18.01.2022 Real-time prescription monitoring is coming are you ready? Researchers from the Curtin University School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences, in collaboration the Medicines and Poisons Regulation Branch, Department of Health, WA, are investigating the perceptions of Western Australian pharmacists regarding real-time prescription monitoring (RTPM). We invite you to have your say on how you would like to see RTPM work in your real world practice, how you feel about assisting ...with pain management and addressing situations involving patients at risk of opioid-related harm; and what additional educational resources and training you need to support your practice with the imminent implementation of RTPM. You can participate in this research if you are an AHPRA-registered pharmacist working in Western Australia in a role that involves patient care and/or direct face-to-face patient contact, and use a dispensing system as part of your role. We anticipate that it will take approximately 20 minutes to complete the questionnaire. When you are finished, you will be offered the opportunity to enter a prize draw for the chance to win one of four Coles-Myer vouchers. To find out more about the study and complete the questionnaire, please click here: https://curtin.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_datUJv4FlrFzuPX. If you wish to obtain further information or have questions about this study, or if you have any issues accessing the questionnaire, you are welcome to contact Dr Leanne Chalmers at [email protected] or on 08 9266 5062. Curtin University Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) has approved this study (HREC number HRE2020-0007). Should you wish to discuss the study with someone not directly involved, in particular, any matters concerning the conduct of the study or your rights as a participant, or you wish to make a confidential complaint, you may contact the Ethics Officer on (08) 9266 9223 or the Manager, Research Integrity on (08) 9266 7093 or email [email protected]. This Gold Medal honour has been presented to our top student for the past 50 years- the first was awarded to Judith Winzar in 1969 and is a highly regarded achievement. The list of past winners is on the Honour board in the Foyer of Building 308 on the Curtin campus. Giulia was also was top student in two of her 3 majors namely Advanced Medical Microbiology and Advanced Immunology. The Silver medal awarded to the runner up student was presented to Narada Kittikundamrongporn by Mr John Lown. 10.01.2022 Our focus on research: Professor Jeff Hughes has a wide range of research interests from pharmacy education and practice, to quality use of medicines and pharmacoviligance. His recent research has focused on such topics as the mechanism by which statins cause diabetes (Caparrs-Martn JA, et al. Statin therapy causes gut dysbiosis in mice through a PXR-dependent mechanism. Microbiome 2017;5(1), 95.) and their role in bacterial skin infections (Ko HHT, et al. In vitro antibact...erial effects of statins against bacterial pathogens causing skin infections. Europ J Clin Microbiol Infect Dis. 2018; 37(6):1125-35). Further, he has recently investigated the impact of cognitive impairment on pain assessment in the emergency department (Jones J, et al. Influence of cognitive impairment on pain assessment and management in the emergency department: A retrospective crosssectional study. Emerg Med Australas. 2019 Apr 5.). However, possibly his most significant research has centred around improving pain assessment in people who cannot verbalise their pain, leading the team that developed PainChek, a pain assessment system which includes a point-of-care App which utilises smart-automation and artificial intelligence to detect and quantify pain in this vulnerable population (Atee M, Hoti K, Hughes JD. A technical note on the PainChek system: a web portal and mobile medical device for assessing pain in people with dementia. Front Aging Neurosci 2018; 10: 117.)

06.01.2022 Can we borrow your taste buds? Can you help us to improve a nasal spray to assist children and adults? We are conducting a research study to improve the taste of a nasal spray containing local anaesthetic that is used routinely to numb the nose prior to nasal examination and minor procedures. We have developed some new formulations that we want to compare for taste with the current nasal spray product. That is where you come in. If you are 18 to 60 years old and a healthy adu...lt, you could assist us with tasting these new formulations. The study involves spraying the formulation onto your tongue, then answering some questions about the taste. The time required for testing is approximately 15 to 20 mins, each day for 4 days. A gift voucher will be provided for your attendance. For further information please contact Behin Sundara Raj on 0466934262 or [email protected] or Heather Benson on 92662338 or [email protected] This study has been approved by Curtin University Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC Project # 2019-0365)
