canines in this program.

18.01.2022 Our dogs get shown off a lot here, but we have a group of members who don't get enough recognition. So today we'd like to thank our enthusiastic assistants, who come out to train without a dog of their own (yet!) These people are absolutely invaluable when training search dogs. They spend hours hiding in strange places, getting stepped on and slobbered on by the dogs. But they also have to understand all our training methods, how to set up hides, and how every dog works and is rewarded. We literally could not do what we do without our assistants, so a big thank you to them for their patience and dedication!

07.01.2022 Great focus and intensity in this young Labrador. Tarlii passed the canine screening test yesterday. All canines entering the program are tested for suitability. We have a duty of care to our canines to make sure they are able to enjoy their work. Our duty of care to the missing and victims of disaster requires us to train to the highest standards and use suitable canines.

07.01.2022 Just want to share a photo of Search Dog Floki in action with the Australian arm of the International COVID-19 Detector Dog project. Floki is one of many dogs... being trained by State and Federal agencies to sniff out and detect COVID-19 within the community. Internationally the project has identified that the COVID-19 dogs are often more accurate than currrent testing methods, do not require invasive sampling methods to test, and can return a result in minutes. The canines internationally have also been able to detect people that are asymtomatic and/ or negative, who would otherwise slip through current testing safety nets. The project in Australia is being lead by the University of Adelaide under Dr Susan Hazel and Dr Anne-Lise Chaber from the Scool of Animal and Veterinary Science. I have been lucky enough to be invited by the project leaders to participate in and support this innovative and game changing project. A big shout out to the Adelaide University team for taking the lead in bringing this capability to the forefront within our region. The power this type of capability brings to the table in their ability to enhance public safety, safe movement and travel is enormous, and it has huge implications in our response to and recovery from the Coronavirus pandemic. Search Dog Floki will be joined by Search Dog Cuba from the South Australian USAR Taskforce and I will be training both dogs alongside other dog teams from participating agencies both here in South Australia and interstate.
