25.01.2022 HGC's cutting-edge eSports programme is a trail-blazer in the secondary school eSports tournament arena. Over the last two days we have held our Term 2 eSports ...tournament with teams competing in: Rocket League (Years 5-6), Fortnite (Years 7-11), Overwatch and Super Smash Bros. Students also enjoyed competing in: NBA 2019, Forza Racing Simulator, Just Dance and Nintendo Wii games. At HGC we understand that many teenagers are naturally drawn to gaming. For this reason, we have created an eSport programme that is designed to engage students, whilst also maintaining rigorous academic standards. Our programme has been designed to foster community and peer connections for our students in a highly engaging environment that teaches life-long skills that will help them both inside and outside of the classroom while having a lot of fun doing it! Did you know that HGC was the first school in Australia to introduce eSport as an academic subject? At HGC, students are transported from the solitary world of digital gaming into a team-centric environment where cooperation skills are paramount. As a team, students must create strategies to accomplish their mutual objectives, allowing some students to thrive as leaders among their group and others to discover a passion acting in a supporting role. By using eSports as a vehicle to meet students where their interests lie, we have found that this extends into a growing interest in STEAM related fields. The two are a perfect combination, with the technologies used to deliver and programme the gaming experience spilling into all other areas of STEAM. Ultimately, our eSports programme has helped to increase school engagement and classroom participation, as well as helping to boost student’s self-confidence and feelings of being an accepted and respected member of the school community. Our goal is to encourage our students to explore careers in STEAM by exposing them to different aspects of gaming programming, design, art, robotics, and much, much more! Thank you to our students for competing in a spirit of good natured competition and for showing a deep respect for the values of the College. Also, a huge 'THANK YOU' to our amazing staff for helping to make the tournament run smoothly, and more importantly, for having the vision to get this innovative programme up and running so successfully.
