24.01.2022 My Horticultural journey started more than twenty years ago working in a small rural town. I’ve always had an interest for the outdoors but my choice of study at university wasn’t always directly related to plants. An interest in environmental matters at the time brought me to my first real job, working in a native plant nursery specifically set up to provide for a conservation project. ... The physical nature of the work and the hands on learning seemed to suit my interests. Within a year I took over as supervisor and manager of the nursery. It was the growing aspect that really got me hooked. Being a part of the growing process was exciting and the procedure of collecting growing material, propagating and planting, provided different challenges and diversity of work. Over the years I’ve worked in a number of different environments each with unique plant related aspects. My favourite to date was working with people with disabilities which involved teaching horticultural skills for employment. I think I learnt as much as I taught, discovering people who had special abilities and learning needs. By working varied roles in the horticultural field it has really helped me gain a wide open perspective on the gardening spectrum. I have been lucky enough to encounter some amazing industry leaders who have passed on their knowledge to me. Combined with my own experiences they have helped shape and mould my learning. My learning of this amazing industry still continues and I look forward to providing a great garden service to those in need. If you’re passionate about your garden and need some guidance get in touch now so that we can continue the learning journey together. - Let's connect on social! 24.01.2022 It’s always nice to work in a garden that has amazing plant variety and this one has a lot to offer. What I really like is that you have to explore to see everything. In this space, the walk along the garden path is really necessary and the journey leads to fresh discoveries. ... It’s a welcome distraction from straight lines and mass plantings. Sure it’s nice having a tidy yard, but the real joy of a garden comes from the changes that take place. So if you appreciate variety in a dynamic landscape give us a call and we can help create an inspiring space. - Let's connect on social! 24.01.2022 This was a Pittosporum hedge I did just before lockdown. The client called me in to tidy the hedge and also another on the other side of the driveway. The first thing I noticed was the angle of the hedge, with the dominance of growth towards the top and a narrow base. Although it has a nice finish, technically this is not quite correct. ... It’s best to try and angle the hedge so that the widest part is at the base with it tapering towards the top. This way light will evenly reach all parts of the hedge leading to better overall growth. Without severely pruning, it would require major surgery to correct this hedge, something understandably the client was hesitant about. Very happy with the result, he only wished he had discovered us earlier. If you have a hedge that needs a trained eye to trim and tidy, give us a call now so we can sort it post lockdown. - Let's connect on social! 21.01.2022 After more than six weeks of lockdown and the arrival of Spring, I’m imagining some sites starting to look a little bit jungly. This was a job I did just before restrictions started, one that had been neglected for some time. It needed a lot of tidying and It really highlights the need to keep up maintenance. The Muehlenbeckia astonii I’m trimming can be a nightmare to cut especially when it has been left to grow wild like this one. ... Yet if maintained properly, it can have a very neat and tidy appearance. Regular light trimming is key and it can make this particular job relatively easy. After completion, the client was left with a feeling of relief, like she had been freed from a strangling mass of wild growth, something she had become used to for so long. If your garden has suddenly awoken during restrictions and needs taming, give us a call so we can organise a visit. - Let's connect on social! 21.01.2022 After coming out of a long lockdown period it has taken me a bit of time to adjust to this Spring weather. There’s blue skies but I’m still wearing a jacket. Melbourne is well known for its changeable weather and this last few weeks has been no exception.... Thermals seem almost a necessity in the morning, but by the afternoon I’m regretting that decision. Another challenge has been the compulsory wearing of masks. A lot of times the mask has come in handy especially during the hay fever season. On the other hand it’s also been a bit of nuisance, when I’ve needed to wear safety glasses with a mask, they tend to fog up. The head care that I’m wearing has helped solve this problem. Whatever the challenge, SceneIt gardens is ready for it. So if you have a garden problem we can help you solve it. Give us a call now! - Let's connect on social! 19.01.2022 It feels great to be back in the garden. Green screens and floors, blue skies and fresh air. Never have I been so glad to see uneven green carpets instead of polished wooden floors and fluffy green walls instead of flat white ones. It feels like a long time has passed during lockdown and it has. There’s lots to do and catch up on in the garden. ... We’re well into Spring now and a lot of the gardens are crying out to be fed. A haircut is needed badly, but it looks like the plants will be getting a trim before I do. Hope everyone is doing well in these difficult times. If you need help with controlling your garden or want to improve what you already have give us a call now. - Let's connect on social! 19.01.2022 If you want to get results sometimes you need to perform tasks that may seem daunting at the time. This is often the case when it comes to revitalising plants especially those that have been seriously neglected. It’s even harder if you can’t easily visualize the end result. This is also the reason why many plants end up in undesired states because action was taken too little too late. ... Sometimes drastic action is required and this is often a problem for many people especially when you add sentimental value to your garden. The thought of severely cutting back an ancient rhododendron or magnolia might be hard to accept, but sometimes it can also be worth it. If the plant is not performing, it is in the wrong location or doesn’t have the desired shape you’d like, then sometimes you have to sacrifice. Whether it means completely removing and replacing, or seriously adjusting past procedures. Lightly trimming back your favorite hedge in the hope that it will thicken up for instance, may not be the answer. It may require more severe pruning and this could mean sacrificing flowering, while making the hedge look unappealing for a length of time. If you have a task that you’ve been holding off or you’re not really sure about, give us a call so that we can help you understand the problem and better visualize the solution. - Let's connect on social! 