24.01.2022 The challenge is on ...Scouts UK Endeavour ESU has done the hard work, we just need to find a suitable airframe to get started. Back in February 2019 Endeavour ESU (Wiltshire North) were given the option to take over the old air frame of a two seater glider languishing at the back of the gliding club hangar at Aston Down. A small team looked at the air frame to work out whether it could still be converted into a simulator and decided that it was worth a try. In October/Novemb...er 2019 we were fortunate to receive grants from Wiltshire Councils Chippenham Area Board and the Scout Associations WT Taylor Fund. Ausculta Ltd provided the final funding we needed. A small team has worked really hard over the last 7 months on converting the old glider airframe into 2 simulators. The front simulator is complete and operational. We made our first real flights last Thursday, the 2nd will be fully operational on Wednesday after more 3D printing filament arrives. Creating this simulator was a very complex and demanding task for the @explorers, but definitely worth it. Video summary of the conversion: https://youtu.be/7cL6pk13TtY. #scoutingathome #STEMinAction #AdventureInFlight Scouts Victoria

22.01.2022 HOW ACCURATE IS YOUR GPS? By Alex Mudryk https://360.here.com/australia-is-a-difficult-continent-to- The tectonic plate under Australia is the fastest moving in the world. How can we be certain that Australian GPS systems will remain accurate and up-to-date? The Land Down Under seems to... be a difficult continent to pin down these days especially with GPS technology. Thats because satellite GPS systems measure geographical positions based on longitude and latitude, which are fixed and do not change with the movement of continents. Indeed, all continents drift at various speed, but Australia seems to be winning the race by drifting at around 70 mm per year. While the rest of the world has been diligently making adjustments in order to keep up with the GPS grid, Australia has not made any adjustments since 1994. For the past 25 years, the continent has moved about 1.8 meters to the north.

17.01.2022 Gone but not forgotten. On 22 July 2020 VH-OEJ (Wunala) departed Sydney for its final flight to Mojave after a short stay in Los Angles. After making a scenic departure over Sydney and a low pass over the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society (HARS) in Wollongong where sister aircraft VH-OJA (City of Canberra) is on display, QF7474 turned east over the Tasman Sea to draw Qantas iconic kangaroo. Measuring 275 km east-west and 250 km north-south, the kangaroo took sligh...tly less than 90 minutes to complete. When finished, VH-OEJ climbed to cruising altitude for the last time and headed out over the Pacific Ocean towards Los Angeles. 11.01.2022 On July 19, 2013, NASA spacecraft got not one but two rare and unique views of Earth from opposite ends of the solar system. While exploring Saturn, NASAs Cassini spacecraft took an image of Earth from a distance of about 1.45 billion kilometres away. NASAs MESSENGER spacecraft was 98 million kilometres from Earth, in orbit around Mercury. The Cassini view is the third-ever image of Earth from the outer solar system. #scoutingathome #STEMinAction #AdventureInFlight

05.01.2022 The first Australian to fly - On 12 November 1894, Lawrence Hargrave attached himself to a train of tandem box-kites. On the day of his historic flight, Hargrave and James Swain, his property caretaker, moored a train of four box kites to two sandbags in the dunes of Stanwell Park beach. Suspended beneath the kites, Hargrave carried instruments to measure wind speed and the angle of his anchor line. He rose 15 metres in a wind speed of 34 kilometres per hour. But it was his ...discoveries in aerodynamics and mechanical engineering that forever changed the course of aviation. He went on to discover that a curved wing surface gave twice the lift of a flat one, and his development of rotary engines would power aircraft for the next 25 years. His contributions to aviation earned him a place on the (old) Australian $20 note and recognition worldwide. #STEM #AviationInFlight #STEMinAction
