22.01.2022 Smooth lines in the South Pacific. A Humpback whale rolling in the deep

17.01.2022 The largest fish in the Ocean and a gentle giant. I’m always amazed that often the largest creatures feed upon the smallest, whale sharks , mantas and the baleen whales some are the largest animals on the planet, yet they feed upon some of the tiniest -plankton and krill. I’m deeply disturbed by the harvesting of huge amounts of krill in the southern oceans for human consumption . These tiny plankton are the base of the ocean food cycle, providing food for a myriad of species from tiny fish to the mighty blue whale. As if the oceans under under enough pressure already !

16.01.2022 Today was exceptional, Nuthungalli (Julian Rocks )turned on with 25 m viz incredible schools of cownose rays , leopard sharks and more. Heres a quick midnight edit of a mild fever of rays, more to come :) now back to sleep ....

16.01.2022 Caught in the tractor beam of a humpback whale @tay_mckeown swims for the surface before she is inhaled into cetacean dimensional space. Hope everyone’s having a magical Sunday

16.01.2022 Beautiful autumn conditions at the moment, perfect for learning to Freedive ! I am running weekly courses and fun dives in Byron and the Gold Coast. Message me for details :)

16.01.2022 Blue whale in an almost vertical descent into the depths to feed at a depth of a few hundred metres. During a dive the whales heart rate is reduced to 1-2 beats per minute !! Typically a feeding dive will last around 8 minutes before surfacing. This individual is a Pygmy Blue whale , maxing out at around 25 metres , not quite as large as the Antarctic blue at an incredible 33+!

15.01.2022 Whale tales This Humpback was sleeping nose down and tail up with it’s fluke in this iconic pose

13.01.2022 Cleared for take off ! Take us outta here maximum warp a humpback whale spreads her generous wings otherwise known as pectoral fins but on humpback their pectorals are around a third of their body length... so a 15 m whale will have at least a 12m wingspan. Very similar proportion to things that fly

12.01.2022 Incoming blue torpedo The enigmatic yet sometimes shy and mysterious Pygmy Blue whale. Join me in Sri Lanka this March/April for Blue whales and much much more ! Do me for details

10.01.2022 One of the most incredible sunrises of my life! Crystal clear water, Freediver @yogawithkris and a curious Blue Whale illuminated by the light of a new day. I am so grateful for all the wonderful experiences and encounters in my life and still I hunger for more !!

09.01.2022 Friends with fins. The Grey nurse shark or sand tiger once populated reefs and headlands all along Australia’s East coast. Overfishing depleted the population until only hundreds were left . The Grey nurse can be seen in a handful of protected sites along the coast , but they are still hanging by a thread ... usually a fishing line or entangled in commercial fishing gear or in the archaic beach shark meshing program . The critical habitat zones have an umbrella effect for other critically endangered species such as the Black Cod and the Giant Queensland groper. Unfortunately the Australian govt is winding back marine protected areas in a time we should be increasing no take zone. It is probable that if we don’t act now we will see our oceans turn into dead zones within our lifetime. Please watch @seaspiracy and support @envoyfilm

08.01.2022 Freedive champion @ryuzoshinomiya swims with a trio of humpback beauties in the South Pacific. Can’t wait to experience life moments like this again !!!