18.01.2022 Good drainage is often one of the most important environmental requirements for healthy growing plants. This is essential if you want to ensure the long term vitality and success of your garden. Yet many existing properties or even new ones present fundamental drainage issues, whether because of the initial difficult soil location or excavation and compaction that took place during the building phase. ... Sometimes the ongoing failure of certain plants or even lawns could be a result of poor drainage. The effects may not be seen until plants are more established as sitting water can cause rotting of roots and can lead to bacterial and fungal diseases. After heavy rainfall or consistent irrigating you might notice pooling of water in certain areas of your property. This could indicate a possible drainage issue. If your property has a high amount of clay base this could also present serious issues to certain ornamental plant varieties. If you think you might have plants that could be suffering because of poor drainage give us a call so that we can help alleviate your problem to get your plants thriving. - Let's connect on social! 14.01.2022 Usually when you hear about long legs you would think of it as a compliment. Well, not the case when it comes to plants. Leggy plants are something you generally want to avoid. This is something I’ve encountered at many properties over the years. Plants that have either never seen secateurs or have been planted in dubious locations. ... Legginess in plants is a result of inadequate light and could be caused by numerous things. - shading from other trees or plants - by planting close to large structures, such as fences or buildings. Leggy plants not only look unappealing, but they are also vulnerable to wind damage. To avoid this problem make sure to allow space when planting. Think about the size the plant will grow to rather than what it is when you plant it. That way you can minimize overshadowing. Regular pruning is also recommended for many plants and a must if you want to extend the appeal of plants such as lavender. So if you have a long legs problem in your garden give us a call and we can get you sorted. - Let's connect on social! 11.01.2022 When it comes to planting in an existing garden, one of the things people fail to consider is the importance of competition from other plants. Already established plants can sometimes be the reason why new plants fail. Here’s some things to think about:... When planting new plants near established plants you are essentially invading their territory. The new plant will be competing directly for light, root space, nutrients and water. It’s important to realize some plants don’t handle competition so well. Roses for instance don’t like root disturbance from other plants and prefer their own space. There is a reason why roses have their own gardens. Established trees and shrubs don’t usually require as frequent watering as new plants, but they’ll happily drink the water you give them. By planting near already settled plants there’s always a chance those older roots will find their way to new water, fresh soil or compost that’s been added. So if your thinking about adding some plants in your garden and have encountered past failures, give us a call and we can ensure success. - Let's connect on social! 11.01.2022 When It comes to finding a suitable lawn alternative, lots of people choose artificial grass because they believe there is little or no maintenance required. Sure, you don’t have to mow or edge it like a real lawn, but that doesn’t mean you can simply walk away and enjoy the good life after it’s been installed. Here’s a few things to consider if you’re looking at installing artificial grass.... 1. They’re easy to clean right? Well, not always. Depending on the grass quality, using a leaf blower doesn’t always do the job. Leaves, soil, mulch and other plant debris can sometimes be difficult to remove and may require special equipment for a neat finish. 2. No more weeds, right? Wrong! Over time, organic matter will build up, creating an ideal propagating surface for any wind dispersed weed seeds. 3. To get the best out of the grass it’s recommended to spread silica sand over the surface to help keep the grass blades upright. The sand will need to be topped up and spread from time to time depending on the grass, usage and environmental conditions. So if you’re thinking of switching to artificial grass, be careful to consider your options. 05.01.2022 The use of ornaments and statues can be a great way to enhance your garden and help take it to another level. They can complement existing planting while adding another dimension of interest and decoration. A garden ornament can also help to create a point of focus. ... I wanted to brighten up this rather dull corner, surrounded by tall hedges with low light, this round garden bed presented an opportunity. We used a Tersane pedestal and Lady Anfora statue and surrounded them with hydrangeas and a border of liriopes. The client wanted a statue of reasonable size so that it could be viewed from various angles outside and from certain windows inside. It also needed to complement existing materials and sculptures. The light texture of the sandstone helps to bring this otherwise lost garden bed into focal view. 04.01.2022 Are you thinking of planting a hedge and don’t want to wait for it to grow? An instant hedge requires careful planning to ensure long term success. Once you have decided the plants you want here’s a few things to consider before planting. 1. Measure the length and decide the finished height you would like to have the hedge, so you can decide how many plants you will need.... 2. Before planting space the plants carefully. There should be enough distance between each root ball to allow for root development. 3. Don’t plant too close to boundaries so that you can maintain both sides without annoying the neighbours. 4. When planting small hedges, consider the proximity of other plants and lawns to allow for easier maintenance. 5. Try to buy larger grade plants than you need, so you can trim them back after planting for a better finished look. If you have the need for a hedge and would like some extra guidance give us a call and we can hedge you out. - Let's connect on social! 01.01.2022 I’m looking forward to working in the garden again. Catching up with existing clients and meeting new ones, tackling problems and facing challenges. Spring is well and truly here, days are getting longer and temperatures are slowly rising. Azaleas and magnolias are flowering, a reminder the growing season has started. Lots of tasks that Ive been looking forward to doing have been put on hold because of current restrictions. Leaving an already narrow window of oppo...rtunity even less time to complete important seasonal duties. This calls for fine tuned planning and organisation to make the most of the season when work resumes. Every property brings with it different challenges but there is also one common aspect, the outdoor environment. Having the chance to work in unique spaces is a reward in itself. I will definitely take this less for granted now because of the current situation. Does your garden need a spring clean?
