22.01.2022 These ladies have been by my side for the longest time. Some since the beginning of my Belly Dance journey!! Over 23 years. We had this running joke when our school was called ‘Scimitar Moon’ to guess how quickly it would be mispronounced!! We had ‘Salami Moon, Skitmar Moon, Moon Dancing, Cara Moon’ you name it we’ve had it!! So even though we changed the business name our Monday performance troupe likes to call ourselves ‘Spoony Mooners’. Last night Nandita and Veronica gifted us our very own Spoony Moon matching necklaces. 19.01.2022 Have you met the divine Miss Em? @emlea_bd is one of our protégé teachers and has bewitched many an audience that has had the privilege of watching her. She is a member of the Belly Dance Collective teacher team. We sat down to chat with her about all things Belly Dance....... How long have you been dancing: I have been dancing for 5 and a half years now, beginning in Raqs Sharqi/cabaret, dipping my toes in Gypsy Caravan and finding great love in Transnational Fusion. Dance ...Highlights: I think one of my biggest highlights would have to be travelling with my best friend to Portland, Oregon to study the 8 elements of belly dance program with one of absolute idols, Rachel Brice. The lessons I learned there have made such a huge difference to my dance and the theory of practice for me. Interests/special abilities: I specialise in transnational fusion dance, however I’m loving to focus on use props especially the Kamelia shorty fan and veils to tap into the softer side of fusion. Soft and sensual is a side that most often comes out in my dance. Dance heroes: I have so many dance heroes, oh my goodness! Obviously Rachel Brice, but also Ashley Lopez, Mardi Love, Zoe Jakes, Mira Betz the list could probably go on forever. Both Cara and Jordan are major heroes to me also, because without them, I absolutely would not be where I am and they’ve been a constant source of inspiration to me. Future goals: I’m keen to get dancing and making some progress again. It’s been a rough year and dance hasn’t been a top priority but I think in the not so distant future, my major goal will be making dance a priority and part of my daily routine. Why you love sharing our dance: Belly Dance has made such an enormous difference to my life and I love that I can share that with others through teaching and performing. 14.01.2022 Meet the Belly Dance Collective Team!! Most of you will need no introduction to the incredible Natasha Enright - Belly Dancer! She has been a part of the Belly Dance community here in Townsville for over 13 years and is known for her incredible performances. She is an accomplished dancer, teacher and choreographer and we are so blessed to have her as a part of our family. Length of time dancing: almost 13 years ... Dance highlights: choreographing and performing ‘Castle’ a group sword balancing routine. Your interests/specialities: Sword, Veil, Fan Veil and Raqs al Assaya (Cane Dance). Your dance heroes: Ashlee Lopez at the moment and of course Cara. Any goals you have your happy to share: I am working on a possible new group choreo still early days on that, still deciding on what it’s telling me. Why you love sharing our dance/teaching: I guess when something really makes you happy you want to share it with others for me it one of the things I enjoy the most.

10.01.2022 ON THIS DAY IN BELLY DANCE HISTORY. On November 17, 1869, the Suez Canal opened, with a celebration that featured a performance by the famous Egyptian dancer Sh...ooq. One of the audience members was the French Empress Eugénie. In the 1820's and 1830's, dancers were banned from Cairo, and most went to live in Upper Egypt. In the 1860's, they were allowed to return. Shooq was the first to achieve fame once they returned. She was the only dancer the Viceroy (the head of the Egyptian government under the Ottoman empire) would allow to perform at his parties.
