19.01.2022 ~Jennifer here~ Today Laura and I picked up mare and foal (Lyric & Lennon) from Gold Coast Equine. They have been taken to our Beaudesert Sanctuary where they will be given a chance to settle in and allow Lennon the chance to recover from his eye removal surgery, and learn how to adjust to only having one eye. ... He is unsure about his surroundings, but will get used to it. He's only a baby so hoping it won't take long. His mum Lyric will go on a good feed program to get some weight on her being fed 3 times per day plus lots of hay so she can keep producing good quality milk for her foal. She has been Hendra Vaccinated, wormed and her feet will be done soon. Onwards and upwards for this beautiful pair. Thanks to everyone for your kind donations to make this possible

08.01.2022 HORSE OWNERS TAKE NOTE: Heatwave conditions can be very dangerous for horses. It is very important to keep a constant check on them as the temperatures climb over the next 3 days. ... WATER: Must be checked. Horses will NOT drink hot water. In the middle of the day, empty water troughs and replace with fresh cool water. HOSING: If your horse is overheating or looks uncomfortable, please take them in the shade and hose them down. Remember after hosing down you MUST scrape the water off. Sending a horse back out in the heat while dripping wet makes them even hotter as the water on their body heats up. An overheated horse, either from exercise or simple heat exposure, needs aggressive cooling. It is simply not true that you can't use cold water on a hot horse. That's a myth. In fact, such cooling may prevent a life-threatening condition from developing. Using cold water from a hose, run water over the horse's chest, the jugular grooves of his neck, and the lower legs. These areas have many superficial blood vessels that can be rapidly cooled by the water and will carry the cooled blood to the interior of the horse. Once the horse seems less distressed (breathing eases), progress to hosing the entire body. Continue the hosing until the water running off underneath the horse's body feels cool. This means the water is no longer picking up large amounts of heat from the surface of the skin. Please look after your horses over the coming days. Rugs off

06.01.2022 Beautiful Madonna is on stable rest while her injury is healing. Thank you to all of our generous supporters for getting Madonna the urgent care required for her injury.

06.01.2022 ~Jennifer here~ "Flemington" arrived this afternoon (thanks to Nat Miller for the transport). The meeting with Spida and Evie went well. He's a little firecracker and seems happy with his new surroundings. ... Spida adores him, Evie told him who's boss. To every single one of you who donated to the Flemington Fundraiser we thank you, you have allowed this little pony to have critical care in hospital to save his life. We must thank Gold Coast Equine for their very hard work saving Flemington's life.

05.01.2022 You may have noticed the page has been a little quiet this week... The team desperately needed some downtime due to having to make a very tough decision. Stunning Atlas, has been in care with SAHA just over a year saved from becoming pet food from Laidley sales. She stood stoically in the pens with the most shocking hooves the team had ever seen. ... After many X-ray’s, corrective farrier treatments, hoof supplements and a laminitic feed program, to the eye her hooves were looking much better on the outside. However, with bouts of lameness she was continually checked by our trusted vets to monitor where we were at with the position and servre rotation of her pedal bone. With the most recent X-rays taken on Wednesday it was evident that due to bony growth changes internally Atlas was extremely uncomfortable. Sadly her pain free days were becoming few and far between and our vet advised then and there it was time to give up our battle to rehabilitate her hooves. With tears in our eyes we made the decision to free our beautiful big girl from pain and let her cross the rainbow bridge. Through her time at SAHA Atlas lived with our President Rachel and her family where Ruby blessed her with the name Atlas, the SAHA sanctuary with staff that loved her, and at Court’s private residence as well. Atlas had many people who adored her especially Ron, one of our dedicated volunteers who spoiled her before we said goodbye. This beautiful grey mare had a soft eye, a kind heart - with a big personality that matched her size. She made us all smile on our worse days with her habit of bobbing her head over the fence at feed time telling you to hurry up, or just being there hanging her head for a hug when you needed it. Rescuing horses with hoof issues is always a huge risk. We have won some, and lost a some of these battles. Some horses can live a pain free long happy life as paddock companions, and other times if your lucky enough, a ridden horse. However, when we lose a fight with hooves it really hits home despite everything humanly possible being done right the failure feels like ours. Yet in all honesty the horse was absolutely failed and neglected by previous hands leaving them just too far gone without the correct care and treatment. In this sad situation there is none more fitting a saying than ’No hoof No horse’. The team believe strongly that even on our weakest days, we must make decisions that put the horses long term well being first and foremost, even if it hurts us deeply. Fly free over the rainbow bridge Atlas we tried big girl we truly did
