24.01.2022 NAIDOC Week is about taking time to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Over recent months we've been continuing the process of, where we can, adding an acknowledgement to the traditional owners for each dive site in our database. Working from the west to the east of Victoria, this truly ancient country includes the coastline and seas of the following five traditional owner groups: * Gunditjmara people... * Eastern Maar people * Wathaurong (Wadda-Warrung) people * Boon Wurrung (Bunurong) people * Gunaikurnai people We pay respect to their Ancestors and their Elders, past, present and emerging.

24.01.2022 If you want to shoot it like an SLR with dedicated lenses and ports, but are on a limited budget, then this is the camera, housing, lens and port combination you need. * Olympus PEN E-PL10 Mirrorless Camera > from a camera store * AOI Olympus E-PL9 and E-PL10 Underwater Housing > https://bit.ly/2JYqWRn... Professional Lens Package for PEN Housings This setup will shoot the widest of wide-angle and split shots, and the tiniest of the tiny macro. The Panasonic 8mm fisheye lens will match the 180-degree angle of coverage that can be had from a fisheye lens on an SLR. The Olympus 60mm Lens with its razor-sharp optics, fast focus, and super macro range can do a 1:1 reproduction ratio without any additional lenses. Add on a wet macro lens for even more magnification to shoot the smallest critters in the ocean. Wide Angle Lens & Parts * Panasonic Lumix G Micro 4/3 FISHEYE 8mm f/3.5 Lens > from a camera store * AOI DLP-06 Dome Port > https://bit.ly/2Ivp9Ti Macro Lens & Parts * Olympus M. 22.01.2022 Top notch advice from our friends at Backscatter.

21.01.2022 Back in the 1800s, quarantine was handled differently. Ships anchored off the Quarantine Station at Point Nepean and people waited out their time in isolation. The artefacts discarded overboard from the ships make this an interesting dive dive. See https://www.scubadoctor.com.au/divesite.htm

19.01.2022 Melbourne has some amazing dive sites that are often overlooked by local divers. One example is Lonsdale Arches. Yes, you may have dived there on your Open Water Course, or sometime shortly thereafter, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't go back there again and again. The swim-throughs and arches are awesome, and they provide heaps of shelter for the constantly changing marine life that feeds in this nutrient-rich environment. For more information, please see https://www.scubadoctor.com.au/divesite.htm Redboats are going there this Saturday. Book on here > https://secure.netbookings.com.au/tourism/1934/viewtours

19.01.2022 We’re giving you the chance to have your say on plans to upgrade the Cowes boat ramp. We’ve commissioned concept designs for the Anderson Road ramp and we’re ho...lding a drop-in session to share the plans and collect feedback from local boaters. We’ll be at the Cowes Yacht Club next Wednesday (July 14) from 4.30 to 6.30pm and we’d love you to come on down to have a chat and view the plans. The designs have been developed by experienced coastal engineers and address ways to better manage sand build up at the ramp. If you can’t get along to the session you’ll be able to view the plans and provide your feedback online. 19.01.2022 Wow! It's one thing to pat sharks when they come to play with you, but removing hooks is a whole new level...

19.01.2022 No-one likes being cold in the water, especially if it cuts a dive short. It's time to start thinking about your drysuit, wetsuit, base layers, and undergarments so you can stay diving warmer for longer. The comprehensive Fourth Element range of options we have available has awesome solutions for you. See https://bit.ly/3iNMImO

18.01.2022 Scuba diving has been around since the mid 1940s and a lot of its early popularity is thanks to vintage diving TV shows. The underwater world was huge in the 1950s and 1960s and TV shows inspired a generation to get in the water and explore. After the 1970s the diving shows dried up a bit. Here are two we remember well and revisit occasionally... Sea Hunt - Filmed in black and white from 1958 to 1961, Sea Hunt had four seasons with a total off 155 episodes that followed Lloyd... Bridges as former US Navy Frogman Mike Nelson. It was popular for decades afterwards. The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau - Jacques Cousteau's documentary series showed the world all sorts of underwater life. Debuting in 1966 and finishing in 1976, the 36 episodes show Cousteau and his crew sailing the Calypso around the world exploring and looking for new species. Are there TV shows other than these that inspired you to get into diving?

