21.01.2022 Tolerance is an act of humanity, which we must nurture and enact each in own lives every day, to rejoice in the diversity that makes us strong and the values that bring us together. UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay

21.01.2022 When we explore our self-defeating behaviors, we get to know that all behaviors serve a purpose. The language we use to describe ourselves can be shaming & pathologising when we use labels like toxic instead of digging deeper at the disempowerment we are deeply trying to avoid through our behaviors. When we experience disempowerment in our early attachments, we learn to do everything in our power to avoid ever experiencing disempowerment again. This means engaging in self-protective behaviors, often at the cost of our relationships. Each time, we re-enact & further our sense of not belonging through the isolation we create. There is a major shift that happens when we take a look at our behaviors and get to know the pain they are carrying.

21.01.2022 Social health is our ability to form and maintain meaningful relationships, and it's critical for our quality of life. Spending time with family, checking in on mates, and connecting with your community might not seem so important in the grand scheme of things, but it has a huge impact on our physical and mental health. Whether it's through organised activities or groups, or just spending quality time with the people close to you. Phone, email and chatting online can h...elp keep you connected, even if you can’t get out in person. This Men’s Health Week (June 14 to 20) we’re encouraging men to make sure they have a team to support their social health. See more

20.01.2022 Today is World Mental Health Day! 1 in 5 Australians are affected by mental illness annually, yet many don’t seek help because of stigma it is time to change this! This day is a wonderful opportunity to come together to support education, awareness and advocacy of mental illnesses. We ask our community to continue to challenge perceptions about mental illness and encourage everyone to look at mental health in a more positive light, in an effort to reduce stigma and ma...ke way for more people to seek the help and support they deserve. While events and get-togethers remain more restricted than usual, there are still so many ways to celebrate and bring awareness (here are 8 ideas): 1. Contact 3 friends to check in on the highs and lows of their week. 2. Donate your time, resources or money to local business or charities that support mental health. 3. Schedule a meet-up with a family member or friend to participate in an activity together that makes them feel calm or happy. 4. Take some time to research mental health online and brainstorm how you can be an advocate in your family, friendship group or workplace. 5. Consult with your workplace to implement activities that encourage mental wellness, be creative and open-minded. 6. Write a list of activities that make you feel safe and calm, actively schedule them into your week as often as possible. 7. Take a walk with your partner, best friend or someone close to you and use this time to practice active listening. 8. Imagine someone special to you. Now, tell that person you are proud of them and what you love most about their character. (Do this often).

18.01.2022 MEN'S MENTAL HEALTH WEEK It's important to include health and medical professionals on your team. They can support you to maintain your wellbeing by checking in on your physical and mental health regularly and stopping small problems before they get bigger. If something does go wrong with your health, already having medical professionals on your team can help make managing these challenging times a bit easier.... Who? Depending on what’s happening in your life you’ll need certain people, services, and information on your team at different times. We suggest you include a doctor you trust and feel comfortable with on your team, throughout your life. Depending on your health and wellbeing goals and needs you can also include: Nurses (if you have diabetes you may see a diabetes nurse more than the GP) Dentist Pharmacists Optometrists Audiologists Allied health services, such as physios, dietitians, and podiatrists Mental health professionals and services such as counsellors, psychologists, psychiatrists Aboriginal Health workers / practitioners Other medical specialists You don’t need all of these and there are lots of other health and medical professionals who could be part of your team depending on your needs. How? You can find health and medical professionals by: Asking people you know (and trust) Getting a referral from your GP Using Healthy Male's 'Find a doctor' search function Visiting Health Direct See more

18.01.2022 On Saturday 10th October 2020, we celebrated our Annual Art Exhibition. Our theme this year was Metamorphosis - the transition from a cocoon to a butterfly which is a powerful symbol of transition for all of our patients. Art heals: Art therapy is a specialised area of mental health that uses art materials and the creative process to explore emotions, reduce anxiety, increase self-esteem and resolve psychological conflicts. Art is a form of visual communication when talk th...erapy is too difficult. Art finds your voice: Art therapy empowers and gives a voice to those who have been silenced. Creating art allows your mind to be in a safe place while it contemplates tough issues you are dealing with. It’s a different way of sharing. Sometimes verbal expression is the hardest thing to do. Making art gathers the words you want to say. You don’t need to be Picasso: The activity of creating art is in itself the transformation towards change. It is a way to achieve personal insight as well as healing. There is no need to be afraid of expressing yourself through art. The focus is on the process and inner experience rather than the end product. Enjoy some of the photos from our Art Exhibition and thank you to our wonderful patients for creating wonderful and inspiring art.

