04.01.2022 Why is it so hard to talk about slavery? Stigma and shame. 11 million slaves enslaved to New World colonies. 62,000 South Sea Islanders enslaved to Australia. It’s uncomfortable and awkward, and we don’t know how to talk about it.... But consider that the Hebrew word ‘slave’ appears 1,000 times in the Old Testament and 150 times in Greek in the New Testament. Paul used the Greek word ‘doulos’ to open Philippians (Paul and Timothy, slaves of Jesus Christ) and many other instances in the NT as did Jesus. We’re used to thinking of ourselves as so many other metaphors servants, branches, sheep, joint heirs all images designed to reflect our relationship with Christ. Yet throughout the Bible, the Holy Spirit inspired the word doulos. What can happen to our view of our relationship with our Master when we recast ourselves as slaves? It’s a conversation that we, at Scarred Tree Indigenous Ministries started last Sunday night and are continuing this Sunday. If you join us, you will find imperfect individuals who seek to live continually in God’s presence. We’re also deeply aware that often, in our society, we are misunderstood. Individuals whose names ‘Minniecon’ and ‘Watego’ point to their enslaved ancestors and for whom doulos holds racial, as well as, spiritual meaning. As we explore God’s intentions for us, we share our sufferings and invite others, in this National Reconciliation Week, to share in them too. 03.01.2022 Aunty Sharon Minniecon is from the Meriam Mer language group from Ugar Island, in the Torres Strait. Aunty Sharon serves at St John's Glebe where she is Indige...nous Ministry Coordinator with Scarred Tree Indigenous Ministries, community worker and pastor in their emergency relief program. For the last 12 years she has also helped shape and promote the Gawura School for Indigenous children. Most of her life work has focused on women and children, to encourage and empower them to make positive change and achieve their goals and dreams. Due to the work of aunty Sharon several generations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have felt the love of Jesus. They have been heard, comforted, healed, educated and supported in many practical ways.
