19.01.2022 There is so much more to good nutrition.. And the main thing is- DIVERSITY. The more diverse our diet (in fibrous foods- vegetables, fruit , seeds, nuts, legumes, beans) the more diverse our microbiome (the bugs in our gut) and that is because they all have a different food they prefer to feed on. So always think DIVERSITY. Get as many different colours into your salads as humanly possible.

14.01.2022 ORANGE = carotene = vitamin A = ANTI-OXIDANT = eye health, lungs, anti-cancer, anti-aging. Dont forget to eat the seeds. Wash them. Spread them on a baking sheet and bake for 20mins on 250 degrees. Toss with oil and spices and bake for another 20 mins. Pumpkin seeds are a great source of zinc.

05.01.2022 Marshmallow takes the pressure off Slippery Elm - FairWild week. At Goulds we try and preference using the herbs that are easy to grow over the ones that have s...ustainability concerns. Is this something you want us to do more of? Feel free to let us know when you next come in for a herbal mixture as this will help encourage us in this aim. One example... Slippery elm (Ulmus rubra) and Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) The inner bark of the Slippery Elm Tree is a popular remedy used to soothe the digestive tract and as a bulk laxative. Sadly, wild populations of this North American tree are under threat due to overharvest and disease. Goulds is currently able to source cultivated slippery elm. But cultivation efforts are not yet able to supply the huge global demand. Read more about this here https://unitedplantsavers.org/slippery-elm-in-the-herbal-m/ Marshmallow is a herb we can grow easily (see the photo of our abundant root harvest) and the powdered root works beautifully to soothe the upper digestive tract. So, we love using marshmallow in place of slippery elm for this purpose. We also find Tasmanian-grown ground flaxseeds a wonderful bulk laxative alternative. There are some situations when its harder to replace Slippery Elm. If you use this herb and want to explore botanical alternatives, talk to us and we can explore options with you.

04.01.2022 Hummus, especially home made, is such a great source of vegetarian protein as well as monosaturated fat with all that olive oil. A snack to celebrate.

04.01.2022 Thank you for all your support so far. Only 2 more weeks to go! https://chuffed.org/proje/help-us-to-fight-diabetes-in-fiji

04.01.2022 We spend ~25 years of our lives asleep. Often people go through phases of not sleeping well. Correcting your circadian rhythm takes commitment as it is often bad sleep hygiene which can drive disrupted sleep. There are a few things which can help: - No blue light exposure 1 hour before bed (phone, laptop, TV) - Melatonin supplements (prescribed by a GP) - Glycine, an amino acid which has the properties of a neurotransmitter and helps to reduce our core body temperature ... - Valarian and hops, sedative herbs. For a little bit of extra help, book in to see me.

04.01.2022 Tipping the Scales. Even though obesity is one of the leading public health issues in our society, our government has no obesity strategy. >>> How much is the food industry getting away with? ... "Tactics that were used by tobacco are being picked up by the big food industries". <<< How much is the government doing? The fact that Milo had a 4.5/5 health star rating, is a glaring insight how corrupt, unfair and wrong the current attempt at education awareness around healthy food intake is. https://iview.abc.net.au/progra/four-corners/NC1803H012S00

04.01.2022 If you are looking for a cow milk alternative, soy milk is the way to go. If fairs a lot higher in terms of protein and fibre than other milk alternatives. Additionally: "Soy milk contains large amounts of phytoestrogens a class of plant chemicals that mimic the body's natural oestrogen but on a much weaker scale.... Dr Crowe said despite concerns about phytoestrogens causing an increased risk of breast cancer and hyperthyroidism, clinical studies have consistently shown those fears are overstated. "Studies that have been done in humans do not point to any harmful effects," Dr Crowe said. On the contrary, there is research to suggest phytoestrogens may have a protective effect against some cancers." https://www.abc.net.au//almond-soy-coconut-milk-a/10793040