18.01.2022 Today is the start of MEN'S MENTAL HEALTH WEEK! Why is Australian male health so in need of attention? Why work on men's health? Good question!... Because the health status of males in most countries, including Australia, is generally poorer than that of females. More males die at every stages through the life course, more males have accidents, more males take their own lives and more males suffer from lifestyle-related health conditions than females at the same age. Meanwhile, men are less frequent visitors to general practitioners, and the perception is that they don't care about health or that health services are not well-prepared to interact with men effectively. But that's not what Men's Health Week is about! Men's Health Week was started in the United States by the US Congress in 1994 to heighten awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys. In Australia, there were small and localised Men's Health Week events in Victoria and then in New South Wales from about 2000 onwards. In Australia, Men's Health Week provides a platform for challenging and debating key issues in men's health and to raise the profile of men, their health outcomes and health needs around the country. It is as much as week of celebration and engagement of men with a serving of health on the side! Make sure you tag a special male in your life and let him know that you are here for him!

16.01.2022 This Men’s Health Week (June 14 to 20) we’re encouraging men to make sure they have a team to support their physical, mental and social health. A team is a group of people who perform collective tasks to work toward accomplishing a common mission or specific objective. Some teams have a limited life, for example, a healthcare team may come together to address a specific health concern, a sporting team may come together to play sport, or a work team may together to deliver ...a project. Your team is there to support you and get you across the line. They have your back, they can build you up, they will be there for the good times and the tough times. You're the central part of your team, and you can also be part of other teams. Most importantly they are YOUR team. You choose who is best to support you and when. See more

14.01.2022 We usually say you’ll figure it out as a way to encourage someone. It’s nice and well intentioned, but it cuts the conversation off. If you have the time and want to help someone figure something out, here are some questions you can ask. Any other questions that are helpful for you?... PS. If you don’t have the time/space/energy it’s ok to say that you can’t help, that you’re confident they’ll be able to work through it with the right help, or point them in the direction of other resources. You can also ask yourself these questions. Note: the information shared is only as a guide. Everyone’s experience is unique so some strategies/tools might not be relevant to your specific situation. If you feel you may require additional support please contact us on 1800 250 000. Please take care of your mind and body.

14.01.2022 I knew I was healing when: * you no longer equated love with intensity & drama * you no longer make others’ limitations a reflection of my worthiness and, * you no longer prioritise one-sided friendships.... When did you know you were healing?

08.01.2022 In this post, we wanted to highlight what mental health treatment looks like. We often think it is either medication or therapy. These interventions are effective and preferred in severe cases of psychological distress. However, there are various other ways we can take care of our mental health (especially in the form of preventative measures from it becoming a mental health condition). If you have tried any of the above to improve your mental health (including medication and... therapy), we’d love to learn about your experience in the comments below. We are sure there are many others who will benefit from it as well Note: the information shared is only as a guide. Everyone’s experience is unique so some strategies/tools might not be relevant to your specific situation. If you feel you may require additional support please contact us on 1800 250 000. Please take care of your mind and body.

03.01.2022 Alongside Beyond Blue, the SCP team welcomes the start of Anxiety and Depression Awareness Month. This initiative invites all Australians to work together to break down negative stigmas associated with anxiety and depression. According to Beyond Blue's research, community awareness of anxiety and depression has grown over the past decade, however, stigma associated with these common illnesses remains high. As a result, many people are too embarrassed or ashamed to seek help and don’t get the treatment they need. It is time to change this, together! If you or someone you know needs extra support, do not hesitate to visit the South Coast Private Hospital website or beyondblue.org.au for helpful resources and services.
