25.01.2022 An album for extracts from meeting minutes related to the former Carawatha Primary School site. Will be constantly updated.

25.01.2022 Examples locally where developments have been permitted where the area is just filled with bricks and concrete. Where is the green space and trees for canopy cover, birds and wildlife? Is this the future of the former Carawatha Primary School site?

24.01.2022 More reasons Carawatha Park should remain as public open space... "As human populations continue to move into cities, there are concerns that we are becoming disconnected from nature and that this is affecting our well-being (Fuller et al., 2007; Miller, 2005). Traffic danger, health and safety concerns, parental fears, negative attitudes to play and screen-based play are contributing to a nature deficit disorder among the UKs children (Miller, 2005)." "A study by the Roy...al Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and University of Essex describes connection to nature as enjoyment of nature, empathy for creatures, sense of oneness and sense of responsibility. The study also demonstrates that when young people are connected to nature, it has positive impacts on their education, physical health, emotional well-being and personal and social skills. It concludes that children connected with nature are more likely to be interested in their environment, will want to enjoy it and save it now and in the future (RSPB, 2013; Chen-Hsuan and Monroe, 2012)." http://www.nhm.ac.uk//Disconnect%20with%20nature%20Lit%20r

17.01.2022 Incredible how a community has allowed a site like this to be lost.

16.01.2022 The importance of green space for human well being has been ignored in this article, while we continue to infill with bricks and concrete, replace trees with houses and disconnect humans more and more from nature. By doing this, how do we expect anyone to care about our environment and other animals when all they see is bricks and concrete? Then we have the City of Melville talking about "ecological corridors" while at the same time filling up open space with high-density housing and chopping down almost 100 mature trees like what might happen at the former Carawatha Primary School. https://melvilletalks.com.au//green-civilization-benefits-

16.01.2022 Some food for thought on why we should preserve public open space like the former Carawatha Primary School site. "I think this is a time when it's a great reminder of how important it is to have a garden area." "My sense is if this period of lock-down goes for as long as people are expecting, there's going to be a kind of withdrawal where people will want to have everything they need within their own block of land.... "After the Spanish Flu, there was a significant change of pushing in garden suburbs, creating gardens, so that you would have that wonderful bucolic experience of a healthy countryside environment in the place where you live," Mr Ciemitis said. https://www.abc.net.au//how-coronavirus-could-for/12137122

13.01.2022 A video showing the development of the former Carawatha Primary School site in Willagee that used to be public open space but was sold to Satterely for this development.

12.01.2022 When you look at the satellite image of our suburbs and how little green canopy cover remains, it is incredibly short-sighted that people just want to consume more green space and replace it with concrete and bricks. The more we disconnect humans from nature by doing this, the more "out of sight out of mind" our society becomes as we head towards a biodiversity disaster.

12.01.2022 From the information provided in this document, the City of Melville is: 1. 25th out of 29th for Shrub and Tree Canopy Cover Changes in WA LGAs 2011-2016 (-6% loss) 2. Last (29th) for Green Cover Loss 2011-2016 (most loss is in Melville with a -6% green cover loss)... 08.01.2022 OMC Minutes 15 August 2006 Does anyone know what has happened here based on these Melville Council meeting minutes in 2006 in relation to the Carawatha Site? Page 40 in link below (section attached):... "It was reported that public opinion strongly supported the purchase of public open space on the two (2) sites to reduce shortfall (one point six four (1.64) hectares in Willagee) to provide other complimentary community and health services, and to protect remnant vegetation." This was from 150 attendees in a public forum and 630 responses from a community survey. What happened? https://www.dropbox.com/s/b/OMC-Minutes-15-August-2006.pdf

03.01.2022 Some photos of Juniper Reserve in Duncraig WA showing what the former Carawatha Primary School site could be converted into if it remains as public open space. A public open space for birds and wildlife, where children and animals can play, people can exercise, relax and enjoy nature.

02.01.2022 In this album, the trees marked red are being kept and any tree not marked is earmarked to be chopped down, including the large gum trees in the middle area.

02.01.2022 "In some cases, local government areas are undergoing losses in a similar location. For example, the areas with the greatest losses in green space across Perth lie in a band that stretches from inland Melville to coastal East Fremantle. In these locations, the traditional Aussie backyard is losing ground to densification and infill." 01.01.2022 Photos were taken Saturday 22 June 2019 showing a few trees with red tape (I assume to be kept) while most trees have no tape (I assume for removal). Not only is it shocking that this open space could be going into private hands from public open space, but the council has permitted, what it seems, is for most of the trees to be removed, instead of working the development around them. The large gum trees in the middle, these should have definitely been kept. It is environmenta...l vandalism at its worst removing these mature native trees. There are also no markers on the northing fence line, I assume all those trees might be going as well. Terrible that the community seems happy to lose open spaces like these forever.
