18.01.2022 Introducing MICHAEL NICHOLAS, Sunshine Coast painter ... Michael found more than just a new career when he was posted to Cunnamulla in the 1960s by the Queensland Police Force. He had emigrated from the UK as teenager, and worked in fields like mining before joining the police service. He had always drawn and painted, and the captivating outback landscape spurred him back to college to study art. Michael has been a successful professional artist since the 1970s including il...lustrating a book of Dorothea McKellar’s iconic poem My Country. He was also appointed as Government Artist in Residence at Girraween National Park NSW. And he has been commissioned to paint all the Queensland Premiers from 1860 to 1946 for Queensland Parliament House. Portraiture was a significant part of his work for many years, but it is to the vibrance and scenery of the outback which Michael returns for his paintings. Michael's depictions often contain cockatoos and brolgas within the landscape which bring them to life evoking not just the heat and beauty, but also the sounds of this immense place. In recent months, Michael has painted a stunning new collection for his exhibition Outback Revisited proving how strong his bond remains to this country. Now a resident of the Sunshine Coast hinterland Michael has held over 35 solo exhibitions and many group showings (including in San Francisco and Los Angeles) and paintings are to be found in public and private collections, major corporate collections in Australia and overseas, and in the Queensland Art Gallery, regional galleries and university collections. Rather fittingly he designed 'The Cunnamulla Fella' which stands proudly in bronze in Cunnamulla. Michael has recently returned from the outback and has created many new works. These are inspired by the ‘spiritual home of his art’. You can view Michael's work at Art on Cairncross at 3 Panorama Place, Maleny. 12.01.2022 Talk about a great idea in the wrong place. An iconic art gallery looking over the Glasshouse Mountains embracing the arts community and tourism would be much better. The Sunshine Coast Hinterland (the home of the visual arts on the Sunshine Coast) would be a far superior to this. This won't work!

05.01.2022 Congratulations Mark Tweedie for winning the Highly Commended award for the 2019 Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2019 Sunshine Coast Art Prize Judge, Alison Kubler said, Mark Tweedie’s painting is a beautiful commentary on the enduring relationship between photography and painting, and argues a relevance for figurative and narrative painting. The image is touching in its intimacy, intriguing in its obscurity too; a dreamlike vignette of another’s existence. You can see this work, ...with all other finalists and prize winners, until September 15.
