24.01.2022 I’ve got my Surface 3 for the last few years, and it’s been running on various builds on the Windows Insider program. Since April however, it’s become extremely unstable and has had frequent lockups and Green Screens of Death (GSOD). I’ve tried to troubleshoot the issue, but it’s not been stable enough at times to do anything. So unstable has it been that I’ve resorted to pen and paper for note taking during meetings instead of OneNote. [ 158 more words ] http://www.sbsfaq.com/?p=4453

24.01.2022 I reported a few months back now about a pretty severe bug that affected QNAP NAS devices and it caused RAID corruption if you had a failed disk in it. In that post I mentioned also that I had heard other NAS users also hit by it and at least one user reporting Synology NAS units affected. I’ve still not played with Synology units, so don’t speak first hand about it. [ 359 more words ] http://www.sbsfaq.com/?p=4321

23.01.2022 I often use task manager and resource manager to get a better understanding of what is going on with the CPU and memory usage of a given EXE. However there is something better and that is Process Explorer. Process Explorer gives you far more detailed information around what is going on with a computer than either of those aforementioned tools. [ 64 more words ] http://www.sbsfaq.com/?p=4370

22.01.2022 You see it all over the place, in text based logs, windows event logs, everywhere. I’m talking about error codes such as 0x8007005. But what do they really mean and how can I find out more about them? You could try Google of course, but that might give you a heap or misdirected answers that don’t apply to your situation. Instead, let’s find out more about what the error code really means. [ 175 more words ] http://www.sbsfaq.com/?p=4351

13.01.2022 I’ve taken a little time recently to evaluate a few of the remote control software packages on the market so that I can cater for the needs of my family, friends, IT support work and also the growing number of computers at my church which I support. In my mainstream business, we use Kaseya for managing our clients needs and we’ve got over 5000 deployed agents with it. [ 1,317 more word ] http://www.sbsfaq.com/?p=4336

13.01.2022 I had a request recently from a CEO of a company. He wanted to be able to leave his computer running in his office and allow the screens to turn off WITHOUT the computer locking the screen. That is he was often in and out of his office, and he got tired of entering his password to unlock his computer every time he returned to it. [ 196 more words ] http://www.sbsfaq.com/?p=4423

12.01.2022 From the world of "this doesn't bloody make sense..."... We had configured a PPTP VPN on a server for a client. Tested it using their user accounts and the administrator account. Everything worked fine. Then the client rebooted their server after installing some software and found they could not VPN into it again. It just hung at the "Connecting..." screen. 11.01.2022 Another good list of things to consider with cloud storage.

11.01.2022 In the last 24 hours, two announcements slipped under the covers by Microsoft show that Microsoft really are not interested in partners at all. These announcements apply to both the Action Pack subscription, as well as the Silver and Gold reseller levels. All of these programs come with a yearly fee some of them the fee is in the multiple thousands of dollars a year. [ 593 more words ] http://www.sbsfaq.com/?p=4489

08.01.2022 Have you ever had the situation where memory is disappearing and you don’t know where it is being used? Which program is using the memory, and is it paged out to disk or in RAM? That’s where RAMMAP comes in. It’s a great utility from the Sysinternals Team at Microsoft. Here’s an example of how I’ve used RAMMAP to diagnose things. 06.01.2022 It's the last day of 2019 and everyone should be thinking about their New Years Resolutions. You know those commitments you make with the best intentions and then never keep? Except, this time, you can't ditch out on it. You simply MUST make this resolution stick and work towards it. The consequences are bad if you don't. To put it simply, you cannot keep using the same old few passwords on various sites. [ 526 more words ] http://www.sbsfaq.com/2020-new-years-resolutions-2-factor-/

05.01.2022 Often when investigating a problem, we need to see what a specific program is doing to the machine, or the registry, or accessing files etc. Process Monitor (also known as Procmon) is an awesome tool to be used for this. Procmon is a small exe file that you can download and run on a machine and it will show you as below, what every single exe is doing, it’s registry accesses, both sucessful and failed, it’s file access, reads/writes, even directory listings are shown. 03.01.2022 Many users offer remote access to their office for staff via permitting them to connect directly to the server over the RDP protocol via a port forward on port 3389 direct to a server or workstation. This is a major open door for which hackers can try brute force attacks on your systems and cause not only potential breach of your systems but also stability issues while they try to get in. 02.01.2022 It’s coming to light over the last 24 hours in mainstream media, that there’s been a super serious security flaw discovered in pretty much all Intel CPUs that power your computers, both home and office that were made in the last 10 years. The security flaw also affects Phones and even Apple Macs which is interesting. Computers that use an AMD CPU however are unaffected. [ 212 more words ] http://www.sbsfaq.com/?p=4395
