23.01.2022 Here's a letter for visitors to send to the Minister. Please copy and paste into an email: To: [email protected] Cc: [email protected]; [email protected]... SUBJECT: AIRLIE MAIN STREET REDEVELOPMENT: OBJECTION TO LAND SWAP To Rachel Nolan MP Minister for Finance, Natural Resources and Art Queensland Government From: NAME: ADDRESS: DATE: AIRLIE MAIN STREET REDEVELOPMENT: OBJECTION TO LAND SWAP As a person who has holidayed in Airlie Beach several/many times, I/we wish to advise: Our objection to your department approving a land swap of any portion of the public open space adjacent to the Airlie Beach lagoon currently used as temporary car park, if such land swap is to be used to facilitate the relocation of a privately owned commercial property. Such relocation will; Severely fragment this public open space Reduce its capacity for public and community use for recreation, Prevent the holding of large community and commercial events Prevent provision of public infrastructure, such as Bowens planned foreshore water park for children Severely damage Airlie Beach as a holiday location, Compromise one of the reasons visitors decide to visit Airlie Beach Significantly reduce the quality of visitor experience Such approval would be: Contrary to Most Appropriate Use (MAU) legislation. Contrary to the Policies and Guiding principles of the Land Act Contrary to Whitsunday Town Plan building lines Set a precedent for adjacent land owners to apply for use of this public land Unfortunately until this particular land swap proposal has been refused by your department it will be used by vested interests as an excuse to delay the Airlie Beach Main Street redevelopment which we wish to see commenced as soon as possible We respectfully request that you act immediately to advise the relevant authorities that your department will not approve any such land swap proposal.
20.01.2022 Have your say, don't delay! Submissions close Monday 29th April at 5pm. Ask around and you will find a majority of Whitsunday residents are prepared to fight vigorously against the proposed Shute Harbour marina development, They continue to see it, after all these years, as still very dodgy - a clear landgrab that possibly only the naive would doubt. Sadly, Minister Seeneys recent statement about a world class facility at Shute exactly echoes sentiments expressed prior to... the failed and uncompleted Abel Point and Port of Airlie and Laguna Quays marinas which have empty berths year round to this day, some with huge ponds of impossible-to-dispose-of acid sulphate soil - all precipitously on the brink of the fragile World Heritage Great Barrier Reef. Shutes tidal movements, its deep layer of silt, its position at the heart of the Reef, make it a dead cert for disaster if this goes ahead. The questionable 30+year history of this proposal, the lack of need, the lack of financial capability, lack of adequate answers to the to the Environmental Impact Study and the current weak supplementary EIS, plus the disregard for overwhelming and blindlingly clear evidence that makes the proposal a looming disaster, may not yet have been drawn to the responsible ministers attention. Ratepayers and struggling businesses are already burdened with unexpected, over-inflated costs from the local councils insolvency and failed Port of Airlie they dont want to shoulder the infrastructure expenses and loss of business guaranteed if this project goes ahead.. The Whitsundays has endured negative press while trying to promote the green and blue ethos of the region. Why? Because of bad decision making by the powers that be. We ask Mr Seeney, please, please not to join those ranks and make it even worse. We dont need another 15 years of visual/traffic/tourism chaos here in what should otherwise be rightly one the Australias most beautiful destinations. Minister Seeney has a prime opportunity to dutifully serve the people of the Whitsundays, of Queensland and tourists world wide by protecting the reefs and waterways, the bays and crucial mangrove areas, the already strained economy of our region by just saying no to this highly questionable proposal. 16.01.2022 Despite strong winds and rain, no chance to advertise and a last minute call to action by email, Save Our Foreshore volunteers had the pink SOF caravan well set up at the market by 8am on Saturday morning. A fantastic effort with just short of 200 submissions discussed, signed and lodged with SOF in only 4 hours! Submissions need a lot more attention to detail than collecting petition signatures and volunteers all took the time to ensure everyone who made these submissions ...did so with a clear understanding of what they were signing. Great work, Saturday's team; Eric, Kirsten, John, Natasha, PJ, Steve, Jim J, Jonathan, Jacquie, Elmer, Peter, Adrian, Rory, Kerry and Suzette! Thank you all, it looks like the well-oiled, well trained SOF team just swung into action as you have done so many times before. People were genuinely interested and concerned and it was great to hear them thanking SOF for doing all the hard work. Thank you Adrian for making the caravan look great, too. XXX If you'd like to join in and haven't already got your name on the roster, send my Faye an email ([email protected]) or give her a call. She'd love to hear from you. Thanks again. See more
