12.05.2022 Influenza Season is upon us, and nobody knows that better than our fearless founder Greg Barry!! Greg spent a very rough last week after contracting Influenza A and pneumonia, having to spend some time in hospital. The reason we are sharing this is because the fact that Covid has been so front of mind for us all, you, like many of us, may have forgotten to get a flu shot, which in Greg's case, was an extremely dangerous oversight! An estimated 1 in 5 Australians are infect...ed by the flu each year. Getting an annual influenza vaccination is one of the key ways to prevent the flu. And although it’s common, the flu is not the same as the common cold. Influenza is a severe illness and can lead to pneumonia, inflammation of the heart, and bronchitis. 19.01.2022 Latest Brisbane City Council Budget Includes a 33% Infrastructure Rebate for SDA Housing Brisbane City Council will introduce a 33% infrastructure rebate for certified developers who build properties to a ‘universal housing’ gold standard. The scheme aims to encourage developers and builders to design and construct purpose built homes for people living with a disability and will assist those seeking funding under the Specialist Disability Accommodation through the NDIS. An in...itial investment of $2 million has been set aside in 2019-20, with the rebate expected to be between $3,000-$5,000 per dwelling after properties are inspected and verified. 15.01.2022 More Australians will be able to access affordable housing following a $2 billion commitment from NAB which will see more homes being built across the nation! Disability accommodation organisations, such as NAB-financed SDA Alliance, will benefit from this announcement and have welcomed it as a substantial investment.

09.01.2022 Earlier this year Federal the government announced immediate reforms to SDA to improve participants’ choice and control as a result of KPMG’s then recent report. Prior to these reforms, The SDA Framework and Rules did not fully consider the preferences being expressed by participants in relation to their living arrangements. This has led to an outcome that has been adopted by the NDIS which we are particularly pleased about, eligible participants are now able to express their... preferences and have choice about who they can live with. Participants now can also seek SDA approvals without necessarily identifying a suitable dwelling. This means that participants may go into the market and seek out and negotiate for occupations of suitable dwellings with the far stronger benefit of having their approval already confirmed. Providers also benefit form a new initiative which allows dwellings to be pre-registered (e.g. prior to construction). This is a significant risk mitigant for projects. 09.01.2022 Yesterday our team had the pleasure in attending the Housing Connection Showcase and Workshop designed to create lasting networks between Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) providers and NDIS participants. Our Principal Consultant and Founder Greg Barry was among a panel of industry professionals and lived experience participants providing SDA insights and fielding an array of SDA questions. It was great to be a part of the conversation and we thoroughly enjoyed the day. 04.01.2022 Hi Colleagues, We are providing Specialist Support Coordination to a young adult on the Sunshine Coast who is looking for a suitable person to co-reside with, in the Buderim / Maroochydore / Kawana area (other locations also considered). She has been living on her own with formal supports for approx. 6 months and would like to try co-residing with someone with similar interests and goals. A little about the Participant: Interests include learning in general but has a strong... interest in animals, history, science, and philosophy. She is currently exploring lifestyle choices including minimalism and has a desire to travel in the future. Striving to develop independent living skills. Personal values are supportive of diversity in the community. Age 19. Primary diagnosis is Autism L3. The Participant has a wonderful support worker team in place, and we do not wish to disrupt this (including for the matched Participant if their supports are their preference). Overtime however, there may be an opportunity to explore shared supports in some capacity. We’re aware that the right match exists, and they too may be looking for a co-tenant. Importantly, we are looking for characteristics that include positivity, motivation, confidence and stability.