18.01.2022 Those of us who have a passion for the underwater world love to share that passion with others. We love to tell of the beauty, of the excitement and all the weird and wonderful things we encounter along our underwater journey. But we're all perhaps a little guilty of showing a false view of our modern day oceans. We doubt there is a single diver out there who hasn't come across some form of trash during a dive, and although it's not the most photogenic subject, and perhaps no...t what you've waited months to come and see, maybe as an underwater photographer or videographer should try shoot some trash. We believe we have a duty to educate and inspire those who live in the Instagram beauty-bubble, and to encourage the every day diver to consider their impact in every little way. Shooting for conservation doesn't bring instant gratification. It's the later impact that you have to strive to achieve that will make the biggest change and bring about the biggest sense of accomplishment. And that impact is worth pursuing. Never underestimate the impact your images can make, in the right hands, for the right cause.

17.01.2022 Maxwel Hohn has spent the last four years shooting in the freshwater lakes of British Columbia to produce this amazing look at the daily migration of the Western Toad Tadpole. Please take a few minutes and check out his spectacular work!

17.01.2022 We've added "Boon Wurrung Country" to our address details on our website. We're still trying to find out if there is a traditional name for Rye.

17.01.2022 Time to take advantage of good diving weather like this diver. We're open today, 7:30 am to 5 pm. Please drop by the dive shop for an air fill, or just to catch up. @matt_harrington74 on Instagram

17.01.2022 The Control Area in place to manage abalone disease in the south-west has been updated and now extends past the western edge of Bridgewater Bay. The extension... is only about one kilometre west to allow a small buffer from the new detection sites. The Control Area now spans from about a kilometre west of Cape Bridgewater Lookout in the west to Cape Grant in the east. Boating, diving and fishing activities can continue in Portland and Discovery Bay, as there are still no detections east of Cape Grant. Please note, there is a Fisheries Notice in place with restrictions near Narrawong. Please see vfa.vic.gov.au for more information. Fishing and boating restrictions remain in place in the Control Area. Please continue to practice good boat hygiene. Thank you to everyone in the community, fishers and industry for your ongoing support of this response, doing the right thing and following the restrictions. Check out the new map online or for more details about the CA agriculture.vic.gov.au/abalone

16.01.2022 A great tutorial on shooting macro with the Olympus PEN E-PL10 from our friends at Backscatter.

15.01.2022 The Apeks dSMB 1.4M is a decent size, closed-cell delayed Surface Marker Buoy with one of the first true oral inflation valves. Most dSMBs today have an inflation valve similar to your BCD but most divers orally inflate their dSMB to maintain buoyancy. The valves on most dSMBs can sometimes be tricky to orally inflate so Apeks fitted a valve specifically for orally inflating Buy Now > http://bit.ly/3iREThk

13.01.2022 CALLING ALL SPIDER CRAB FANS! TIME IS RUNNING OUT to submit your support letters to the Public Consultation on what should happen to our iconic, world-renowned ...Australian Great Spider Crabs during their annual moulting aggregations (they clearly shouldn't be harvested during the most vulnerable stage of their life-cycle, connected to their breeding cycle!) PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR LETTERS ASAP sharing your thoughts on why the spider crabs should be safeguarded and requesting a No-Take Season instead of a 'bag limit reduction' (which only further endorses and promotes targeting them when they are moulting!) 08.01.2022 No Rye Schoolies Week 2020! Officially, there is no Rye Schoolies Week 2020 due to Covid-19. Unofficially, many hundreds of schoolies are still likely to come into the area. With interstate travel restrictions and difficulties, there could be potentially more attendance in Rye. Because of the school exams finishing later this year, gatherings for Rye Schoolies Week are expected to happen from Saturday 5th to 12th December 2020. However, the reality is schoolies will probably ...start arriving en masse from tomorrow, Friday 27th November 2020. The car parking in front of Rye Pier will be CLOSED from 3 p.m. each day from Saturday 5th to 12th December 2020. This will limit your ability to dive at Rye Pier during this period.

06.01.2022 If you're feeling the cold this winter try cuttling up with a #cuttlefish! Despite their name, cuttlefish are not fish but intelligent invertebrates related to ...the octopus, squid, and nautilus. They may be just on of the world's most unique marine animals! They can count, exert self-control, and have numerous wily tactics to evade predators, including creating their own body double from a cloud of ink. Another quirk of the cuttlefish is their greenish-blue blood, because instead of using hemoglobin to transport oxygen through the bloodstream, they use a different protein called hemocyanin, which contains copper. They also have three hearts Doug Anderson - Red Cuttlefish #underwaterlife #saveourmarinelife #bestfish
