21.01.2022 Bariatric surgery is emerging as a powerful weapon against severe obesity and type 2 diabetes. For many people living with diabetes, losing weight is an important strategy for improving health and quality of life. When repeated attempts at healthy eating and regular exercise aren't enough for weight loss, bariatric surgery, otherwise known as weight loss surgery, may be an option. When it comes to diabetes, bariatric surgery is recognised by the australian diabetic society... as the most effective treatment for people who suffer with obesity and have difficulty keeping blood glucose levels in target range. So why does someone with diabetes want to have bariatric surgery? The bottom line is to lose weight to improve blood glucose levels. Weight loss reduces insulin resistance in the body, a key component of type 2 diabetes. After surgery, they will be able to reduce or even come off medications for diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol. These levels can improve drastically because of the effects of surgery. Up to three out of four people will have blood glucose levels in the normal range without needing medication after WLS. It is very important however to understand that Bariatric surgery will not cure type 2 diabetes. It may however help people to reduce or eliminate medications for diabetes and obtain remission from diabetes. #weightloss #surgery #diet #support #ongoing #heretohelp #lifestyle #newlife #journey #healthy #nutrition #vitamins #shakes #drbaxter #buderimprivatehospital #gastricsleeve #gastricbypass #gastricsleevesurgery #lapband #iamabariatricpatient #bariatricpatient #baxtersbaricrew #progressoverperfection #wlssupport #wlsaustralia

21.01.2022 Repost: @the_bariatric_dietitian The darker the colour the more nutrition! When portions are small it’s important to make every mouthful count ... Dark coloured fruits and vegetables have high levels of Vitamin C , polyphenols , flavonoids and antioxidants . These all help fight diseases including heart disease , many types of cancers, they help fight dementia and Alzheimer’s as well as reducing inflammation which is essential for maintaining health and wellbeing. 19.01.2022 An Omega-Loop Gastric bypass is a procedure (also known as a Mini-Bypass) is a procedure where the stomach is divided into two sections, creating a smaller stomach pouch, then the first part of the small intestine is bypassed, reducing the amount that can be absorbed. 17.01.2022 Tomorrow is October, which means it is breast cancer awareness month. Breast cancer remains the most common cancer among Australian women (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer). Survival rates continue to improve in Australia with 89 out of every 100 women diagnosed with invasive breast cancer now surviving five or more years beyond diagnosis. Take the time this month to find out what you need to know about breast awareness and share this important information with your ...family, friends and colleagues. Finding breast cancer early provides the best chance of surviving the disease. Remember you don’t need to be an expert or use a special technique to check your breasts. Changes to look for include: - new lump or lumpiness, especially if it's only in one breast - change in the size or shape of your breast - change to the nipple, such as crusting, ulcer, redness or inversion - nipple discharge that occurs without squeezing - change in the skin of your breast such as redness or dimpling an unusual pain that doesn't go away. Most changes aren’t due to breast cancer but it’s important to see your doctor without delay if you notice any of these changes. #October #breastcancer #breastcancerawareness #getitchecked See more

02.01.2022 MEAL PREP SUNDAY! Warm up your winter nights and take away the chill with this hearty pea and ham soup from @chefrickstein 75g unsalted butter 225g onions, roughly chopped... 2 tbs plain flour 900g frozen or fresh peas Ham stock 1 small (800g-1kg) smoked ham hock 1 large onion, quartered 2 large carrots, halved 3 celery stalks, thickly sliced 3 bay leaves 1/2 tsp black peppercorns Pinch of crushed dried chillies 1. For the stock, put all the ingredients in a large saucepan with 2 litres (8 cups) water and bring to the boil, skimming off the scum as it rises to the surface. Reduce the heat to medium-low and leave to simmer, uncovered, for 1 hour. 2. Strain, discarding vegetables but reserving hock. You want 1.5 litres (6 cups) stock in total, so if you have slightly more, return to a clean pan and simmer until reduced to the required amount. 3. Melt the butter in a large saucepan over medium-low heat, add the onion and cook gently for about 10 minutes or until soft but not browned. Stir in the flour and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Gradually add stock, then increase heat to medium-high and bring to the boil. Add the peas, return to the boil and simmer over medium-low heat for 3 minutes or until peas are tender. Meanwhile, skin the ham hock, then remove the meat from the bone and chop into small pieces. 5. Remove the soup from the heat and leave to cool slightly, then blend with a stick blender until smooth (or in a blender in batches, then return to the pan). Stir in the ham and season with freshly ground black pepper. Warm through over low heat, then serve in warmed soup bowls. #scmwlc #recipe #soup #bariatriceats #recipeoftheweek #wlsfamily #wlseats #wlscommunity #wlsfood #bariatric #bariatriceats #bariatricfood #wlsjourney #wlssupport #wlsaustralia #wlslife #bariatricsurgery #bariatriclife #gastricbypass #gastricsleeve #wlsinspiration #lifeafterwls #sleevegastrectomy #rny #bypass #vsgeats #vsgsupport #sleevelife #wlstransformation #rnyeats #rnyjourney

01.01.2022 PRE-SURGERY DIET The pre-surgery diet is the first step in your bariatric journey. The aim is not for weight loss, but to prepare you for surgery by shrinking the liver so that surgery will be safer. Generally you will follow the pre-surgery diet for 10 - 14 days and consists of 2 meal replacement shakes, meals/snacks from the free vegetable list and 1 evening meal containing protein. ... A typical day could look something like this: Breakfast - Shake + free vegetables (mushrooms, tomatoes, onion & spinach) Snack - Diet yogurt Lunch - Shake + Free vegetables (try a fresh salad with lemon juice) Snack - fruit or 10 almonds Dinner - 100 - 120g lean meat (chicken, fish, eggs) with free vegetables. Drink plenty of water (aim for 2L) and have some Benefibre or Metamucil handy for extra fibre support. We recommend @formulite_australia shakes for the pre-surgery diet, however, there are other alternatives that can be used. The pre-surgery diet can be tough and take some adjusting. The trick is to be prepared and creative. Think cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, beetroot slaw. It is 14 days to set you up for a better future. Our dieticians are here to help you and will go over each stage in great detail. #preop #presurgery #liquiddiet #shakes #mealreplacement #gastricsleeve #gastricbypass #lapband #scmwlc #heretohelp #sunshinecoastweightloss #weightlosssurgery #wls #wlscommunity #weightloss #sunshinecoast #onegoaloneteam #formulite #optifast See more