12.01.2022 Welcome to Country at the Greenpeace Open Day, Airlie Beach foreshore, 17-04-13. Wadda Mulli Thulgarrie. On behalf of the Elders and traditional custodians of this sea and land country, I would like to welcome you Captain and Crew of the Rainbow Warrior to our beautiful country. Ngaro Sea and Land country has its boundaries from the Conway Ranges, south to Repulse Bay and east taking in the Islands of the Whitsundays to the outer reef. As traditional custodians we work ...with various government bodies towards the preservation of our traditional homelands. This work allows us to care for country and to also monitor areas that are of particular cultural significance to us. We are extremely concerned about environmental issues that affect our county. Currently our energy is involved in addressing and responding to the proposed marina at Shute Harbour; we are concerned about potential subsequent impacts that may affect our country from the industrial development occurring in our neighbours country and we too are concerned about climate change and what that means for us as saltwater people. Our family group is one who bears strong connection with this country and for this reason feel a real affinity with Greenpeace and their mission. We too bear witness and have witnessed many changes over the decades and have endured much adversity. However, we hold our heads high and work towards the cultural self determination that we determine for ourselves. We hope your visit is rewarding and welcome you to enjoy our traditional homelands. We wish you safe passage through our waters. . See more
09.01.2022 LETS NOT BE PUSHED INTO LOSING OUR PUBLIC FORESHORE! The Save Our Foreshore group is committed 100% to the Airlie Beach main street upgrade. There is absolutely no reason why it should not proceed immediately. Our council, however, has recently revealed it wants to... swap the heart of our public foreshore (the carpark) for a piece of flood prone private land as a part of this upgrade. The heart of our town has been, and should always be, the foreshore parklands, not a small area of landscaping that fragments the park, obscures the vista along the street and divides the town. The central carpark at the heart of Airlie Beach has always been a temporary carpark. The area is zoned by the government for open space and recreational uses. This is its designated most appropriate use under the Land Act. Council have now bought land for a new carpark behind Magnums. They have agreed to prepare it for free parking asap. As soon as this is operational, the foreshore carpark can become parkland. In 2007 the community resisted councils attempt to give this open space to a private developer, FKP/Carmist. Nearly 7,000 people signed a petition to keep the towns central foreshore as open space. An independent assessor appointed by the state government recommended refusal of the development application. The same grounds for refusal still apply. The government then refused to allow council the necessary leases and the foreshore was saved; stating no further development on this public foreshore would ever be considered without overwhelming support from the community for that development. There is no overwhelming support for the current land grab. In spite of this, Mr Brunkers council now wants to pressure the community into accepting another private development on virtually the same public foreshore site. They claim it is necessary for floodproofing the main street. But there is no need for this public land loss. Council engineers state that flood proofing can take place with this section of road remaining where it is. In fact, they also confirmed that this would be the less costly option. The public foreshore belongs to the community and not to the council or a private developer. It is administered by the state. The community continues to indicate that the overwhelming support is for keeping the heart of our foreshore as public open space, for visitors, for family recreation and for promoting community and tourism events. If we agree to give away this public land for a 4 story hotel building now, the opportunity to acquire the current building in the future is gone forever. Lets keep the option alive to have a better foreshore for the future. If you want your foreshore saved please email the minister and let her know: [email protected] [email protected] SOF IS TRYING TO KEEP THIS PUBLIC LAND IN PUBLIC HANDS. OUR FORESHORE IS NOT COUNCILS TO GIVE AWAY. See more
02.01.2022 Please lodge an objection ... Here is some background material re submissions to Supplementary EIS for proposed Shute Harbour apartment and marina project: Save Our Foreshore believe that a development proposed for Shute Harbour on the Whitsunday mainland will have adverse economic, social and environmental effects both locally and, in a broader context, on the World Heritage values of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park....Continue reading
